I've loved Daniel's music for 20 years now and my only regret is I didn't know him before. I discovered him on the now defunct Brave New Waves radio show with Brent Bambry and then with Patti Schmidt. Good not so old times.
I watched the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and apart from it being frightening and heartbreaking, in it there's certain things he said that epitomise what this record means to me. "I'm ok coz I know where ever i go I have music in my heart." His childlike purity stills me. Such a stunning song. Andrea x
Andrea covers 'Some Things Last A Long Time' on her new album 'Lifelines' due out on 30 May 2011.
I loved this film. I had heard of Daniel Johnston before this film but since this it has changed my mind. I think for a guy with who had no guitar and piano lessons he does pretty good. He's like Dylan but more emotionally inspiring.
this movie was crazy such an interesting story, but the music and art he created speaks to me on an emotional level, I get a similar vibe from the band monster machismo, they might be influenced by him but if you like this you should check them out good stuff.
i wouldn't say he was a musical genius, like in my opinion elliott smith is way more talented...but he made some very great songs like "some things last a long time", which i think is absolutely beautiful...
I immediately related the two upon discovering Johnston. They both give off somewhat of an undeniable innocence in their lyrics and melodies. I think Smith might be what Johnston would be capable of if he were not so afflicted.
Daniel Johnston maybe a nutcase but the lyrics this man wrote are of the best I've heard. I like his art more then most crap you'll find here on Youtube.. and no I'm not a hippy.
Really? There was music? All I heard was some rambling, mumbling, train-of-thought garbage that some "cultural" elite decided was music...not because of any inherent value in the "art," but because of the image of the "artist."
That "cultural" elite has influenced the music we've heard since the 1990's. Inspiration, more importantly than coming from another source,is from the inspiration within yourself. Funny, this crazed, rambling "idiot" has accomplished much in his life despite his disability and is praised, what have you done you lousy piece of shit. Have some respect.
Well, at some point in my life, I learned how to form a coherent sentence--something you might do some research on before you make a fool of yourself.
Ancient argument: what is "good" art? The question is subjective. Making art requires surrender and/or courage of spirit. Few artists will leave an indelible mark on this world. Far more will move the hearts of a very few. Does the work provoke, entertain, or transform you? More important than "is this good" question is the chance to use a film like this as a mirror: what does it say about us as a world? As a country? As a community, a social circle, a family and as individuals?
There are many artists who create beautiful work and later are called "insane" Hell, Van Gogh cut off his eat! Daniel is an artist! How can you listen to "The Story of An Artist" and not call it art? Dan is a great piano player. Bad voice? No unusual. BUT sometimes-bizarre sounds and voices are often distinctive and captivating. Look at Dylan.
I love how people like to use excuses like, oh you just like it because its not mainstream to hide them from some really beautiful music. We are naturally afraid I guess, I know ive done it.
Grr... don't you understand, there are million artists that try to do something new (not mainstream). But Daniel Johnston had least has the talent. The fact that the quality is a bit low, are due to not having a million-dollar stereo equipment, cause that's what you want no? Dam fools never gonna learn, stay off Daniel.
haha, do you guys think this guys better than Dylan or Robert Johnson? Just cuz something isn't mainstream doesn't make it good. Oh it's underground which makes me hip for listening to it, fuck that.
Flounder, you fool. The guy had a talent, andyes, it's not the kind of music you would expect, but he is nevertheless an artist. I bought the album "Late Great Daniel Johnston", I listened to the Originals for 9 months before I took on the Covers. I like him, he's got quite some heartgrief. And I'm gonna eat out the brains of you kind of guys (no literally).
He's not an artist, he's mentally ill, he's completely fucking insane. You're praising the ramblings of a mental patient, talentless, rambling whinings that mean absolutely nothing. His songs and lyrics are badly written - and that's a fact. Just because it's uncoventional it doesn't make it genius. What he needs is a good doctor and a good hospital.
Not everyone is going to accept the unconventional. Hell, there are people out there that consider Tool, their apex of the strange. I wish people wouldnt slam the artist though. I could understand if someone just said, I dont like it or, I didnt like it. Then maybe a toughtful backing statement. Artist bashers are not critics.
He's not dead. The tribute album was called "Late Great Daniel Johnston", or something like that, but the front cover obviously showed himself visiting a mock grave.
Daniel Johnston sucks. He can't play guitar, his lyrics and singing are awful. I swear, any idiot can get on stage and start mumbling about whatever he's thinking about, and some people are just bound to fall to their knees and proclaim it 'art' of the highest caliber. When I saw the documentary, it made me feel a little sorry for Daniel, but honestly, I'd rather listen to Britney Spears than his horrible off-tune G-C-D progressions over and over for a THOUSAND IDENTICAL SONGS ABOUT NOTHING.
LordUrkel, get your head out of your ass and your brain out of the mainstream watered down unemotive shit. What the fuck do you listen to? Britney? Is your prime TV entertainment some lame ass talent show? At least this guy writes and sings from his soul, where the fuck is your soul at? 7-11 boy.
You are an idiot...his music is better than almost anything out there. His new stuff with the band isn't, but his solo stuff has been and always will be top notch. The fact that he has mental instability doesn't make it any better or worse. It just happens to be the focal point of the film. He's lead an interesting life too, worthy of a film. I hope yo can come around one day, try listening to either Songs of Pain or Yip/Jump Music, those are good.
i'd also like to see it, but i don't think our small town cinema would bring it in front of me...so even though i'm sure it's not the right thing to do i want to snatch it from the net.
