Rob was allowed to like this song and play it like those million covers of this song on youtube. He was paying homage to a great bass piece. He did it very well I'll add as well.
Why does anyone have a problem with this? This is in memory of cliff and you guys are bitching about it? Cliff would call you a "DICK" if he was still alive.

Rob is amazing, but I agree: he shouldn't rip it live. He should write his own which would be great all on its own. But need we forget this isn't the metallica we knew and loved.
I'm surprised because in general Trujillo is a much more skilled bass player than young Cliff, but here his tone and approach are not even close to as masterful as Burton's.

Why are so many people getting offended by this? Damn, grow up guys! You don't care about the fact that Rob are playing the intro to For Whom the Bell Tolls, James are playing the intro to Call of Ktulu (which Dave wrote) and yeah, many other tracks...What Rob did was brilliant and beatiful. I am pretty sure Cliff would appreciate that. I see no reason to bury this song and forget all about it.. Rob is a great replacement for Cliff and it was great that he played this one live now.
@MrZombow I don't hate rob, he's a great player, but to me this is not a song by burton, this song IS burton, so when I see a metallica cover player, or another metallica player, playing that notes, I think that he can't play this as good as burton, simply because he is not. so it seems to me more like a use of the song, than a tribute to the person. If you want to give him a tribute, so write a tribute song by yourself..I know that it may seem stupid, but I tried to explain..
@MrZombow well said, i felt total respect for cliff and the whole family from this entire set list. that is one of the greatest peaks in their entire discography and if you listen closely, just like randy rhoads, you dont see how it worked, but it not only worked, it was fucking brilliant and left you just gasping for air. for a solo to go into a great song and riff.. that cant be forgotten.
@MrZombow Understood, but the way Cliff played it will be buried because Rob doesn't play with a wah pedal, which is basically a key part of how the song is supposed to sound, plus when Cliff played it he never played it the same he was freestyling while he played it and he was going nuts on stage. Rob is a great bassist, but Anesthesia will always be Cliff's song!!!

