The problem with Penang back then was that there were no tsunami emergency alerts installed for the public's awareness.. That is why the people in this video were laughing and joking because they did not realize that it was an actual tsunami until the very last second... So stop calling them names for laughing and stuff..
@rofbum916 The tsunami here in Penang (Malaysia) was much weaker than in Thailand, Indonesia & Sri Lanka. Even on Phi Phi Island most palm trees survived. So the tree in this clip would not have collapsed.
I hope anyone mocking them for laughing initially realises that everyone in this video is, without any doubt, dead, and this footage would have been found on an SD card in a recovered video camera.
@asspunchquarterpound Well its because in our country the wave is very small.. soo small its only a feet. Nobody expected this. I feel sorry for Acheh, Indonesia where the biggest Wave hits. 300 000 died.
At this moment people didn't know much about tsunami and how deadly it can be. Malaysia is not prone to such natural disaster except landslides, rockslides, mudslides, etc. Malaysians aren't aware of tsunami. I too would have stayed and watch. Malaysia is not in the Ring Of Fire. We don't get earthquakes, tornado, hurricane and definitely not a tsunami. Penang and Kedah was hit same time as Thailand (Phuket)
Yeah, people underestimate the power of "little" waves for sure, but 5 cm of water moving fairly fast can knock you down, and the worst part of it would be getting ripped back out with the wave
If you are a truth seeker, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click on the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Everyone needs to see this. The Present will turn this world right-side up if it reaches enough people.
@chillpill1122 ouh it was Malaysia.this video was beside the Gurney Drive....in Indonesia was in Acheh (the main techtonic plat which was the exactly the main point of 2004's tsunami) but some other countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Seychelles, Maldives and Malaysia had also felt the impact of it...
Tsunami doesn't mean 'big wave'. It means 'harbor wave', because the confines of a harbor often focuses & amplifies the height. A tsunami may come ashore being only 1 inch high. It is the wavelength that causes it to be a tsunami..
Wind wave wavelength may be 100 feet.
Tsunami wavelength may be 100 MILES.
That means the wave comes & goes for 30 MINUTES each way! = ENERGY!
What the heck? People, they didn't know the wave was going to hit hard until it came AT them with speed and height. Stop accusing them of being stupid.
just imagine you where there thinking it was a regular day and see a big wave get near you. Of course thinking its a regular day your going to laugh until you see that the waves dont stop thats when everyone realizes this is no joke and starts to panic.
@bigman25plus25 If a wave has enough force, it becomes big as it sweeps through more water and takes it with it, before curling up when the water shallows out and crashing down on the shore.
Penang was quite lucky, because it's located in the straight of Malacca, the waves had to go all the way around of Sumatra's northern tip. Is it Batu Ferringhi, that beach? I've been there. The wave's strength must have been estimated correctly by the spectators, because it could have easily swept them away if the water had pushed a little more forward, it was just week enough to be just bathing fun. The guts to wait for the wave shows the lack of tsunami-experience back then.
ohhhh shit.. imagine how terrified those people on the beach were.. they laughed as the first wave came.. thinking it would go back down.. and it did a little bit.. but that probably kept them from running (we all know how hard it can be moving forward in knee deep water going backwards) then another wave came and smashed them against the seawall... that is so scary :u awful way to go
From what i despict here seems to be pretty obvious... these poor people simply weren't aware of what was unfolding before them and lightly took this as a strong tide simply because they were not familiar of what a tsunami was and had no knowledge or warning of it. However... If I understood this right... The American Tsunami warning center did send off an alert to authorities of these countries but they failed to respond, therefore failing many of thier people miserably.
Unless you are directly near high ground that is over 10 feet. There is really no point in running, in the open ocean Tsunamis can reach speeds of 500mph, once they hit shallower water running up to land, they will slow down. Still, unless you can run 30mph, you are dead.
N'importe quelle personne dotée d'une conscience devrait se rendre compte, quand elle voit une vague comme ça et qui traverse toute la plage, qu'il se passe quelque chose, non ?? Et ce même s'il ne savent pas ce qu'est un tsunami
the water looked pretty harmless until a few seconds before it hit land. im sure people now would react different, after tsunamis have got so much attention in the medias
@djoleserbian yeah i was surprised the idiots kept laughing even after 2 people got slammed into the concrete wall by the big wave... how is that funny?? they probablly got their heads split open
@djoleserbian the person who was closest to the beach probably fared worse.. you seem them fall after the first wave.. when it pulls back it surely sucked that person under with it, then the second wave came and sealed their fate :u at least those upper people got killed instantly (most likely) .. scary shit
