And the two sides of the midfield you can push up two backs. The Brazilians pushed up Roberto Carlos and Cafu to the two sides of the midfield. But if the enemy's defence can play through this midfield they have two face with 3 defenders. In 2002 the Brazlians offence was awesomme: Rivaldo and Ronalo and Ronaldinho played as a SS behind them. 1986: same story : Valdano and Burruchaga and behind them Diego Maradona. Everybody knows what was the result.
I love the 3-5-2 formation the defence and the offence is in balance.
This formation was very successful on th world cups. For example Argentina 86, Brazil 2002. I think there is no weakpoint. Between the two striker you can employ a second striker or Trequartista in the classic language. But the midfield is the best! You can use two defensive midfielders. But it works awesome if your midfielders are creative. For example Yaya Toure,Ever Banega etc.
@Szuperpocok 3-5-2 is great and the midfield will own the match, but and there is a but ;) You are very weak against teams that doubles up on the flanks.
its all about the players capabilities in any formation, barca can play either way, the spanish are bred young to suit all tactical formations, just look when world cup starts, so are the south americans, this is why our beloved england just cant get near the jules remit
@chingizd The reason Barcelona is successful with that formation is because it fits the style of their players. I've seen teams trying to play 4-3-3 and failing miserably. This is really more an art than a science, and I personally don't see any modern formation as a superior way of playing per se. I would say though that any formation with more than 4 defenders is inferior and obsolete, cause it means renouncing to attack.
4-4-2 is the best formation anothe rgood one is a very well organized 4-2-4 i know it sounds crzy but if you make your center defenders a push up a lil more it could work just fine but you also have to keep in mind wat formations ur rivals using
nice vid the thinking mans game.... man fifa 09 really does a great job simulating all of this... and for us football wizards you can completely build your very own formation far beyond basic placement of the players (work rate, runs, etc.) also u can build your own tactics (defensive width, agression, pressure; crossing settings, build up speed, etc.) take a look!
And personally I prefer a 5-3-2 formation, you'll have your defence pretty organized and also have the ability to go forward with passes, instead of having the goalie kick the ball.
I agree that you will be able to build it up out of the back more efficiently but once your 2 outside defenders have pushed up to a 3-5-2 the counter attack becomes very dangerous if the other team is efficient. Those two outside defenders have to have a very high work rate if that formation is to work offensively and defensively.
yeah well its true, the outside defenders will definitely need great stamina to be running the field back and forth, and you're right eventually the formation can become a 3-5-2 when you're attacking, so lots of stamina will be required.
we play the 3-5-2 which is pretty similar, it do take alot of running for the sidemidfielders (they need to be back defending when the back three push over to the side the ball is in). But we almost always come up with a massive posession advantage, cause we rule the middle of the field. And since our goalie and defenders are all strong in the air the wing disadvantage doesnt hurt that much.
formation is where to go when the ball is dead e.g. free kicks.then its about anticipating from there, the formation should help anticipate direction of attack, then counter attack, you will have better field position than the opposition as their attack was predictable, not going to tell my formation as then you wud have an advantage,in my view there is on 1 formation because def helps you counter and att brings it into an area easy to defend, if you change formation you lose this balance
4-5-1 and 4-3-3 is better. keep the back four the same as 4-4-2 but have an extra holding midfielder just infront of the midfield. the wide players (when in the team is in possesion) push on to create a 4-3-3 situation making it harder for the defence of the opposition. there should always be a spare man at the back when marking. if the opponent is playing 2 upfront, leave 3 back to mark and push the defender into midfield (3-4-3) making it harder for the opposision to get back from your attack
Its impossible to call one formation better than another. It all depends on the situations that your team is in. Against a 4-4-2 with the back playing a sweeper-stopper (mostly seen in younger ages), it is better to play a 4-3-3 due to the midfield being even (instead of in a 4-4-2) because the attacking player would mark the stopper and then it would be 2v2 in the middle. But against a 3-4-3, counter attacks become extremely deadly. (hard to explain with only 30 characters left...)

@Szuperpocok Burruchaga has never been an striker. He even played behing Maradona...

Yes but on thought to the 86 WC. where Burruchaga was a striker with Valdano.
Maradona played a second striker behind them.

how about a 4-2-3-1?
It is a great formation if the team has the discipline to play it well and stay in their positions.

I prefer 4-4-2, when you attack you have a lot of offensive players and when you defend you can make a good pressure to all parts of the field.
If your team has very good attacking players you can go 4-3-3 like barcelona which has messi, etoo and henry as the 3 attackers.
A 4-3-3 can pwn you very fast if you dont take care.
