@Stevedup I remember one in which 'Captain Cleanup' and his kid sidekick tookout a bunch of trash mobsters who were planning to pollute 'Sparkle City' and it had this same ending promo
"MAKE ALL AMERICA SPARKLE CITY! PUT LITTER IN IT'S PLACE!"
The reason for the caps is that I always remember Captain Cleanup's booming voice of God more than anything.
Anybody know where I can see the old 60's anti-hate animated PSA cartoon where the guy is walking towards you looking angrier and angrier, until he blows up? I gotta find that one!
@pazzensutra I've been looking for that one for AGES...scared me to death as a kid. No one seems to have it. I can tell you it was made by the Jewish Chautauqua Society.
At long last - the full version is now available! Courtesy of Keep America Beautiful. Check the video responses to this post, or search for our user page: KABNETWORK
(continued from below): Captain Clean-up then says, "That's where you belong... in the WASTE CAN!" The Captain's side kick, a heroic boy, observes, "We sure put them in their place, Captain Clean-up, right?". The Captain replies, "Right!" Then the Captain admonishes the television audience kids to properly dispose of watses, adding at the end, in a slightly lower, sort of 'aside' voice, "Remember, you have to set an example for YOUR parents."
This commercial started off with a rat-type-looking guy, who spoke like Edward G. Robinson, tellingh his accomplices, "Okay, Big-Daddy Dirt Pile, throw candy and gum wrappers around the city... and you, Sammy the Slob, foul up the water and the air.. and you..." Suddenly Captain Clean-up appears and says, "Stop! You will not mess up this town." The bad guys reply, "It's Captain Clean-up... we're through!" A commotion ensues and the baddies wind up in th trash can. (continued)
This IS INDEED a classic.. But I remember the longer version with the villains getting it in the end and the hero saying "THAT'S where YOU belong... In the WASTE can-n-n!"
this isnt from 1974 because thats the year the ad council implemented the logo it uses to this day. Anyone remember the safety belts it's a nice way to say I love you psa? Be great to see that again.
This "Captain Cleanup" classic brings back great memories!!! The old rotary "Advertising Council" logo, the message about keeping America clean, and taking pride in the environment concepts rocked. If only they put this on TV Land, Boomerang, sold these old PSAs on DVD for homeuse only, that would be cool. Thanks for posting this!!!
TVLAND no longer airs retromercials. If you ask me the way that network has been going for the past five years in quality and airing past tv shows that are not classics as far as I'm concerned, TV LAND belongs in the waste basket.
Wow, I've been looking for this for years, but didn't think to search RetroJunk. Anyone know who this superhero is? If he was an actual comic book/Saturday morning animated character, or was he just created for the PSA? He looks like a cross between Captain America and the Spirit.
I remember this PSA well! I have been told there was a longer version of this ad. Can anybody confirm, or deny, this?

Note to Juscz:
Not forgetting the intro: Our two heroes are flying thru the skies.
Captain's Young Assistant - "All's quiet in Sparkle City, Captain Clean-Up!"
Captain - "Not quite, Kid Cool-It! [Captain utilizes his telescopic vision] Look there!"
Gawd, how do we all bloody *remember* all this stuff?

I also remember this ad. Notice how "Captain Clean-Up" is dressed like any ordinary American consumer with the exception
of the cape, boots, tights and Fruit-Of-The-Looms? Ha! Ha! These ads also in print forms.

Be awesome to see the whole psa with the pollution thugs plotting to pollute the city! "
Big Daddy Dirtpile, drop candy and gum wrappers..."

Thank you for keeping this alive. I remember a small coloring book at the time, it showcased his three villains.
Very hard to find info on any of this character. You'd think with the internet it would survive elsewhere, but it doesn't.
Even wikipedia has a bias because the demographics of the people creating and editin articles are "front-loaded" to the present day. And poorer day.

(for 'jlinsky') Captain America and The
Spirit? Good guess...but to me, he looks
more like a cross between Dick Tracy and
Superman!