@skaterkiviman Of course. There is no escaping that much water unless you are up high, or far away. He was right on the beach, it would have knocked him over and he would have be pushed into something very hard, or quickly drown.
omg.. this is just soooo embarrassing.. they keep on saying "wow, that wave is so big. oh my god. look at it. wow.. its amazing.." then when the wave came in. they were like "*laugh for a while* then *screams* " ... don't they think is a bit weird that the wave suddenly become sooo big?? =.=
there laughing cause they thought i was a normal tidal wave.. tsunami looks like a tidal wave when coming in but a tsunami is a billons of gallons of water being pushed by movement (earthquake subduction) and it goes beyond the tide limit.. like inland sectons
It's harder to observe tsunamis like these near the sea level since they can look exactly like normal waves from that distance. However, when seeing tsunami from several meters above the sea, you'll notice that the wavelength of a tsunami is much longer (often several kilometers and only in a few cases, the waves break) and therefore, when it reaches land, it resembles onrushing tide rather than a larger wave.
They were laughing because they did not expect it was a tsunami. They were talking about how the waves looked huge and were amazed by it, thus they thought that was just normal waves coming in. Until the water reached the few people standing infront and near they then they realised it was time to get of it there,
@sherlychanny102 They didn't get the memo lol...but seriously. Those people only knew the waves were unusually big they didn't know a tsunami was coming..
@sherlychanny102 normally big wave, i mean the dangerous one in malaysia must caused by storm , when tsunami stirkes for the first time and unfortunately malaysian never heard of tsunami before 2004. they have no idea what was happening.
People are laughing in this video because Malaysia is located in a region where tidal waves never happen and the normal waves are significantly small to the normal waves of other countries. As a fellow Malaysian, we all didn't had a warning of this thing happening so we assumed its one of nature's wonders here in Malaysia. We all knew what happened the very next day
@BJash94 - Kind of should have figured what might happen when watching those waves come in. If waves there are significantly small in comparison, you'd THINK, that MAYBE, 20 giant waves moving at 100mph straight towards you could possibly cause some damage.
@miseryisgold13 Werent taking it seriously, didnt expect that much water to rush in. Simply, they were fucking idiots and many of them paid with their lives. Hard to feel all that bad for people died that did not try to get away at the first sign of trouble.
To all people wondering why people are "just standing there and not doing anything": Back in 2004, Tsunamis recieved virtually NO media coverage in the Western world, people had NO idea what it meant when the sea is suddenly receding - I remember being the only person in my family knowing those waves, because I was generally interested in natural desasters.
That way, Tilly Smith could save almost 100 tourists from certain death, only because she knew.
@AustrianChaos - Just think once in a while? Thinking might have come in handy for those people who were standing on the beach waiting to be pummled by millions of gallons of violent water. Maybe if they'd have though "Hey, waves usually don't get that big, move that fast, or come in on such frequent intervals"... MAYBE, they'd still be alive. Watching those sort of waves come in, I can't believe people would sit there and laugh, but I'm constantly amazed by the stupidity of others.
You think you're really smart, do you. Watched too many Bruckheimer movies, eh? The waves didn't look all that big or that fast, especially from afar - and when people realized that they actually WERE, it was usually much too late.
Proof? More than 230,000 deaths. It's always easy to be "smart" afterwards.
@AustrianChaos How many of those 230,000 people do you suppose were standing on the beach watching the waves come at them? Don't be pissed off becuase I'm making sense that you don't agree with. I'm talking about the people on the beach who saw it coming, not the people in their homes that had no warning... Try rethinking your argument here, and don't be so defensive. If you make sense and I'm wrong, I'll admit it. No need to lose your temper.
for fucks sake, on every tsunami video there is always some faggot with the highest rated comments, and its usually about japan, SERIOUSLY, ITS NOT FUNNY!
There is no doubt we are very close to judment day all humanity has to repent from our sins and ask GOD for forgivenes in the name of Jesus Christ hes only son and we will be saved

how stupid can people be? if you see a wall of water racing towards you, it's probably not a good thing.

@miseryisgold13 The gene pool is better off without these ones
standauffish 10 months ago

So please, just think once in a while.

@ViperXXXXXXX

@AustrianChaos Still, when the ocean recedes 75 feet with no warning it's a good sign to maybe find higher ground.

Tsunamis don't seem that dangerous when you SEE them... it's only when the water hits you realize how serious it is.
