  • Man, Donners version was truly ultimate, even when I saw the original pt ll in the theaters when I was 8 years of age, there was so much garbage in the film (even though it was a real great film) Just because of BS conflict with Brando?? Too bad we cant go back into time,, but nevertheless I own the Donner version and can watch it all day long, its just pehenominal!!

  • I think a more apt comparison is that Donner was like the Burton of his time. Both these directors created entirely original and superb visions of the two best loved superheroes out of nothing. It's almost hard to imagine the Superman and Batman that we see today had it not been for directors like these two who literally invented wondrous cinematic versions of the characters and set the bar of the cinematic look of the characters ever since.

  • 3:23: Is Donner showing his finger to us? lol

  • A lot of trouble must've went with all this.

  • I LOVE the Richard Donner Cut! Thanks for posting this!

  • Donner could make a comic book out of this to show the 'rest' of his vision on this.

  • Richard MoLester suck balls and dicks.

  • Boy, Dicky had A good eye.

  • Cracked could put it better : Donner was like the Nolan of his time, and Lester like Fucking Schumacher. With flying icecream and rollerscaters.

  • Boy, people: imagine how touched and happy Donner must've felt when - after a generation of a time - he finally get to see his version of Superman II. To me, he is one of the top-5 directors in Hollywood.

And you, Lester: travel to Hawaii, and make a TV-comedy of the way Warner Brothers is handleing his comicbook-ikons! Those pitskunks!

  • @qwuezalothus I couldn't agree more. I will never forget sitting at the cinema as a kid, watching Lester's cut and thinking, 'Why in the world would Superman allow himself to trip and end up with his hand in the fireplace?' I always felt that was ridiculous. I can't believe I only found out by accident that Donner's version is available on DVD. I guess I'd given up hope in that department. So I can't wait to see it. Lester screwed up Superman, that's for sure.

  • "We didn't get Brando...for financial reasons."

...Brando, you geedy asshole; it's a movie that makes people feel happy and allows them to forget about their miserable lives for two hours. Wash the sand out of your vagina and do the fucking movie.

  • @jimbrown257 He had to make a living, like the rest of us.

  • Man, I remember watching the original Superman II right after being blown away by the first film as a kid. Even at that age, I knew it sucked. I was sooooo pissed off. It was like "what the hell happened?!"

Now, thanks to this cut of the film, combined with how superb Superman Returns was (to make up for how shitty III and IV were), a small part of my childhood is redeemed. Thank you Dick.

  • When he yells, You will bow down before me!" Is he saying, "Both you and your ass?"

  • @Jacklgf

    jejeje no.

He's saying "Both you and your heirs"

  • @danrod86 You're right, I checked the subtitles.

  • this is the best slap in the face vengeance, in movie history, at a stupid man in the production company. On of the spoiled brat control freak producers gets mad and fires the talented director (Donner) only to replace him with a no vision kiss-ass (Lester) just so the producer can get the movie made his way. Lester ruined the movie. But years later, Donner goes back in and fixes it and makes it great.

  • @noirkitten yes superman II was superior and i love the music

  • i love this movie!

  • Saw the Donner cut in the cinema last night as part of the Glasgow Film Festival. It was the first time I'd seen this version and I was blown away. Dick Donner's cut was a much better film

  • @noirkitten donner is better by a million miles . i love lester version but always knew something had happened

  • I like Donner's cut, but I think that Lester version is actually better. I fell in love with the superman movies around the age of 5 or 6 when superman 4 use to come on HBO. Superman 2 was always my favorite and I think that my younger self would have like the lester version more maybe just because of the opening action scene in Paris where superman saves Louis. Donner's version really had no action until Zod came to town and as a kid I wanted action and didnt really care about a love story.

  • Donner can have a comic book of this to show us the rest of his vision.

  • RIP tom mankiewicz

  • 0 dislikes? I can fix that. BOOM!

  • @Solar2

    dick!

  • @Solar2 nice

  • @Solar2 troll

  • The 'true' version.

  • the original theaticral version was fine

  • the original theaticral version was fine

  • I am going to have to see this film. When Superman II came out, it seemed like it was lacking something (and I don't mean in the kind of lame ways sequels do sometimes). Something about it didn't measure up. I was too young to pay attention to, or much less know about, the Donner/Lester controversy.

  • Dick we love you. All us Superman fans love you. The respect and dignity you gave Superman will never ever be forgotten

  • richard donner should have been given free rein on this, his work is second to none, and makes one of the greatest films ever even better ....... seen it a thousand times but watching this cut ill watch it a thousand more !!

  • Great director...I remember reading a review of Superman and how the actors were a bunch of cardboard characters. Also the Superman was cut shortly after it came out. My brother and I both remember the beginning....seems like no one else on earth does however. I did talk with a co-worker who has an excellent memory and he also remember the parts cut out at the beginning. I think they did it to shorten the film. I loved the full version that first came out. ...just great.

  • I liked Richard Donner's cut....for the most part. I actually feel that Richard Lester's ending with Clark and Lois at the Daily Planet had A LOT more of an emotional impact than simply redoing the ending from Part 1. If they decided to retain Lester's ending, it would have been perfect, IMO.

