thank you back- please check out the girl I video taped in union square. she's 21 and does Youkali in an english translation. I think you'll appreciate it as I did.
This song is mezmerizing and - and this arrangement here proves it does not even need a voice. It is a reflection of our soul. I video taped a young girl singing on the subway in NYC I never knew the words- and didn't need to - but when I heard them it just ripped me apart. I love the composer. I will post the girl in another response
Wow, I love this piece. Just yesterday I thought, hmmmm I wonder if there's a guitar arrangment out there that I can learn, or better, maybe I can arrange it. Then today, I found this.....Damn.
Having sung this song many times, I am most impressed with the balance you struck between being faithful to the original and interpretation. As a former guitarist, I cannot even begin to imagine the work that went into this arrangement. Have you considered publishing it? It would be a worthy contribution to the repertoire, and is so well suited to the instrument. Have you done any other recordings of it?
well, that's what i was trying to do anyhow. not sure it's completely successful with some of those awkward parts. I never rerecorded this anywhere. In fact, i've completely forgotten how to play it by now!
I'm so glad I happened on this one. Kurt would enjoy your arrangement - so do I! I'm eager to learn it. This isn't the first video I've seen of your fine performances - 'Cry Me A River' is real nice too. And thanks for all the Beatles tunes - check out my 'Blackbird'. More Weill please!
Maybe you could post an mp3, so people could learn it from that? I have this guitar trainer thing that slows down and loops passages. Can't do it with a youtube clip, though.
there are ways to extract an mp3 out of youtube audio. not sure how to do it myself. but i know it can be done. google for "mp3 save youtube audio". there's probably freeware. then import into audacity and "change tempo". woo hoo!
Hearing this as a beautiful guitar solo is very interesting. I've ordered the big Kurt Weill books and this is in vol. 2. Probably just piano and voice, and I'll try to figure out guitar from there. One of the fascinations of his music for me is that it is often very smooth and beautiful but with rather harsh and pessimistic lyrics by Brecht and others. The message of this song is an example in its way. Anyway, thanks for the guitar rendition.
thanks. yes, the words here are quite heart-wrenching. Some other Weill favorites are "Berlin im Licht-Song", "Der Abschiedsbreif", "Es regnet" and "Je Ne T'Aime Pas" and ofcourse all of the better known things (3 penny, Alabama song, Surabaya Johnny). thank you for watching.
Still, a very nice job! I have a recorded version with a string quartet. You played most of the parts with 1/4 the hands. One of my favorite songs. Thanks for sharing.
Very beautiful! I really enjoy the way you change from Beatles to bossa to tango and so on... And thanks for the hint on Teresa Stratas video, also excellent.
Somehow you manage to make the good vibes come across. I wish more people including myself could only do the same. It would be a different world if only we all could.
Like all of your videos that was great. Is the Guitar the only instrument you play? How old were you when you were first introduced to it? Who are your influences? Is this how you make a living? What are your other hobbies?
Amazing! Beautiful melody, and I am amazed at how complex some of the fingerings are to keep the bass going. Above all else it's smooth and musical. Well done!
yeah, that bass gets pretty hairy at points! In fact, i had parts of it down a little smoother than in this version, but this was the best 'overall' take, so there it sits. Thanks!
Wonderful!!! I am in awe of the time it must take you to get this impressive repertoire down to memory. I seldom see you look at sheet music ( with the understandable exception of the classical guitar pieces). How do you do it?
thanks! I took the piano & vocal score out of the library and brushed up my ability to read the bass clef (which i'm none too good at). Then in conjunction with a recording i learned it by ear..with reference to the score to add notes or correct harmonies. It's not a perfect arrangement, but it's something to work with.
Youtube's messaging system is seriously messed. Anyhow do a search for "stratas youkali" to see a really nice clip of this song sung in french with english subtitles. really great.
