really good, but when you dont show the picture of the model you are drawing it is hard to know how skilled you are. I mean if what youre painting actually looks like it is supposed to
Approximately how many hours did that take you? Every time I paint people it takes me hours to do each part (like eyes, etc.) I just want to learn how to paint faster.
How did u learn to draw humans, did u copy them at first?I can draw cars and dragons and all that stuff but humans are just impossible for me to draw..
eh! you're amazing:)! did you draw with pencil first? ON CANVASo_O whenever i draw on canvas with pencil and then paint ovcer it it goes all icky and smudged:/ like the pencil smudges under the paint. ugh.
why dont we just let the "work" do the talking rather than debate on brain sides which obviously needs more research to understand than what we all know currently .
Well I disagree with that. It is a well known FACT that left handed people, who are mostly right-brained dominant, are more artistically capable when it comes to drawing. On the other hand, most right handed people are left brained dominant, and therefore less inclined when it comes to drawing--at least, in an 'advanced' level.
Yes but the right brain controls the left side of your body and the left brain controls the right side, so it would be a definate sign which brain side you use most.
Wrong. Dominance doesn't equal competence. It just indicates which side of the brain you use more. There are people who are left-brain dominant whose verbal skills are horrible. There are people who are right-brain dominant whose mathematics are terrible (right-brain being associated with skill in visual reasoning and mathematics).
Just because you are left-handed doesn't mean you'll be better than a right-hander at math/drawing but worse in writing, and just because you are right-handed doesn't mean you'll be better at writing but worse in math/drawing.
One final point. Right-brain competence means competence in spatial reasoning, mathematics, etc. Suppose someone has complete expertise in that area. That doesn't make them better artists in my book. At best they can copy what they see as well as a camera can. Creativity, imagination, etc. come more from the cognitive side of the brain, the left side, and to me that's more important than being able to just copy what you see and measure spaces accurately.
Wow you almost got your facts straight for a second there. you're getting your sides all mixed up, but let me correct that very simple mistake you just made. actually, right-brain competence is competence in visual, perceptual, and intuitive information, whereas the LEFT brain is designed for arithmetic, logical, and analytic thinking. The right brain functions in a non-verbal manner. hence why the right brain has been associated with the realm of creativity.
again, as I have mentioned in the previous replies (perhaps you may want to read them first before attempting to correct any of my points), a majority of lefty artists (not all) tend to be more creative in the structure of their drawings whereas only a small minority of right handers are more right-brained dominant when it comes to their creative and artistic abilities.
@trickmastermonkey The sides are not mixed up. Left-handedness is generally associated with *right-brain* dominance. Right handers tend to be left-brained. Visual and spatial problems are generally solved on the right side. There's a lot of debate about which side of the hemisphere controls what (it's only through correlational studies that they've determined which areas of the brain are busiest during certain activities), but you are the one who's mixed up about handedness and brain dominance.
The left brain is very linear: it places things in sequential order whereas the right brain looks at the whole picture and quickly seeks to determine the spatial relationships of all kinds of different parts as they relate to the whole. that's probably what you meant, but got them in the wrong side.
@trickmastermonkey What you said about left and right brains here is generally accepted. But you are assuming that left-handers, being most commonly right-brain dominant, have better right-brain abilities. This is where you're wrong. Someone who's right-handed isn't necessarily a better creative writer than a left-hander, and a left-hander isn't necessarily a better visual artist. Just because you use one side of your brain more doesn't mean that you use it better.
@trickmastermonkey But let's go with the debatable idea that left-handers are always better at visual and spatial reasoning. That doesn't make them better artists still. They would be able to copy what they see better if that's the case since they would be better able to measure distances and angles. Art, if anything, is about *communication*. Cognitive and verbal reasoning is generally associated with the *left* side of the brain (the one right handers tend to use more).
well yes of course. i was just carefully pointing out that in terms of the differences in the left-right brain abilities of left handed vs. right handed people, MOST left handers (not all) have a slight, shall i say, natural "artistic advantage" in their natural ability to draw compared to MOST right handed people.
I would have to agree with trickmaster, i'm an artist that my friends and family consider "excellent"(i'm not egotistical, that's why i state what people tell me rather than my own opinion). I was raised right-handed, but have come to find that i am either ambidextrous, or was meant to be left-handed.
@EulogyfortheAngels And I am a professional animator who is *right-handed*. I understood light and shadow and shaded my drawings at the age of 7 without any instruction, something so uncommon (many people don't get past the line drawing phase even into their adulthood until they are properly taught) that I was accepted into NYAA at age 14. But I wouldn't take myself as an example and generalize that right-handers are the best artists.
Depends on the kind of art, however. Right-brain dominance helps when drawing from observation because people who are left-brain dominant and therefore rely more on cognition tend to want to draw what they see in their minds rather than what they actually see. If you're a cartoonist, however, visual and spatial reasoning skills aren't going to help as much and cognition might actually help in such cases.
@trickmastermonkey While I know you are trying to be careful by calling it a 'slight advantage', I'd have to say there is no advantage *over other people*. Being left-handed means that *you* are probably better at drawing than *you* are at writing or speaking. But it doesn't mean you are going to be better than the average right-hander at drawing. You could be exceptionally bad at using your right-brain.
@trickmastermonkey Apologies for the length of the reply but I think it's a very important point. There are no studies that show that left-handers are better at drawing than right-handers. There are studies that have shown that people who have damaged the right side of the brain can't draw well, and those who have damaged the left side can't write or speak well. But again dominance does not equal competence. A right-handed person can easily use their right-brain better than a left hander.
@stinky472 First off, I just want to thank you for that clarification, I appreciate you taking the time to offer relatively new insight after we have already discussed this over a year ago. speaking of which btw also, I want to congratulate you for you are officially the longest replier to ever reply back to my comments since I first signed up for an account back in 2007. and yes, no you are absolutely correct in everything you said almost, so no worries, my hat goes off to you.
