league to date........winning 5 straight Stanley Cups. Had it been an original "blow me" six team, they would have been so quiet you could hear a mouse pissing on cotton.
with the Isles having home ice, it gave them a big advantage. Everyone knew what the NHL and Edmonton were thinking when that announcement was made "all we/they have to do is win one of those two games at the Coliseum and that big advantage instantly changes."
The truth is, the league did not want some 12 year old franchise from the suburbs, showing up the most storied franchise in the league (the Montreal Canadiens) by achieving what is the most coveted accomplishment in the
@mrceebees14 In the 1983-4 Regular Season, Edmonton finished FIRST overall with 119 points, and the Islanders SECOND with 104. So in the "old format," the Oilers would have played the first 2 at home, plus games 5 & 7 if necessary. In the 1983-4 format, over 7 games, the Islanders would actually have home advantage (games 1-2, 6-7), even though they finished with 15 LESS points. One could be excused for suspecting a conspiracy FOR the Islanders, not against them with this set-up!
No sports franchise in the history of professional sports has ever achieved that. Not the Yankees, Celtics, Bulls, Manchester United, Brazilian national team, no team has ever won 19 consecutive.
Isles were robbed in this series with that last minute bullshit 2-3-2 format that was announced immediately after the Isles shocked everyone by beating Montreal in the previous series. The league tried to justify the change with "saving travel cost," which is a total crock of shit for more then one reason.
1) Regardless of it being the finals, there is no way in hell changing the format for one series would yield enough savings.
2) The Isles and Oilers were unbeatable at home that year,
What was more impressive, the Isles' 4 straight, and five cup finals in a row (19 playoff series wins), or the Oilers 5 cups in 7 years? I'll go with the Isles.
@jazzguitar2010 19 playoff series wins trumps everything period. speaking of the islander oiler rivalry, when the two teams met in the first final 1983 the islanders held the greatest scoring arsenault hockey has ever seen to 5 goals in the entire series. wayne gretzky himself may tell you the islanders could very well be the best hockey dynasty ever, he had total respect and was in awe of their greatness.
@znogypogy Agreed. I've heard Gretzky talk about the Islanders in many interviews. He talks about them as though he learned so much from them. No doubt he and Messier, and the rest of the Oilers had huge respect for them, especially after being swept. That sweep was one of the most impressive Cup sweeps in history, and I think the Isles regard that as their best Cup of the four, at least I think Potvin said that.
Ken Linseman = asshole!

@mrceebees14 agree, but lets remember the 19 consecutive playoff series wins never achieved by any original six team and will never ever happen again
