mate you need to make a wire in tube type of generator (reduces capacitance).. and also set your gap without the generator hooked up move them out till they just stop arcing (maybe ad another mm or 2) and that should stop constant arcs,

An arc is a dead short, so there is no safety there. I used a similar transformer, and used glass as an insulator between two wire mesh squares. The glass is larger than the wire mesh squares. The full 15,000 volts is applied to the wire mesh plates. One electrode of the transformer to one wire mesh plate the other electrode from the transformer to the other wire mesh plate. The glass in between keeps it from arcing. AND WAY Too much ozone for my 2000 square foot home within 30 minutes created.

I made a negative ions generator but it is based on the cockcroft-walton design to step up the voltage and the "optical device" is made out of sharp needles of 25mm length passed tightly through a 4 mm pvc plate and a copper plate with the ground wire on it.

The holes in the copper plate are 25mm divided by 4=6,25mm diameter!

It works great!

That Neon sign transformer can kill you. 30 ma at that voltage is way more than you need. A better power supply can be made using a flyback transformer and a couple of common power transistors, ect. The high frequency corona discharge really produces ozone well.

We are also a manufacturer of commercial and residential ozone deodorizers. Our facility is based in upstate NY--you really want to be careful with these, as they can be extremely dangerous if you're not sure what you're doing! In terms of being impractical-we sell to top hotel chains, car retailers, and hunters because they "shock" treat odors and get them out within a few hours by destroying the odor molecule. Ozone in high concentrations is also not recommended to breath in.

when you add the safety gap you cause a resonate oscillation, what you need is a resistance aka resistor, basically add resistance between the capacitor and your transformer and gap until you cannot get blue sparks, the resistor will allow the excitation of the corona but will suppress the few tens of peak amps that you are seeing at you safety gap, also ozone generation works better if you use a higher freq source.

@DuMaNhieu2 Thanks! I found one guy that really knew what he was talking about. This man stated that a cylindrical design of metal mesh, glass tubes, and a center rod is best to eliminate the capacitance issue. My plates are amplify the capacitance issue due to the excessive surface area.

Ozone (O3) is another allotrope of oxygen. It is formed from electrical discharges or ultraviolet light acting on O2. It is an important component of the atmosphere which is vital in preventing harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun from reaching the earth's surface. Aerosols in the atmosphere have a detrimental effect on the ozone layer. Large holes in the ozone layer are forming over the polar regions and these are increasing in size annually. ozone is toxic! Undiluted ozone is bluish in colour.

I don't get you guys.

Use a DC/DC supply. (a well made flyback psu would put 30kV, easy)

Rectifying solves _A LOT_ of arching.

Big resistors series with the transformer. 5-20Mohm. lower currents=safer..

Use a sharp needle as the anode, and place it in the center of a long insulating cylinder.(1-3" dia.) pointing to one one of it's ends.

Put a thin metal jacket on the exterior of the cylinder as a cathode and ground it.

Plastic meshes at the ends=fingerproof.

Make more if needed.

@yo6ial You fail to realize that high voltage DC does not create a corona. Arcs create a very tiny amount of ozone. On the other hand, AC creates tons of ozone. You *may* be able to get away with using an old, unrectified flyback; however, these are hard to find or make.

The most stable and less probable to arch coronal discharge is a positive direct current one.

AC causes ionization both ways. And a lot of O3 to become O2 back before leaving the plasma..

When I was like 12 or 13 yrs old I captured ozone in a glase jar using a oil burner transformer. I then tosed a moth in it to see what would happen. The moth was knocked out for like a minute or two, high levels of ozone is not something I would want to be exposed to for long durration of time. Powerstats (variable AC transformers) would work great at lowering the voltage, unike light dimers which creat a pulsed (stepped) sine-wave output.

If you can smell it, there is too much Ozone being generated. Ozone is dangerous to humans and plants even at very low concentrations. Levels as low as 0.12 parts per million have a negative effect on human respiratory systems. The ozone concentration needed to kill mold (shock treatment) is well beyond the level that is safe to breathe.  Use a timer, 2 to three minutes per hour, if you can smell it turn down the time frequency..

there is an easier way of doing this. Just take a glass tube and line it with mesh metal and send electricity through it. I work for a company that does this, so its an everyday thing for me. If you have any questions let me know.

