  • 0.19 There are no words.

  • Love David's perfect German.

  • @PT8475 His pronounciation is pretty good, isn't it?

  • @Schensue Yes, and saying it all so quickly must have been very difficult (I say this as a non-native German speaker myself).

  • Ëvën thë nümbërs hävë ümläüts, löl!

  • WTF!?

  • Have I translated the 'good luck' segment correctly?

"But before we start I must tell you both 'good luck'

    'Oh thanks very much'

"I knew it! Take her away!"

  • Meanwhile in Germany...

  • True artistry.

Love the prizes at the end - a signed photo of David Hasselhof for Simon, und for Julie, a bag over the head with 'NEIN' written on it. That nearly made me choke with laughter. Top drawer stuff. :)

  • -Julie, wie gehts?

    -Nein

    -und simon?

    -ja!

    Hahahahaha^^

  • Umlauts on the numbers, hilarious.

  • This is one of the best German pronounciations I've heard, I understand every word. The Monty Python episode in German for example is very hard to listen to, but I did'nt expect anything else from Mr. Mitchell, he's genius!

  • oh man! finally studying german for 3 years paid off!

  • David's even hotter when he's speaking German.

  • Only in Eastern Europe...

  • Comment removed

  • Thumbs up if you could understand what they were saying

  • oh. my. if you're german... it's just embarrassing. i think i'll go now and cry a little bit...

  • @FreiesRadikales I've always thought it must be embarrassing.

  • Lustig^^

  • WTF ?! :D

  • Are they speaking gibberish, or is it legitimate german?

  • @mshaddock Mostly legitimate. Some of the phrases are a bit off, and there's a heavy accent, but it's definitely not gibberish.

  • @mshaddock

My German's not bad and I understand about 95% of it, so it's IMO, fairly proper German, although it is silly, just like the English version.

  • I've been looking for freedom xD

  • didnt kniw what he said 1:26

  • @dim432

he say's "ach das habe ich gewusst" ->"ah i did know that"

but i have to say i am german and i hardly could understand it...

  • @AssiGammelKeks

I think it's slightly Denglischised German but it sounds like proper German to me but I'm English und kann nur ein bissen Deutsch sprechen aber habe ich in Graz fuer ein Jahre gewohnt.

  • @dim432 I had my german friend translate this for me and it goes "Ah I knew that, Take her way, Julie you are wangernumb and then basically Simon is the winner. So what happened was, the presenter said to her "Good luck" and cos she replies in English, she is exposed as a traitor to germany (must be some WW2 reference) xD

  • @2Koranteng it's from the Great Escape. Some escaped PoW's are boarding a bus and a gestapo officer says "good luck" in english and one man responded with "thankyou" in english, blowing everybody's cover.

  • @MinorHeadstorm yeh so its slightly similar then cos the gestapo are german secret police lol

  • oooooh wie süß sich das anhört...;P

  • the hasselhoff picture XD

  • his german is really good... i am impressed

  • Brilliant. I have a math LD called dyscalculia, and math class made about this much sense to me!

  • I've seen real german television that looks like this!

  • You mean all german gameshows and comedy shows and realitytv?

  • @VDGG94ki It doensn't ! :D

  • @VDGG94ki It doesn't ! :D

  • haha the bag with neine onit is classic

  • I like the little nod to the Great Escape!

I'm not sure who is better at "daft gameshow host" Robert webb, who is good because he makes little or no sense! or David Mitchell with his dodgy german accent!

  • ah danke danke!

  • in general he's saying sentences that make sense, in the usual Nümberwang style you know ;) so they make sense, but they don't. I'm impressed how good his German is!

"Julie, how are you?" - "No" - "Simon?" - "Yes!"

  • is he speaking real german the whole time or is it just bits and pieces?

  • It is real german, with a british accent.

  • It is very badly translated and poorly pronounced German, but any decent German speaker can understand what they're saying. It's only funny if you've seen the original Numberwang episodes.

  • Do i detect a 'Great Escape' parody here?

    Mitchell: Good Luck

    Julie: Oh, thanks very much

    Gestapo Officer: Good Luck

    Prisoner : Thanks very much.

  • why yes..you do.

  • well duh...

  • @JPanzerj Duh?

  • Lol there's something about mitchell and webb that really puts them above other comedy duos, german gameshows being one of those factors :P

  • bayerische lederhosen?

    lol

  • DAS IST NUMBERWANG!!!!!

  • I wonder what Germans make of this!

  • Everything is funnier in German!

  • Yeah

  • You should watch Monsters Inc. in German- it's hilarious!

  • das war zu komisch lässt Spiel nümberwang!

  • 'good luck' thankyou very much!

    LOL!!

    his german is good!

  • I saw this on BBC America and found it hysterically funny, but it went by so fast. Glad it is online, plus there are other Numberwangs that I've never seen. I can't stop watching this one because it is the funniest of them all. I crack up every time. It's crazy German mixed with English. The umlauts over the numbers is a brilliant comic touch as is the "way" Mitchell says things more than "what" he says. Roteire das bret! Too funny. A brilliant take on game shows from comic geniuses.

  • Waterhead

  • Roteire das bret!

  • Ich liebe Nümberwang!

