Thanks FF - Yes that would be smarter for the way the balls were set up. In hindsight, I should have set the cue ball in a spot that made the shot on the eight ball much thinner (like a foot off the rail) - that would have better illustrated the idea of hitting the cueball a little harder so it goes off the bottom rail to get position rather than trying to hit it super soft like my initial beginner instincts tell me to do.
when you hit it soft you still had a pretty easy angle on the 9 when it's that close to the pocket

Keep practicing. Its hard to see the cut angle from my view but would you be able to cheat the pocket to hold up the cue ball? Try that option.
