I see all these shows and videos and tuturials for making jewelry out of this polymer clay, but never in my life have I seen anyone over the age of 8 wearing any of it.

@TheOobster that's because the really well done pieces do not look like they are made with Polymer clay, and the pieces you are talking about are cute stuff, made for kids.

Can I also use ordinary modelling clay in this kind of project? If yes what temperature it must cook?

modeling clay will not harden when you bake it (it would actually probably melt). You have to use polymer clay (some brands are sculpey and Fimo). I use sculpey and it bakes at 225F for 10-15 minutes.