  • Haha... they gave him a signed picture of David Hasselhoff.. and put a bag with 'nein' on her head... lol random

  • Hehe, it sound more like Duch than like German (if you hear the pronounciation^^)

  • Cool, can you give us a few translations?

  • WTF?

Its so silly... i dont even understand it though i'm german and know what that silly guy is saying...

  • its not ment to make sense thats the joke :P lol its imense

  • Wie kommst du denn darauf?

  • numberwang never makes any sense

  • sehr komisch ^_^

  • Great refrence to Great Escape.

Good Luck, Thanks, thats how they get Bartlett and Mac

  • oh thanx very much . aaaaaaaaaaaaacccccccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Poor Julie never wins...

  • i kno!!

i realised that the other day when i was on a random spree of watching all numberwangs again for no reason!

  • she does win wen they hav 2 inhale th gas and die

  • Yes that's right I remembered as soon as I posted the comment...

  • lol tht happens 2 me 2

  • lol

  • great escape lol

  • Echt geil!

  • It's meant to be nonsense - oder sinnlos (blodsinn?)

Lots of silly jokes the main joke is about crap gameshows that end up spreading to lots of other countries...

"Good luck" that's from the Great Escape.

  • genius great escape reference! And marathon man.

  • oh thank you very much LOL !!!

  • i luv clichês :D

  • stupid tommys :)

    :D

  • wtf? what is the meaning of that show? Oo

lotta crap they talk .. but sumkinda funny ;)

  • was ist das für eine scheiße...

  • Für so eine Verarsche sprechen die eigentlich schon ein sehr gutes Deutsch auch wenn es letztendlich trotzdem totaler Blödsinn ist. ^^

  • ummm.....what

  • he says that as it is a micktake the german isnt actually too bad but it is still nonsnce

  • i luv numberwang

  • A bit of a poor attempt at the translation. At the end he says back tomorrow not in the morning (morgen means both).

  • brilliant accent

  • yeah i know.. but in the show he says Julie is A hamburger and simons a Frankfurt..

  • its supposed to be as random as possible

    its great haha

  • But in German, if you say someone is 'A Frankfurter/A Hamburger/A whatever, Dresdener, for example, it means that they are a citizen of that town. Like the Berliner thing with Kennedy.

  • but you cant say 'EIN Hamburger / EIN Frankfurter' in German, that means they actually are Hamburgers/Frankfurters/Donuts, whatever. Take Kennedy. He said "Ich bin EIN Berliner'. That means I am a donut. He should have said 'Ich bin Berliner.' Thats part of why this episode is so funny. Not only is the grammar terrible, but there's a double pun on the Hamburger/Frankfurter joke.

  • No, "Ich bin ein Berliner." is 100% correct.

  • @tubiflex

I believe so too. I think it's a myth that he said "I am a doughnut" or, at least, it COULD mean both but in the context, it was clear what he menat and that he was not, indeed, a jam-filled fried dough oblate.

  • That's a common mistake by people who just read rumors on the internet but not really know German ;-)

The phrase "Ich bin ein Berliner" is ambiguous. It can mean:

    o I'm a Berliner

o I'm a pasty made of donut dough with jam inside

o I'm a pancake (only in the Berlin dialect)

The same applies to Hamburgers and Frankfurters.

The only mistake in that episode is that Julie is a woman, so the correct phrase would be: "Sie ist eine Hamburgerin.".

Best wishes from Hamburg! (Ich bin ein Hamburger)

  • Exactly thats what im getting at, not a big thing but they played on it. :)

  • Ich bin ein Hamburger/Berliner/Frankfurter doesnt mean "I'm [something to eat]"!

Your post is just wrong, I'm german, I have to know it...

  • I thought "Ich bin" meant I am

and "Ich esse" is I eat

  • correct.

  • a hamburg and a frankfurter? they're places... That's where the contestants are from.

  • he cant see what your saying dumbass..

  • Sort your english out.

  • I have translated it(may contain mistakes

Host: Good evening and welcome to Numberwang. With me today is Julie from Hamburg and Simon who is from Frankfurt. Julie how are you?

    Julie: No

    Host: Simon?

    Simon: Yes

Host: And first round one, lets play Numberwang!

  • Host: Simon goes first

    Simon: Two

    Host: Thats Numberwang!

    Julie: Eight

    Host: Thats Numberwang!

    Simon: Twenty Three

Host: Thats Numberwang! Round two, Numbertrousers, come here Simon and Julie.

  • Host: Ah very good, Julie has twelve, nintey and eight, and Simon has two million three hundered and eighty nine thousand four hundered and eleven, ah thank you, thank you.

Host: After this last round Julie seventeen and Simon has (not sure). So lets play Wangernumb, rotate the board.

Dentist: Iz Eet Safe? Iz Eet Safe?

Host: Julie, Simon get ready to play Wangernumb, before we begin I would like to wish you good luck.

  • Julie: (in english) Oh, thanks very much.

Host: Aaargh!!! (someting, something, something) Julie is not wangernumb, and Simon is todays Wangernumb!

Host: So, that is all for Numberwang today, back in the morning, till then, stay Numberwang!

    Simon: Stay Numberwang!
