Jeff, I was just surfing YouTube when I came across this video.
While it illegal in the D.C.-Metro region to ride on any of the Interstate roads(I-66, 270, 295, 370, 395, 495, 595, 695, etc.), I will ride on the state county n' city roads. When I do, I 'take the lane'. Because in 2007, I was riding the curb when a driver ran me off the road. I had numerous witnesses since it was at the main intersection in a small town. The driver had stupidity of lying to the police about not seeing me.
if you dont like people yelling at you on the road, maybe you should get off the fucking road?
Its obviously ridiculously dangerous to ride a bike on the highway. Not just for bikers but for drivers too. Ive been in situations where ive had to cross a double yellow, and last week a biker was killed less than 5 minutes from my house.
Really? Does that make sense to you? Driving potentially inconveniences or kills people so we should all get off the road? With that logic why stop with bicycles? People die in plane crashes -- what were they thinking when they bought plane tickets?
The more rational conclusion would be to work towards safer conditions for everyone. You don't have to ground air traffic. Maybe petition for bike lanes and drive safe -- territorial pissings are unnecessary. Be safe.
@6stringedkiller And I'm sure the stats back this up right? Or do you "just know"?
I ride my bike on the roads every day to work. Never had a problem, and 90% of the drivers don't either. So I guess you must be missing something, or must just be a prick. :)
This has to be a joke right? I thought they were called "mountain bikes'? Quit whining, you all sound like a bunch of women. Besides you don't think motorists have to deal with crazy drivers? We have to use the roads, you CHOOSE to use the roads.
@warbelly - a) mountain bikes are heavy and slow. b) there isn't always a choice other than the road. I don't know the laws in other states or cities, but in Houston you can be ticketed for riding on the sidewalk because it is MORE dangerous than the street - i.e. people pulling out of parking garages and can't see you zoom up on your bike fast enough to stop. Oh and btw, I am a woman, and I'm not whining, I'm fighting for my rights.
I've been cycling for a year and a half and thus far have only had a few bad experiences. Once involved getting hit by a car. it was sort of my fault, i was riding fast on the sidewalk to avoid cars and then i get to an intersection where a car rolls a stop sign. it was my fault, either way the guy drove away and i was sort of okay. i've changed since. taking up the lane is the safest thing to do.
P.s Im paranoid that while cars are passing me someone in a parked car will open a door
I ride a bike and give as much room to cars as possible, but to those who say use less congested roads, I want to get to places in a minimal amount of time just like you in your car. We're both vehicles. Just because I may be wearing lycra shorts (they're comfortable for longer distances, I don't care what you think I look like) doesn't mean I'm on a joy ride. People use bikes to get places.
Way to go Jeff..I hope that some of these idiots get a brain and realise that they don't own the road..keep up the great work and do another video. Maybe holysweater will have someone in his family hurt by these idiots and his attitude will change. You have our support..Cheers

Cyclist sometimes are sort of self indulgent. I've seen some riding on a local highway with 10-15 cars backed up, and there is a shoulder they could move to, which would make legal overtaking far easier.
He needs to take the lane, and all these close passes will go away. He is riding too far to the right which tells riders he wants to share the narrow lanes with cars.
This cyclist is working hard and hauling fast. Give him a break. He can't safely ride in the shoulder with all the glass and holes and stuff coming at him so fast. Just slow down and/or pass safely. I try to be a little nicer but I'm usually not moving anywhere near as fast. When I'm running fast downhill or on a tailwind, I'll move farther out in the lane too.
If you're cycling in America, there's no avoiding unfriendly roads. If you actually want to get to where you're going.
In good weather on good pavement after the winter debris clears, the ~1'-3' strip to the right of the line (typical of Wis roads built in last few decades) can be OK, I find. Over-aged pavement, not so good.
Many places this is not available. Cyclists can lawfully 'take the lane' to be safer & signal to drivers there is not enough room for both bike & car in the lane.
Great story. There are too many ignorant and impatient people on the road. Bicyclists have the same rights to the roads as motorists do, but unfortunately that important message has been lost in drivers ed classes. I can understand how motorists may be frustrated when a bicyclist is on a narrow road, but it's the responsibility of motorists to make sure they pass safely, and slow down if necessary to wait until it is safe. Many times the bicyclist really has no other option.

Frings is a self-righteous moron.
In some shots, he is on a two-lane road & the cars that pass him have him on the right, oncoming traffic on the left! WTF are they supposed to do?! And, this asshole is riding ON THE WHITE LINE, SHOVING HIS PETTY CAUSE INTO THE DRIVERS' FACES.
He should get smashed & deaded, so he stops presenting a hazard to drivers on the road. That bullshit about riding in the fucking SNOW?! GOD I wish that schmuck would've wiped out when the snow from the plow hit him!
The reason he is riding on the line is because debris and glass is swept off to the side of the street. Its best to ride where there isnt all the glass to avoid flats. If the car cannot go around, they must wait until its safe to pass. Thats not an opinion, thats the law.
Off the top of my head... they could, oh I don't know... slow down and wait for oncoming traffic to pass? Exactly like you would do if you were passing a slow car.

I have had a few close calls myself and some where cars being jerks and some are caused by being no shoulder and cars going both directions. I only ride on roads now with large shoulders.
There is not a single road with a shoulder within 3 miles of where I live - as a result, I ride exclusively on 2-lane rural roads with no shoulder. To answer your question, I would expect the car to slow down and pass when it's clear. If you pay attention, you'll notice that if the SUV had waited an extra fraction of a second, he would've had a completely empty oncoming lane to pass in.
Precisely. What would a car do if it was another car in front, driving very, very slowly? Hit him? No probably not. Why? Because that puts driver 1's life at risk too.
