  • GAH! I never noticed I was saying weruld!!!!

  • that is good teaching, I can't say world and street correctly, once, I graduate in UK , and say it with a british accent in a travel shop -- and ask for "ROUND-THE-WORLD" air ticket, then the shop keeper make fun out of me and mock me

  • @tvbNEWSreporter you're so lucky for buying a RTW ticket.

  • omg i didn't know i was saying weruld all the time not world!!!

  • You are the best US accent teacher I have seen so far!

  • I teach English, although I'm Brazilian, but... I learned a different way to do it... such as to tell people to say "were old", but instead of giving a strong stress on the word "were" , I'd just tell them to pronounce it slightly and say "old" in a stronger way, like "wr old" , what you think of it, teacher ?

  • Hello , I'm from Saudi arabia , thanks miss Lisa , I really can now do it well !

  • I am an American and I've always been curious at how other cultures hear our accents. I actually thought that we didn't have accents, but that's pretty ignorant on my part. This video helped me see this at last! It's very interesting to hear what we actually do, and understand better why some people have trouble speaking it.

  • thanks that meant world to me

  • i say it like werld

  • it's funny how, when you look at the statistics, most of the likes are American (or Indian, which makes sense) not from other countries.

  • excellent. thank you. please up more videos teaching this difficult words in english. thank you.

  • Hello, I`m a none native speaker, I live in the UK, but I`ve just realized that, the American accent suits me much better than the British.

I`d love to gain a nice American accent. Thank your for these videos, these help a lot, you`re a great teacher, I wish I was in your class, I think after a while I`d sound like a proper American.

  • I'll get you started... Americans hardly ever say "proper".

  • @BieberWONDERFUL

I'm from america and i'm in French 1. French is hard to learn, but i'm guessing our accent is hard also.

    Je vais aller a France.

  • very smart and very beautiful teacher )))))

  • you're a super super great teacher but i speak British :(((((, British accent fits me better, i don't know if this can apply for British accent

  • i'm from philippines and i'm currently residing here in america. i am really bothered on my accent.. sometimes it feels awful whenever i talk to americans. but i do love americans! they're very understanding and hospitable. and they don't care about my accent. not to mention this.. they don't loathe me. thank you very much for this tutorial! i'm pretty sure that i will get along with my friends in this american accent!

  • @itsaleeeeexis You don't need to speak in an american accent. It's weird when people who naturally don't have american accents to speak in that manner.

  • Amazingly helpful! Thanks

  • I thought I was never goona be able to say that word! Thank u very much!

  • I can;t wait to share this with my Chinese students! Thank you!

  • GREAT TEACHER !!! THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • Hi Lisa,

Thank you very much for your help. I got your book and it did help me a lot! Could you please make a video explaining how to pronounce the word "forward"? Every time I try to pronounce it I feel like I try to break my tongue... Thanks in advance!

  • @Deborah8678 I'm American, I pronounce forward like "for-wrd", removing the vowel like she did in her video, and pronouncing the "wr" the same way as well.

  • nice ity helps me a lot thanks

  • i'm from the czech republic. my mom have been learning me english since i was 2. we learn british english at school but i use to watch movies and stuff in american english. i also like pitbull -the rapper, who speaks with a spanish accent. so my accent is kinda mixed up with all of these but its probably a good think as well because i can speak in all three ways if i try LOL

  • you're AMAZING

  • What is the pronunciation of 'poor' and 'pour' ? Both words trick me a lot and I think they may trick many people who have English as a second language as well. Brazilian here! :P

    Thank you teacher! ;-)

  • @MrNasc poor is more like poo -r whereas pour is more like po-r

  • @MrNasc -- An American here! They do essentially sound the same, (they're called homophones, they sound the same, but have different meanings. Tricky little devils!) but when you use the word 'pour' in a sentence, it tends to be slightly elongated and have emphasis because of the 'ou' spelling. (ex. "Will you POUR the milk?") Where as 'poor' is shortened and clipped. You don't stop to emphasize it like 'pour'. "Oh, those poor people!" vs. "Will you POUR the milk?" I hope that helped a little? :)

  • just say globe

  • @sprucepantherkmt They don't always have the same meaning. Typically when people say world they literally mean the earth, but when they say globe they mean a round material model of the earth.

  • Very helpful, I am going for an audition in summer for a play and I have to sing a song, tell a joke and speak in an american accent, when I read that I panicked. I got the hang of it now that I have watched your videos, I am going to subscribe for more videos

  • Thank you very much! :)

  • wr /^e/ ld. helpful. thanks.

  • i ruld around the street! ^^

  • Hi Lisa, I have a problem to pronounce the "br" and "dr", "fr" like break bread, drink, drive, drug, fruit, ect. Hope you can help me. By the way, my pronunciation get to improve when I watched your video. Thank you for your nice job.

