@professorfirefly Richard Hurndall. He is somewhat similar to Hartnell, but only when you compare him to a distant memory of him from old grainy black and white footage.
@NateSean Ten liked Five, even if Five initially didn't like ten. However, from a more serious perspective there is evidence to suggesat, that while he might be attached to certain incarnations more than others, the Doctor deep down, at least since his eleventh incarnation, doesn't like himself. eg he said to the dreamlord (himself) he is the only person who could hate him that much. when the TARDIS created a hoogram of himself he said give me someon i like
Umm, BBC dear... You credit William Hartnell, but he wasn't in The Five Doctors. They had Richard Hurndall PLAY William Hartnell playing the Doctor. You should really fix your description...
i'd just like to point out an error in the description. that's not actually william hartnell. he died shortly after his three year run as the doctor. it's supposed to be the doctor represented by the actor; however, that First doctor is actually played by richard hurndall, who plays the role similarly to hartnell, which is nice for people who've seen the 'original' first doctor.
this was the first time i saw five. XD and i love the three and two hating each other. love the classic series!
@StaraziaSelin66 It's possible the BBC's description is taking into account the intro with Hartnell doing his farewell speech to Susan from Dalek Invasion of Earth.
@electrictroy2010 William Hartnell had actually passed away in 1975; the actor playing the First Doctor is Richard Hurndall, who was (dubiously) considered to resemble Hartnell by JNT.
@hugodrax71 I thought exactly the same thing. There's something profoundly sad about it, when you look at the warmth and family feeling of this scene.
Why would 3 and 2 not recognize the writing and the obelisk? 2 had already seen it back when he was 1 and 3 swould have seen it when he was 1 and 2. Yet 2 and 3 act like this discovery is new to them when theyve already seen it.
THe Doctor may be a Timelord but his life is still linear
@ReverendSyn I think that these times that doc meets his other are somehow out off ordinary because meeting ur self in diffrent time should do serious damage to time and space continium, and there might be something like in the chrismas special where the old man says: " I have new memories, how can i have new memories?"
@kassullaonasiaa You are right in saying that they are out of the ordinary; in "The Three Doctors", we find out that it takes a lot of power to make the Doctor cross his own timeline, and that the timelords have to take care when holding the paradox in place :)
@ReverendSyn Time can be rewritten. The second and third doctor are experiencing this event at the same time as their first self. Yes they'll have memories of the event, but those memories only come as the first experiences it. Since they're experiencing it at the same time as the first, they don't know what's going to happen next. The 2010 Christmas special is a good example of how that works.
Richard Hurndell did an excellant job portraying the first Doctor. I would love to see someone repeat this kind of portrayal. How great it would be to see the 1st Doctor meet the 11th.
Correct - this was not William Hartnell. It was in fact Richard Hurndall (middle name Gibbon!), who was cast as the First Doctor due to William Hartnell's sad demise. Hurndall himself died on April 13th 1984, at the age of 73.
Ive been searching for the information elswhere but still cant find it!, this classic adventure was repeated in about august and it was in episodic format in 1984, but can anyone please tell me when the exact date was, i will really appreciate it as it would help me a lot, thank you in advance!
@DWhoFan2011 Hartnell was still alive for the 3 Doctors, just very ill. He did film new material for the special, but did it separately to the others and his footage was put on the scanner where he has a conversation with the other two, claiming he'd got stuck during 'transference'.
All these comments about how the show's been ruined! You realize this has been said with every changing Doctor and with every decade's advances. By all means, update the show and pull in new viewers so the legacy continues. Otherwise it dies with the actors and fans.
Now, try to engage in a new, intelligent debate that befits fans of the series. This "my series is better than yours nyah nyah" conversation is stagnant and meaningless.
@kamwrites Thank you! I'm tired of seeing old school fans whine about how RTD and Steve Moffat ruined Doctor Who, and how David Tennant is unworthy of licking Tom Baker's bootstraps. @orangeapples 9 has said that he doesn't want to come back to the role. But that still leaves 5,7,8,10 and 11 as possible candidates, perhaps for the 50th aniversary in 2013.