I am a guitarrist, yet my favorite instrument is bass, and Cliff Burton was the best bassit ever, but Damnit, I really like the way Robert plays, and this was awesome, Cliff we will never forget you, and long live Robert :)
@MpchermidafilhoA Hey it was just an opinion, you dont have to be pissy about it. Plus i have no disrespect for Rob, he is great (Sorry for saying decent earlier, that downplays him), but I just prefer Cliff and Jason. Besides, how can people see so much variety between albums, and not be expected to have different opinions? Personally first 3 'Tallica albums were my fav, and that's not gonna change because someone else wants it to.
During the bass auditions in '03, Lars made this comment: "when we saw Cliff play for the first time, we knew he was the guy. There was no question. He hit it out of the park.....and that's where gets interesting, because if Cliff Burton were to show up today, maybe he wouldn't be the guy either".
The problem Jason had is he was forever compared to Cliff to the point of resentment. In order to make it work with Rob, Metallica had to put Cliff behind them. I think Metallica is better for it.
Also, for those who say "Rob is better", Jason could only do what he was allowed to do. When you listen to Blackened, My Friend of Misery, Where The Wild Things Are....they were all co-written by Newsted and are very unique and awesome songs. Maybe if the others would've loosened the leash they put on him, Jason could've created more songs - and 3 songs over 16 years is a small sample. Personally, I think Metallica held themselves back for all those years b/c they couldn't let go of the past.
observe the timidity of Robert Trujillo, at the end of anesthesia, he thought the public would criticize it by playing anesthesia, but not because he played incredibly well anesthesia.
I can't believe how much hate he's getting here. Rob did a brilliant, albeit slightly different, version of the song and apparently that's sacred ground? Tell that to the billions of youtube covers. Also, of course it wasn't perfect, it's was spontaneous filler while Apocolypta were getting their gear sorted. Seriously, he's not Cliff, obviously, but Rob is clearly a brilliant bass player and this is a solid cover.
@Nightscrm well about the whole moving on thing... im 13, i never experienced metallica with Cliff. And i bet they never let Jason play this, and Jason is ten times better than Rob. I can see why they would want him to play it but its just not right.
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC WOW!! I would have to respectfully dissagree there... First of all, I dig Jason... He is a cool guy, and he got the gig initially, and I can respect that. Now, maybe you dont play, or havent been for very long, but anyone who knows, KNOWS that if there ever were a dueling basses stand off between the two, hands down Rob would blow Jason away with his awesomeness!!! Rob is the best thing to happen to Metallica in years!!!
@CAlanRobinson I agree, Rob is one of the best things thats happened to Metallica in a long time, but would you think it was ok if Jason played this, maybe you would or maybe not. I dont know. Im just sayin that this was cliffs song, and I think that it would be best if neither Rob or Jason played it during a concert. Thats my opinion so... respectfully deal with it.
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC Ok.. I will wrap this up by saying this... I think the event was a special "History of Metallica" kinda event. I don't think Rob would make a habit of doing it at a regular show. I believe the very fact that he didn't play the whole thing (even though I believe he could have..) showed that he himself holds that song as sacred territory. My final thought is the crowd... There were no boo's, only cheers. I think it was the moment that was different...
...there's only 1 person who can play this track...that's Cliff himself....just look at him sitting über-relaxed. At least, try to look like you're enjoying playing this......
ARRIBA TRUJILLO! LO MEJOR D METALLICA DESDE CLIFF
Come on, Robert is the best thing since Cliff Burton? Come on! Jason Newsted did himself a favor when he jumped ship on these guys to be in a better band. If you don't know what band that is then you are a dope. Robert did a good job, and yeah you are right, who can get upset about him playing this. Some people are still just really protective of the memory of a super awesome musician and person. But don't say that Robert is better than Jason, that's just fucking ridiculous.
@misspiss13 Actualy it's not rediculous from a techniqual stand point Rob is a better bass player then Jason, Jason has amazing vocals though and as James ages and his vocals thin out Jason missing back up vocals have become and will become far more noticeable. You could also argue that if some new life/fresh meat had not of been brought into Metallica in the form of Robert then perhaps James/Lar's enthusiasim to keep going would not have been there and maybe we wouldn't see anymore Metallica.
I mean listen I agree that this is sacred and of course there's a reason they didn't play it since Cliff, but these concerts were about celebrating Metallica's past, and they could have paraded every musician they've ever liked on stage and it wouldn't be anywhere near a complete retrospective without this happening. This was a good time for it to be done, and it was done honorably.
As much as i respect rob, i think they wasnt the best thing to do. and all of you saying "cliff would have wanted him to play it". need to shut the hell up because none of you know cliff
@counternub i know i dont, that is why im not making any assumptions on what he would say or want to be done, im just saying rob could have played something else
Rob is an absolutely terrific bassist, what Metallica fan would ever compare rob to cliff, I'm not saying one is better than the other, but to all rob haters. Cliff is dead what are you Gona do about it?
Fucking ignorant, bigoted, hateful pansies Metallica fans truly are. Cliff would rather live than be put through this increasingly insane worship and martyrdom he has. People have no idea just how good Rob really is because of this. Cliff would only want bassists, in Metallica and not, to enjoy and play his work! Who cares if people fuck up, or don't do it the "right way", there is no right way damnit, Apocalyptica proved that shit by playing metal on cellos!
this proves once and for all that robert is a better bass player than jason newsted. don't get me worng, jason is good and i love his backing vocals, but robert is much better than him and robert is perfect for metallica. Way to honor Cliff man, YOU FUCKING RULE. seeing you play that brings a tear to my eye.
Robert was the best thing to happen to Metallica since Cliffs death!! Yes, he is the only one who plays Orion correctly, and there is nothing wrong with him playing Anesthesia... If millions of Youtubers can post videos of themselves playing Anesthesia, why can't Robert play it!? If there was this line you shouldn't cross, why are millions of bass playing Metallica fans learning it and playing it on youtube!!! So youre saying if they are real fans, they should cut it out!!! Don't be a dope!!
@notremike13 So... what you are saying... using the same standard set by your own statement, is that Metallica WASN'T Metal before Jason? I don't think that was too smart of a thing to say in a room full of Metallica fans, huh? Yeah... that's what I'm thinking too...
@notremike13 Jason was metal as fuck when he wanted to be, but let's face it: Metallica were more metal before AND after Jason. They released their least-metal-like material with him in the band, and he left them for the very un-metal Echobrain. I love Jason but it's silly to say he was the most Metal thing that ever happened to them when you listen to the albums he's actually on and ignore his live vocals/headbanging.
@thenewyorkpauls you say jason made them "less" metal, but you obviously havent heard flotsam and jetsam, his old band, they were fucking awesome metal
he blinks really weirdly

I am a guitarrist, yet my favorite instrument is bass, and Cliff Burton was the best bassit ever, but Damnit, I really like the way Robert plays, and this was awesome, Cliff we will never forget you, and long live Robert :)

@Gizzcat Rod...decent???
You clearly don't know anything about music...They didn't played Orion full (and another songs) in years, now with Rob they play!
MpchermidafilhoA 4 weeks ago
@MpchermidafilhoA Hey it was just an opinion, you dont have to be pissy about it. Plus i have no disrespect for Rob, he is great (Sorry for saying decent earlier, that downplays him), but I just prefer Cliff and Jason. Besides, how can people see so much variety between albums, and not be expected to have different opinions? Personally first 3 'Tallica albums were my fav, and that's not gonna change because someone else wants it to.

