Yeow! The yak lost his yahoo and went yowzah and didn't even turn yellow. It seems like yesterday when I saw this. It reminded me of my youth though mind ye, I'm not that old, aye! Yeah, yeah, yeah!
"Sesame Street" dates all the way back to 1969, and Jim Henson created Kermit the Frog (who was on "Sesame Street" before he was on "The Muppet Show") a long time before that. I have fond memories of watching "Sesame Street" in the 1970s.
I recall that when this segment was rerun around the late 1990s, they modified the ending so when the yak charged toward the screen, instead of it ending on a black screen, the glass would shatter away to reveal the beginning of the next segment!
I remember when I saw this when I was little, after the crash effect, it had the Sesame Street News logo zoom up to the screen very fast afterward! (I believe it was the News Flash segment about the London Fog.) A double-zoom attack!
I so love these retro Sesame shorts lady bug picnic the alligator kin one and this one they make me feel happy and it makes me think when i was a child LOL I love them lol...
Oy! I never thought I'd see this sketch again. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for yaks, and I know it's from watching sketches like this one and the yak songs on animal alphabets.
Yes, that would look amazing if this cartoon was made in 3-D. It would look real that the yak was just about to hit you with it's horns.
It's funny, when I saw this skit when I was very young, and when I saw the yak running and crashing into the screen, I thought he broke my TV, and I would always cry saying "he broke my TV", haha.
I like this skit a lot. A cool character, that yak; particularly when he charges. His voice is great. It also teaches people that it's not nice to call others names.
So do I. As ol' Mr. Yak was stampeding, I can still picture it now: the narrator suddenly pleading, "Oh, no, no, no, please, no, no- I didn't mean you any harm, honest I didn't! It was only a jo--AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!" as he gets impaled in the yak's left horn and gets cut by the glass from the camera...
Can someone tell if Sesame Street was also playing a "Yakety Yak" video with Bugs Bunny and some recording artist back in the 90's? I was curious about the video, but can't find it on You Tube!
You're thinking of the public service ad for recycling which came out in 1991. It was shown occasionally on "Sesame Street", but was mainly seen between other shows and had no Muppets. Known as "Yakety Yak - Take It Back", it starred a slew of celebs, including Bugs Bunny, Pat Benatar, Quincy Jones, Queen Latifah, even Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the song's original writers. Alas, I can't find it on YouTube anywhere.
I'd say that if any kind of animated character charged directly at the camera, there's a good chance that the child watching would get freaked out and hide out of fear of getting trampled.
I was too. With the yak responding to that, I thought he would also say to the announcer "you hurt my feelings!" where the announcer said to him "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I was just trying to have some fun talking to you saying a joke since you're a smart yak." Then at the end of the skit, I thought it would've been nice if either the yak or the announcer said to the audience "boys and girls, never talk back to someone who talks a lot or their feelings will be hurt."
great clip but it was out of sync! and the narration sounded kinda like Dave Seville form Alvin and the chipmunks. (TV cartoon debuing sometime in the late 70's)
I made a parody of that clip where when the yak charges toward the screen, the Viacom "V of Doom" theme plays. I didn't want to upload it to Youtube so I wouldn't anger Viacom, but SOMEONE snatched it from me and did the same!
LOL! I'm glad I'm not the only kid who was afraid of this! I used to hide behind the recliner as soon as this cartoon would start, peeking out and then ducking as soon as the yak charged!
I was thinking of this skit for a while in the last two years. At last I found it and I love the letter "Y" for that reason. I like the third word that comes up in this exerpt. Say yes to your life!
LOL! Funny, I just remembered the last part of this skit where the yak goes berzerk,... he used to scare the crap out of me as a kid. I remember closing my eyes at that last part. Ahh, crazy childhood memories.
