Oh I know why she was crying at the end because she told arthur she was having an affair with lancelot. Though she's married to Arthur. Stupid Guinevere brought all of Camelot down because of an affair.
I just realized that King Arthur is Dumbledore! I can't believe it's taking me this long to realize that movie King Arthur/Richard Harris played Dumbledore! Ha!
brilliant acting, i was crying thru out cos of the tension so brilliantly portrayed and the end when she cries...cant get past the not begin in love thing...oh god awful
I remember listening to this on my mum's LP record, back in the day before CD and MP3's. I use to love this who album, and it just brings back a lot of happy memories.
THANK YOU for this !! It has been my ALL-TIME favorite musical since I was 13 (I'm now 52 and it still is my FAVOITE). Lots of life lessons in this---it's almost spiritual to me. Thank you ever so much!!!!
She doesn't really want him to answer. She won't accept anything he says. A classic case of a man trying to solve a problem, and a woman happy enough to wallow in it.
I saw Camelot several times during it's original theatrical release in 1967, I was 15 years old. I still love every scene, every song, and every line of dialogue.
I don't think these songs will ever cease to make me cry...as I just cried off all my makeup, just like I did back in the day.
It's really hard to imagine that it was Richard Harris who later played Dumbledore in the first two parts of Harry Potter :-) (which he did wonderfully!)
First rate video and audio; so profoundly sad; this is where the movie truly branches completely from the stage version and does what only film can do. Thanks!
Dang, I haven't seen this since I was a kid. These two really can't sing worth a damn. What a shame they couldn't get Burton and Andrews - this couple just can't pull it off. Harris just doesn't have the gravitas to play King Aurthur.
They appear to have a conversation beginning at 5:50. I wonder if the screenplay had Jenny confessiong, and Arthur finally hearing the news he had been dreading and denying. It might have been edited out and overwritten by the music.
Haven't seen this since I was a child, but watching it now I was blown away. The emotional power and complexity of the scene that plays out: Two people with immense respect and affection for each other who can no longer deny that their marriage is falling apart. Because they have history and friendship and routine together they can sometimes come close to forgetting that fact, but can never quite do it. Those last, frenetic moments when she wants to kiss him but can't--it's heartbreaking.
Richard Burton looks like a combination of that man who was really the Devil who was locked up in a closet on "Twilight Zone" and a slightly mad relative of Spock, the Vulcan. Who did his make-up? It's ghastly!
why all of the sudden they became sad? i don't get it! dizzy and motion sickness from all the spinning i guess. well at least they didn't throw up on each other!
@ConfusedSponge Well, think of all that has gone before-- Arthur and Guinevere's radiant and hopeful beginnings (for themselves and their kingdom) and then her betrayal of all that with Lancelot. They try so hard in this song to turn back the clock but they simply can't, it's futile.
Probably my favorite scene in the movie, by why for the love of God can anyone tell me why Richard Harris was forced to wear blue eye-shadow throughout the movie?
she has a wonderful voice. I prefer the version of Camelot with Julie Andrews just because the songs are more musical-- they sing the entire time instead of talking-- but that's only because I like to attempt to sing along with them... this version fits more to the movie scene.
flicker2754-perfect take on this delightful song. I wore out the CD before I saw it on the stage-I'd thought this a happy little song until that evening...I liked Harris' performance both on stage and in this movie. .
The emotional tension of this scene far surpasses any stage version. Despite its lyrical nature, the song's placement in the drama emphasizes the insurmountable barrier to happiness in their marriage following her infidelity with Lancelot. The tearfully tragic ending completely conveys this without any words at all. Terrific performances by Vanessa and Richard!
I don't think u can compare this to the Burton/J.Andrews performance--the 2 are just played completely differently. Personally I like the spirit in the latter--actually it was their performance of this song on the Ed Sullivan show that saved Camelot from an early end on Broadway, creating a renewed interest in the show and finally making it a hit after months of mixed reviews/declining attendance...who knows if it would have survived or there even been a movie otherwise?
That's a remarkable thought, that the movie might never have been made, because I think it's accurate to say that Jim Webb would not then have met Richard Harris on the film set, and they would not have recorded MacArthur Park and the great albums that followed. It seems we may owe a great deal to Burton and Andrews.
...perhaps in more ways than one w/re. to Julie Andrews-- she and Harris apparently developed a particularly volatile relationship working together on "Hawaii" and Harris is quoted as saying that he would not have done the film version of Camelot had Andrews agreed to reprise her role...but, of course, she turned it down.
There is no comparison between the 2 versions of this film. Richard Harris & Vanessa Redgrave pull off the passion and emotional connection MUCH more than Julie Andrews and Richard Burton.
Julie Andrews voice is beautiful, but the realness of Vanessa Redgrave is so much more there. You can't help but laugh and cry through this movie... LOVE IT!
I love Julie Andrews, and let's be honest she was certainly more regal in the role...but I think that I perfer Vannessa's singing. But then again, broadway and movies can't be accurately compared. =P I simply enjoy the slower speed. ^^
I love the underlying sadness in this scene. Thank you for posting. Camelot is one of my favorites and I havent been reminded of it in a while. Brings back memories! =)
It's STILL wonderful..!