  • Who else thinks superman 3 was a horrible movie.. I can't believe Reeve went through with it..richard prior with superman..cmon..what's the deal with all the richards..

  • @THEJEDEYEMASTER Superman III should have never been made. c. reeve didn't want to do it in the first place. r. lester talked him into it. i guess reeve did it for the money. the salkinds & lester were to blame. completely ruined the character. i believe this was the worst picture out of all the superman tv shows, cartoons, etc.****

  • @d4seasons

Reeve signed on in 1981 i think so maybe it was partly money. I can't blame him he had to know this was his biggest role and he needed to get paid. But Lester did enough good work on 2 to likely make Reeve think 3 would have been good. Sadly 3 stunk..

  • @dbreiden83080 Lester Screwed up the adventure.

  • this is boring as fuck

if pt 2 isnt better I am going to make waffles

  • Richard Donner still came out on top. After Superman, came Ladyhawke, The Goonies, the Lethal Weapon movies. And what of the Salkinds, they went belly up after Superman's 3 and 4. Fuck the Salkinds and Richard Lester sayeth Richard Donner.

  • @josymon I agree. But the Salkinds didn't produce Superman 4 , that's why Gene Hackman is in it.

  • God Bless Richard Donner!

  • Richard Donner is the best ! Screw the producers who fired him!

  • @kobretti888 if r. donner had done all the Superman moves it would have been megahits like star wars, indiana jones, etc.****

  • richard donner class act.... the theme still gives me goosebumps

  • RIP Christopher Reeve. This Donner cut was the proper way for us to remember you.

  • I just watched (discovered) the Richard Donner cut of superman 2. Totally awesome. That cut was way kinder to Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder. Their careers would have been different had Richard Donner been left to do his work.

That was refreshing watching Richard Donner's cut. Good Job and many thanks to Richard Donner.

  • @caecilius192 you are so correct. it's a darn shame that r. donner was fired. i blame the producers & lester. the character was ruined. the whole saga was ruined. if donner was to continue the whole superman project , it would of been a smash. he & his assistant knew the storyline & had plans for future sequels. cannot turn back time. the sad part is brando, reeve, & d. reeve aren't around to see this donner cut. it was the original intended & look what happened.****

  • Where can I watch donner cut? anyone for free online

  • @jason75 you can purchase it on regular or blu-ray DVD. @ times i see the regular DVD on sale for $ 5.99. enjoy.****

  • superman 2 is the closest well ever get to Dragonball Z like action in a holywood movie, and its from the 1980s

  • @Ultizer

What the hell are u talking about?

  • @Ultizer

    Dragonball Z?? What? WTF?

  • is it possible to get this movie DVD in europe?

  • @Cloudjumper you can order the SUPERMAN ANTHOLOGY Blu-ray DVD box set coming soon. try amazon.uk.

  • The cut was a much darker movie imo though it is essentially the same story.

  • this is it eiffelf tower pish

  • Amazing what creative differences will do-cheating audiences out of seeing this on the big screen-i have no desire to watch the Lester hybrid version, but really love this Donner cut

  • We have the Super-Hero Film Genre because of one man: Richard Donner.

  • Regardless of the general consensus that the Donner cut is better, it must be noted one of the key intentions of the Lester cut was to keep the audience wanting more, but depriving them of physically seeing more, that back in that era of film was typically the norm and especially having so many shots, variations of specific shots and sequences to work with, then deciding on when and how they will be implemented, was a monumental task, as Superman could be used in virtually limitless scenarios.

  • Uhhhhh isn't Superman II like way better than Superman 1

  • Compare the two (the first one and the Lester cut) back-to-back and see the monumental difference

  • I remember that I've read somewhere that Richard Donner directed 80% of Superman II. After seen the Donner Cut I must say that The Donner Cut is way better than the Lester version. Even if some scenes has been used from the Screen Tests or that the ending was not suppose to be as predicted.

  • Yeah, Richard Donner didn't want to re-use the "turning the world backwards" ending from Superman I, but he never got around to shooting the ending he wanted, so re-using the ending was an unfortunate necessity for continuity's sake.

  • Die, Richard Lester

    He forgot your name

    HA!!!!!

  • @mellowlanternquartet I hate Richard Lester for his cut of Superman 2, but he did a great job on Help and A Hard Day's Night

  • @szumwalt r. lester was a comical director. yes, those beatle films were fun. lester was wrong for superman & look what happened to II & III.

  • @mellowlanternquartet Be careful what you say.

I mean didn't you see In the Line of Fire?

  • @mellowlanternquartet r. lester & the salkinds ruined everything. r. donner was the man for the project. he knew his art inside & out. looking @ the donner cut was beautiful. all that hard work & lifetime deserves to be shown to the public. just glad all the film was stored & kept safe. just a very sad shame that m. brando, & c & d. reeve aren't around to see all of this. ****

  • @mellowlanternquartet Don't Lose Your Head by INX.

  • so goood!!!!!! so good!!!!!!!!!
