  • What are you using to strike the pipes? You do a great job!

  • Thanks :-) My paddles in this video are made from a garden knee pad cushion thingy and paint stirrers

  • hey dude, could you try playing Flux by Bloc Party? it sounds like a song that should be played on PVC. Its pretty fast but sounds cool! its easy to find just search Bloc Party Flux and you should find it.

  • U R GREAT!!!!!!!!!!

  • love the sound

  • Dude that's awesome! Quick questions! How many feet and what size pipe/wood did you use? And how do you make the stick/mallets? Thanks so much and keep it up!

  • -i think it's 5x1x3...but that's just off the top of my head

-the pipe i used was 2" ABS pipe

-the foam for my paddles are from a garden knee pad cushion thingy and the handles are paint stirrers

  • ok and how many feet of the ABS pipe did you use?

  • a little over 100 feet

  • That is really cool. Great video. Did u make that instrument? Cause it looks like a professional made it. I think it's really cool that u can play songs by the blue man group. The only thing is that u played the song way slower than they play it. I'm not saying u suck or that I could do better. I just wanted to let u know wat i thought. Great Video.

  • Thank you! Yeah, I made it :-)

I totally agree with you though that I was playing it slow in this video :-/

    Thanks for your help.

  • hey, this may sound weird, but where you at a blue man group concert with some guys with blue-painted faces at the concert playing at universal studios florida? if so, where you sitting in the "splash zone" 'cause i sat behind someone who looked just like you!

  • haha nope sorry, that wasn't me. i have not seen that show yet...but i will be this summer ;-)

  • with you lol

  • Nice :D

    very nice!

not the smae sound but very amazing!!!

  • You'd make a good Blue Man. Also, Rods and Cones is my favorite song from them! Thanks for playing it. =)

  • Very nice.....!

  • Man i hope you become a Blue Man.

    you are unbelievable.

    ROCK ON BLUE MAN JR.

  • wow... made this thing yourself??? so yes.. can you send me some tips about how to build one?? realy love it..

  • well, try to invest a lot of your time trying to cut your PVC if you already have some. also, try to get as many 90 degree joints as you can, and those should help you get the tubes where you want them to point. just don't give up on it, otherwise it would be a huge waste of time.

  • One thing (ok, maybe two). Try and relax a bit more. You're using a lot of arm movement, and it's affecting your timing a bit. If you relax and use more wrist, it'll flow together easier.

  • i agree that it would help with the timing, but the problem is is that it's not too loud if it's with mainly wrist movement. also a real blue man uses more arm movement, so i was trying to imitate that a little bit ;-)

  • well... i don´t know if that thing is home/made or bought... but maybe you should try to look for microphones or something? would be cool if you could use an amplifier on that! :D

  • it's pretty loud as it is, but yeah mics would help. problem is, is that i built it with the tubes not going in all of the same directions so i'd have to buy a whole lot of mics.

  • now forgive me for being critical, but i don't like the fact that your tubes aren't tuned right, it's sort of unpleasing for bits and pieces, but very good job playing that song.

  • i totally agree and i've been wanting to tune it for a while, but just haven't found the time yet! :-(

  • Are those paint brushes?

Closed cell foam rubber works better. It has less clackyness.

Not that paintbrushes don't sound fine.

  • no, i used plastic paint stirrers and some foam stuff (from a garden knee pad cushion thing). and yeah...i agree that closed cell foam rubber would be better, but it was the closest thing that i could get to it lol

  • how much did it cost you to build it and did you or who build it?

  • yeah i built it. and it cost me 300 bucks ish lol. it would have cost list if i didn't use as many corners as i had. i've heard some people have done it in under 100 bucks (less notes though)

  • im building one for a physics project right now, how do you find the lengths to get each note?

  • I guessed and checked, but there is a spreadsheet online with note lengths made by someone else. I would give you the link directly, but youtube won't allow it...

so if you would like it. go to the 'blue man library' (you can google it), then go to the forums section/board and scroll to the tube talkers section. from there, look for a thread titled 'here's the pvc spreadsheet' (it's on the second page).

i hope that helps you out. good luck on your physics project!

  • there are actually equations that can help you figure out the frequencies and notes based on length of pipe and diameter

  • In my marching band show, we play Time To Start, so i've been helping my band director build one. It really sucks I can't play it though, since I play snare. Anyway, he got some store bought rubber silicon spatulas, and those sound pretty good.

  • you are a good in dis number!

  • dude ur really good and lucky to have one of those!!!

  • wow that is really good how did you learn to play that?

  • well i built it so it was set up like a piano. that way i could play it (somewhat) easily haha

  • o ic thats smart

  • do you play piano before this and had musical experience

  • yeah, i've been playing piano for like 10 years now and i played a marimba back in elementary school and have one on loan right now :-)

  • nice job

    one question..

how did you get the exact notes??

  • the tubes are cut to certain lengths so when they're struck on the end they produce a specific note.

  • I had to log in to rate this

    very good job

I love the Rods and Cones song

    nice instrument

  • wow man you really nailed it, very nice job.