@Telfennol Also 6, as Colin Baker never declined to appear on screen again. He was just pissed in the 80s when he was fired by the BBC. Seeing as Tom Baker has returned to produce Audio Dramas as the Doctor again, it's not unlikely he would play in a special episode as well. Granted, 4 and 6 wouldn't look like themselves anymore, but neither did 5 really, and they'll come up with an in-universe eplanation, I'm sure.
They need to do another one of these but with 9, 10, 11, 13, and MAYBE 12... I'm not sure how I feel about 12 being in it. Just wasn't as good... too over the top, even by The Doctor's standards. Trying to hard to appeal to the "hip" crowd I'd say. Well, they kinda wrote out 4 in this one, so I guess they could do the same.
@MrJacMac1986 Which was a legal limit, not a biological one. Eleven said in his appearance on The Sarah Jane Adventures that he doesn't have a limit to the number of times he can regenerate.
@Zeronos93 seems there's more to it then that... after all legalities wouldn't have bothered the Master but he had to bargin for and steal regenerations. his whole deal in this special was to be awarded a new set of regenerations.
Also we know that one of the Doctor's regenerations will be evil.
Wonder if the BBC will have a 50th anniv. episode on Nov 23 2013 with all the Doctors from Tom Baker to Matt Smith? Im talking about an actual scripted story not a crappy reality TV style get together about all the actor sitting around talking reminicing and not getting into character.Reality TV sucks. It was a novelty back in 2000 but it has worn its welcome out.
@fadzlianie no, becuase the doctor can travel back and forth within his own timeline with no paradoxical effects thats what being a timelord is all about controling the effects of time.
Elizabeth looks beautiful in this...I think she is a time lord...look at her here on this in 1974? and then look at her in the sarah jane adventures, she has barely aged...She lives on...in our hearts and souls...maybe she didn't die, I hope she has just got into a TARDIS and travelled around the universe one more time..:( <3 She will be missed, vote up if you agree..<3
The first American edition of the comic book Doctor Who mentions “δ³Σx²” to be the real name of the Doctor, but this episode proves it’s just part of the larger inscription written on the stone pilar (1:22). Neither one the Doctors seems to recognize his name. If they did, he (or they) would have prevented his travelcompagnon to see it. The inscription tells clearly nothing about the Doctor. Like the first version if him says: “...This doesn’t concern us!”
FYI in this episode it wasn't the Master who was after the immortality it was the one responsible for yanking the doctors from their timelines making #5 weak and #4 trapped in somewhere along the way.
@SailorYue Youd think 5 would have been able to see it coming, considering he's already witnessed what happened to him three times from three other perspectives.
@ReverendSyn It's been explained in other stories (in the new series and audio stories) that when the Doctor meets a later version of himself, his memory is erased, convienently meaning he does not know he will meet himself.
@LostandFoundTravel Youd think theyd get along better considering theyre all supposed to be the EXACT SAME GUY, just at four different points in his one life, and not four completely different people like they seem to be regarding each other as.
@ReverendSyn Might you not have contempt or suspicion, or simply disregard for several versions of yourself? If you're the young one, impatience for the old. If the old one, lack of trust in the young...
Also, the 5th, Peter Davison, was only two years older than Matt Smith when he took up the role. Whenever a new actor becomes the Doctor, there's an outrage by some of the fans that they should've just kept the previous one. In ibringthetruth's case it's a debate about the Classic Who against the New Who, and that will never end. There's too many variables to accurately compare the two anyway.
@errorsinconduct I agree...what ever the case there will always be some people who wanted the old doctor to stay on but part of the brilliance of doctor who is that the new actors bring a new take on the personality and yet the writers retain part of the old one. The end result is a doctor that behind it all is the same but at face value is very different, a brilliant way of keeping the series alive and constantly changing without losing that docteryness. But a few will always refuse to accept.
@Ibringthetruth1 The second Doctor was almost ten years younger than the first, with Tom Baker being almost Ten years younger Than John Pertwee - and Peter Davison was the youngest of all.
Why am I pointing all this out? because there have been young doctors before - yes Matt Smith is the youngest but that doesn't make him shit
As for the show being PC, well I can't really think of a time in which is wasn't? don't forget it is a family show, it needs to be watched by children