NOPE. THIS IS SHIT. he plays it like a teacher would. sitting down on a chair...... just a little too fast.. to impress the student.
and then Lars comes in with the drum beat... and he has no idea that he's meant to start playing the rest of the song!
it's shit with a capital S

During the bass auditions in '03, Lars made this comment: "when we saw Cliff play for the first time, we knew he was the guy. There was no question. He hit it out of the park.....and that's where gets interesting, because if Cliff Burton were to show up today, maybe he wouldn't be the guy either".
The problem Jason had is he was forever compared to Cliff to the point of resentment. In order to make it work with Rob, Metallica had to put Cliff behind them. I think Metallica is better for it.
meadowbrook700 1 month ago

Would have been badass if they played the full song then went straight into Whiplash
DaleTatum 1 month ago

NIGHTSCM U R 13 ...SO YOU DONT KNOW NOTHING ..KEEP LISTENING TO GOOD CHARLOTTE AND BANDS LIKE THAT ...
PS :IM A METALLICA FUN SINCE 85 ...ROB IS NOT BETTER THAN JASON ...AND JASON IS NOT BETTER THAN ROBERT....BUT ROBERT IS THE RIGHT GUY FOR METALLICA
ashtonjim 1 month ago
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC WOW!! I would have to respectfully dissagree there... First of all, I dig Jason... He is a cool guy, and he got the gig initially, and I can respect that. Now, maybe you dont play, or havent been for very long, but anyone who knows, KNOWS that if there ever were a dueling basses stand off between the two, hands down Rob would blow Jason away with his awesomeness!!! Rob is the best thing to happen to Metallica in years!!!
CAlanRobinson 1 month ago
@CAlanRobinson I agree, Rob is one of the best things thats happened to Metallica in a long time, but would you think it was ok if Jason played this, maybe you would or maybe not. I dont know. Im just sayin that this was cliffs song, and I think that it would be best if neither Rob or Jason played it during a concert. Thats my opinion so... respectfully deal with it.
CarlsonsRaidersUSMC 1 month ago
@CarlsonsRaidersUSMC Ok.. I will wrap this up by saying this... I think the event was a special "History of Metallica" kinda event. I don't think Rob would make a habit of doing it at a regular show. I believe the very fact that he didn't play the whole thing (even though I believe he could have..) showed that he himself holds that song as sacred territory. My final thought is the crowd... There were no boo's, only cheers. I think it was the moment that was different...
CAlanRobinson 1 month ago
...there's only 1 person who can play this track...that's Cliff himself....just look at him sitting über-relaxed. At least, try to look like you're enjoying playing this......

ARRIBA TRUJILLO! LO MEJOR D METALLICA DESDE CLIFF
MMluis16 1 month ago
Come on, Robert is the best thing since Cliff Burton? Come on! Jason Newsted did himself a favor when he jumped ship on these guys to be in a better band. If you don't know what band that is then you are a dope. Robert did a good job, and yeah you are right, who can get upset about him playing this. Some people are still just really protective of the memory of a super awesome musician and person. But don't say that Robert is better than Jason, that's just fucking ridiculous.
misspiss13 1 month ago

MMluis16 1 month ago
@misspiss13 Actualy it's not rediculous from a techniqual stand point Rob is a better bass player then Jason, Jason has amazing vocals though and as James ages and his vocals thin out Jason missing back up vocals have become and will become far more noticeable. You could also argue that if some new life/fresh meat had not of been brought into Metallica in the form of Robert then perhaps James/Lar's enthusiasim to keep going would not have been there and maybe we wouldn't see anymore Metallica.
joshski85 1 month ago 2
I mean listen I agree that this is sacred and of course there's a reason they didn't play it since Cliff, but these concerts were about celebrating Metallica's past, and they could have paraded every musician they've ever liked on stage and it wouldn't be anywhere near a complete retrospective without this happening. This was a good time for it to be done, and it was done honorably.

Rob is an absolutely terrific bassist, what Metallica fan would ever compare rob to cliff, I'm not saying one is better than the other, but to all rob haters. Cliff is dead what are you Gona do about it?
MsDasnake 1 month ago
Fucking ignorant, bigoted, hateful pansies Metallica fans truly are. Cliff would rather live than be put through this increasingly insane worship and martyrdom he has. People have no idea just how good Rob really is because of this. Cliff would only want bassists, in Metallica and not, to enjoy and play his work! Who cares if people fuck up, or don't do it the "right way", there is no right way damnit, Apocalyptica proved that shit by playing metal on cellos!

@CAlanRobinson thing is that jason brought metal to METALlica
notremike13 1 month ago
@notremike13 So... what you are saying... using the same standard set by your own statement, is that Metallica WASN'T Metal before Jason? I don't think that was too smart of a thing to say in a room full of Metallica fans, huh? Yeah... that's what I'm thinking too...
CAlanRobinson 1 month ago
@notremike13 Jason was metal as fuck when he wanted to be, but let's face it: Metallica were more metal before AND after Jason. They released their least-metal-like material with him in the band, and he left them for the very un-metal Echobrain. I love Jason but it's silly to say he was the most Metal thing that ever happened to them when you listen to the albums he's actually on and ignore his live vocals/headbanging.