I run Ozone UV lamps as I ran into situations I felt would be not the safest thing to have running such as yours. The OIII lamps don't produce near as much ozone as the Corona Discharge does like yours but thier safe. You can buy just the lamp with the quad prong style and some regular ballasts are capable of firing them up on the starting circuit even without a delay. The lamps come in many socket configs, much safer and still produce great results. Cheers.

for sharing your project...At our university we are also building an ozone device but i fear we already blew the transformer. It worked for about an hour but then stopped. i was informed that the transformer -which is the same as yours-got really hot. Is there any way to test the transformer to see if it's burned out?

@GnosisMan50 The resistance on the secondary coil should change, the input current (measured with an amp-clamp) should be very low, and there may be little or no secondary coil output. Otherwise, I'm not sure how to test the transformer.

I never got around to posting this, but others have informed me of a better design: Rather than plates, there should be a glass tube with metal mesh around it with a solid wire through the center. Much less capacitance. I'll probably try & post soon.

@CiaranVanDon Ozone generators are usually industrial and are used only when required as Ozone is not healthy to breath frequently. For instance, you could rent an ozone generator to help get the moldy smell out of a previously flooded room. These generators have timers are are used with the room evacuated. They may market these as "air fresheners" that make you feel better. This is false. Ozone is a pollutant and should be only used appropriately.

Use a light dimmer to power the transformer. Just rotate it until the corona is formed and then back it off a little. My homemade gen has been going for years like that.........

You can create high voltage with a single solid state piece of equipment; it suspends a spherical layer of h2o about itself in it's function. You'll need a cnc lathe to build it out of 312 stainless steel. I have plans. I made one a while ago but I ran it too high too long and it destroyed itself.

The watts burned by an O3 generator is roughly proportional to the frequency, the voltage, and the capacitance (f*V*C). I built an

O3 generator last night that consists of bare #22 stranded wire centered in a 25 mm dia quartz tube, 6" long, wrapped on the outside of the

tube w/ Al window screen. At 12kVs and 60Hz this consumes 100W. Your C is huge compared with this. My guess is that the xformers are burning up due to overload. Use a clamp-on Ammeter on the 110V side to check this out.

one way to make ozone, in a kind of crazy and inefficient way is to shine a high intensity u.v light on some ice. it creates a layer of hydrogen peroxide on the top of the ice which oxidises into O2 and h2o, where the O2 is then reduced to O3 under u.v light. its more of a low-tech way, not nearly as effective as the electronic ones.

@acidbath32 You're probably safe as it's probably not putting out much Ozone. High output ozone generators are designed to run with nobody inside the room: Ozone can be very unhealthy at high levels. There are no proven positive effects of actuially being in a room with an ozone generator.

Safety first: You can kill your self with this. Make sure you always have 2 inches between and high voltage and anything else. Make an ozone cell by putting a large copper tape on one side of a piece of glass and a narrow on on the other. These are the electrodes. Connect your high voltage supply and watch the sparks. You should only need 3-7kV. 15kV is way too much.

You will be limited in power doing that. The resistance between the plates is not near infinity because you will have some coronal leakage, which is what ionizes the air. You will need to find the impedance of the hot side of your flyback to make sure it's lower, or more preferably equal to your ionizer plate load.

Of course I also think the NST is a little overkill.

But, for ozone maker, we never need high power as the input,

or, high current as the output...

All we need is high voltage at low amperage for the output...

This would produce corona discharge more efficiently...

Some can, some can't. The ones that can have some internal protection circuit. Any transformer will go bad under short circuit conditions. The spark plugs is a smart idea.

I'm tempted to see how "official" ozone generators are made. Yes, I had to trim some of the grid back to reduce it already. It's not doing it much any more; just have a safety gap the fires all the time. I'm currently looking into flyback transformers as a source.

You can open a economic light bulb and take out the circuit ant power your flyback with the circuit, then it makes small arcs but it smells ozone and make a hissing sound but I don't know if flyback could die using this because it is a stil a short-circui tin the primary