@Ibringthetruth1 This video isn't showing what the creators wanted at all... the creators wanted an educational show for young children so that they could learn about history and science. That was obviously not very popular so they changed the show radically.
Everything in Doctor Who was always done on the cheap, so I don't understand why you are giving out about that.

Matty09Magic 8 months ago
wouldn't this create a paradox?
fadzlianie 8 months ago
@fadzlianie no, becuase the doctor can travel back and forth within his own timeline with no paradoxical effects thats what being a timelord is all about controling the effects of time.

So many of these actors are dead. This was an excellent episode.

Am I the only one amused by the fact that old high Gallifreyan is a whole bunch of badly written mathematical symbols jumbled together?

The first American edition of the comic book Doctor Who mentions “δ³Σx²” to be the real name of the Doctor, but this episode proves it’s just part of the larger inscription written on the stone pilar (1:22). Neither one the Doctors seems to recognize his name. If they did, he (or they) would have prevented his travelcompagnon to see it. The inscription tells clearly nothing about the Doctor. Like the first version if him says: “...This doesn’t concern us!”

'Doctor Who - The Five Doctors', starring Peter Davidson,Jon Pertwee, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton from BBC."
Slight issue here.. William Hartnell died April 23rd 1975 !
and Peter Davidson didnt become the Doctor until 1981..
Luxorishome 10 months ago
@Luxorishome I think that they changed the actor of first doctor, he looks and sound different than in the original black and white episodes.
kassullaonasiaa 10 months ago
@kassullaonasiaa
Yes, He is an excellent physical likeness to William Hartnell.
Or maybe, back in 1966 the producers asked William Hartnell to crank up the TARDIS and take part in an episode in 1981 :)
Time And Relative Dimensions In Space.. Who'd have thought of that back then ?
Shame Tom Baker didn't take part in the reunion episode, He was amongst my favourite Doctor Who Actors.
That is, the first 4 Doctors and David Tennent.
Luxorishome 10 months ago
@kassullaonasiaa Yup. But he does a passable job.

No, William Hartnell was the only one. an Illegitimate birth. That would have been a stoning offence back in those days.
I met someone once, it made me wonder about William Hartnells passing. away ;)

My god Tegan is so foxy. The Fifth Doctor always had the sexiest companions.
Also, notice how the tablet they're reading is in the shape of a TARDIS control panel! Nice touch there!

@Drwhofanindatardis It's one of the Brigadfier's finest moments. He won't let any harm come to the Doctor.
randomdave30 10 months ago
FYI in this episode it wasn't the Master who was after the immortality it was the one responsible for yanking the doctors from their timelines making #5 weak and #4 trapped in somewhere along the way.
SailorYue 10 months ago
@SailorYue Youd think 5 would have been able to see it coming, considering he's already witnessed what happened to him three times from three other perspectives.
ReverendSyn 10 months ago
@ReverendSyn It's been explained in other stories (in the new series and audio stories) that when the Doctor meets a later version of himself, his memory is erased, convienently meaning he does not know he will meet himself.

Ah! but dont forget, Time is not linear.. that is just an illusion for humans to exist in their life on earth..

Nice bit of subtlety, notice how the tablet they're reading resembles the TARDIS control panel.
JamesOhGoodie 11 months ago
Also, the 5th, Peter Davison, was only two years older than Matt Smith when he took up the role. Whenever a new actor becomes the Doctor, there's an outrage by some of the fans that they should've just kept the previous one. In ibringthetruth's case it's a debate about the Classic Who against the New Who, and that will never end. There's too many variables to accurately compare the two anyway.
errorsinconduct 11 months ago
@errorsinconduct I agree...what ever the case there will always be some people who wanted the old doctor to stay on but part of the brilliance of doctor who is that the new actors bring a new take on the personality and yet the writers retain part of the old one. The end result is a doctor that behind it all is the same but at face value is very different, a brilliant way of keeping the series alive and constantly changing without losing that docteryness. But a few will always refuse to accept.
Sciocc0 11 months ago
Dr Who is a JOKE now.
Ibringthetruth1 11 months ago
