This is so wonderful !!! Just to hear this sweet pure annointed voice and piano playing... Do you have Sweet Jesus by Doris Akers and the Statesmen Quartet?
llandry949@yahoo.com. let me know.. or post it here on Youtube. Great joy hearing her sing again...Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Oh my gosh, my grandma is in this choir, Darlene Sutton (Osborne). This is so awesome! She loved singing in this choir, and absolutely loved Doris and all she did for my grandma! These are some of her fondest memories. I can't wait to share this with her! Thank you :) Monica
Don't anybody forget Jesus has gifts of anointing like this ready to pass out to those TODAY who will DEVOTE THEIR LIFE TO HIM. Doris had more Holy Ghost in her pinky finger than most modern "evangelists" have in their whole body. SEEK the Lord while He may be found! ASK Him for an anointing to minister Jesus and His Holy Ghost to His church and to the lost. I've never seen that prayer go unanswered
I remember so well the first time I met Doris. I was invited to sing at Rev. Jodie Struather's church in Oakland -He didn't tell me that Doris Akers was the main minister of that night. He knew she was one of my favorites. On arrival he brought me into a little room and sitting waiting for service to start was Doris. When we looked at each other..we both laughed. As she told my mother later that evening. "He looks more like he's my son then yours" . it was love at first sight
Doris Akers was one of a kind. Her sound was completely different then any other gospel artist of her time . She sang from her relationship with the Lord..always fresh and pure in presentation..no matter how many times she had sung a song..it was delivered with a awesome anointing. She knew who she was in the Kingdom and it didn't matter whether others understood the magnitude of her gift or not. She knew the the Master had commissioned her to go forth..Min. Gene Viale
@meforgospel: To Min. Gene Viale--you nailed when you emphasized that it was the Lord's annointing, fresh daily because Doris was "prayed up" every time she ministered in music~! The rest of your comment was absolutely on point "...she knew who she was in the Kingdom and it didn't matter whether others understood the magnitude of her gift or not--she took her commission seriously.

It's almost impossible not to know where Doris was coming from. She lived for Christ every second of her life. She stayed strong with her unfailing faith. She was just an awesome inspiration.
love to wake up with gospel ringing through my heart...songs that I thought I'd kinda lost track of...BUT my heart knew where to find 'em! Hallelujah!!
I traveled with Nancy Harmon for six years and we used to go to a church in Ontario, CA I think where two of the Sutton sisters went to church. Darlene used to sing Never Turn Back. They were a great group! Incredible singers.
Darlene is still living. Her other sister passed away about ten years ago. She was a blast and so is Darlene. A lot of fun. Very youthful and dynamic.
Thank you so much I have their album they recorded while singing with the Sky Pilot Choir. Their father, Rev. Sutton was a very dynamic and powerful preacher. He could really pray. He ended his prayers with, "Well Amen, Well Amen, Well Amen."
I miss those days attending the Sky Pilot Revival Center, but these songs bring back so many plesant memories.
Dar used to sing "Never Turn Back" at Don Pisciotta's church in Ontario. She'd sing herself happy by the end of the song and would be shouting the house down. I have some pictures of Dar shouting all over the platform. Great memories.
Well I know you wrote this a year ago, but Darlene (Sutton) is my grandma. She's doing well. Fondly talks about Sky Pilot Choir and Doris, this was a great part of her life!
I knew Doris and her brother Harley years ago. We attended REVIVAL CENTER when she was director of this choir in the 1960's. I will NEVER forget those days and that choir.!!
oh my gosh we have a old record album call the sky pilot choir.FANTASTIC . we have this since my sibling s and i were young and we are grown and we are never tired of listening to it this is fantastic to hear. thank you

Do you know if any of the Sutton Sisters are still living? I last saw Shirley in the late 60's after Doris left. They were a great trio.
