I'm glad that in the Muse of Fire speech he pronounced "puissance" in the correct, metrical (trisyllabic) way. Many actors today, including highly acclaimed Shakespeareans, who have little ear for the verses' music, insist on pronouncing it Frenchly, with two syllables, contrary to the rhythm of the line. So, good on Gielgud! (Another similar mistake is "aspect", which in Shakespeare is always on the first syllable, including the Peasant Slave speech.)
How can you, as these (great actors) clearly did, confuse the chorus' rabble rousing and scene setting for the stocks utterances with the major character-advancing speeches (soliloquies) in the serious dramas? Great chalk and bitter cheese.
The beauty of this is that it's clear the best Shakespearean actors haven't even been born yet.
That's true as long as you, fellow punters, continue to believe that there is nothing wrong with the plays but there's a great deal wrong with the actors.
I must say I agree with you. Folk like Gielgud of course were great and had wonderful voices but I agree that we have yet to see the best Shakespearean actors.
Didnt he have a boyfriend?

@ThingsTerrestrial That's a quote from Melvyn Bragg's program on Alec Guinness

@LowellV100 : As well it's from "Ralph Richardson: An Actor's Life" by Garry O'Connor...

@ThingsTerrestrial Yeah, I see it's in the Olivier Special as well, all inclusive I suppose in the Melvyn Bragg library.

Well said. Maybe part of the beauty of drama is that it takes a lot of air to make it work.
Let's hope we have many generations of windbags. And if they all get better, as your theory goes, all the better for us.

"the chorus' rabble rousing and scene setting for the stocks utterances with the major character-advancing speeches (soliloquies) " blah blah blah
has no hot air in it?

I simply adored Sir John.. the gold standard by which all other performers are measured.
Today I cannot think of even one who can compare~ I'd truly be hard-pressed to name anyone!