  • woo that was difficult, but i managed it :D! thank you

  • How, I have heard some good teachers, but, you ar the best. Thanks a lot

  • but the British pronounce the "o" right?

    nonetheless you are awesome !

  • We rolled.

  • Hi Lisa, How are you doing? You always do a good job. I like the way when you teach us English. You are a wonderful person. Will you please teach us all kind of Punctuation? And I would like to know when we use a latter ( A ). Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. You have a good day.

  • thanks for your video.your voice's really clear and nice to listen to.Can you more videos like this kind?

  • thank you i think i got it :D

  • I'm not a native speaker of English and this video was very helpful. When I was practising pronunciation, my dad came into my room and was looking at me with WTF Face:-) I don't know if it's a problem to the rest of non native speakers of English, but for me it's pretty hard to pronounce the word "literally". To pronounce this word correctly I have to say it slowly, which sounds weird. Great series of videos. You're an amazing teacher!

  • Understandable explenation and generally great series of videos! I'm not a native speaker of English and when I was practising, my dad came into my room and he was looking at my with WTF face:-)

  • Thank you so much !!! I actually figured it out with a "u' tip !!!

  • I understand every word she says but I have a problem is that when I am watching movies, those americans speak very fast but they are able to understand each other. I have to think awhile to know what they are saying. The problem isnt with my english standard. Can anyone tell me the problem?

  • @Kenneth9725 you're not used to this accent so its just gonna take u a little before u get the hang of it.

  • @Kenneth9725 well all I have to say is that you have to get used to it. You can know a language very well, but hearing it is totally different. People don't speak slowly so they can pronounce every little detail. You just have to get use to the pace of speaking.

  • world - We're old.

  • @Shiroitora55 haha

  • My god, not at all!

Much more like: "were old", not "we're old". Watch out.

  • awesome. I love your style of teaching accents.

    Wishing to see more vids...

  • you are a very nice teacher, i knew already how to say RLD in english exactly but i didn't know "wor" was without the "o" sound and that's a really wonderfull advice for me, now i looks more like an american when i speak and i am not far to be same, thank you very much!

  • ITS REALLY HARD FOR A JAPANESE!!!! tounge literally is twisting when trying this :( :(

  • thank you for this !

  • Huh. I usually pronounce it as one syllable, with the "orl" part being pronounced as "earl."

lol I guess, being from West Virginia, I can't expect to have a 100% midwestern accent.

  • @xCalyptrax yeah, it IS 1 syllable.

  • wow, I just realized that there are things I need to work at that I didn't even know were wrong. These lessons are great, thank you!

  • She is really Good @ teaching!!!

  • oh my tongue~! lol thank you very much ;)

  • Perfect! I've just learned how to say it propely and now It sound perfect! I've always had some problems with this one (i'm polish so my language is a bit harsh in pronounciation) I would like to have a teacher like you!

  • wow! you 're a great teacher, or what?

  • so, is there a difference between whirled and world??

  • @pimpthatcheerio As a American...yes whirled is pronounced like werlld and world is pronounced like wererolled.

  • just say pronounce the word world werld thats how it said

  • Wow. She's a GREAT TEACHER ! Thanks !!

  • When I say "world" it always sounds like "whirled".

  • i am american, but i still think this is interesting because some of it i would never think about. you're a great teacher! :)

  • thank u so much!

  • Wow i never understood why people from other countries hated the American accent so much, we slaughtered the english language lmao!!!

  • @jericco Na we mayde eh bedder!

  • you are a good teacher

  • Mirror and order are the ones that i can say

    Thank you so much

  • i am brazilian and i have a super difficult time saying some words and people make fun of me can you give me some instructions please???? ty ty ty ;)

  • I could never pronounce the word 'world' right, if I only I thought of mixing 'world' with the Dutch word for it: 'wereld', which also contains a schwa sound after the r. Only the schwa seems a bit less obvious to me in AE. I feel kinda stupid now, for not thinking of it sooner, haha!

    Thanks!

  • I like Lisa,,she is really so attractive

i was not concentrating in the lesson ,,i was watching her,,she is really cute

  • So you mean that world and wirld or werld would be pronounced the same way?

  • thanks lisa ^^

  • thank u very much

  • This is very awesome tichniques. I usually tried to sound like American and said "WOOORLD", now I understand it is rather pronounced as "wrld"

  • lol, she is that good. I'm sold. Ordering the DVD now.

  • Thank you.

  • After 2 months exercicing (during shower, walking, going to sleep), first time in my life I said 'world' correctly. Thanks from Poland :)

  • The reason most people never improve their accent is because they are lazy and don't want to lose their identity as a foreigner

  • I love how she uses the whiteboard the old fashioned way. It is a great teaching tool and fewer and fewer professors are using them

  • Hi thank you so much for this lesson I have just bought the entire 4 dvd set from you.

I lived in USA for so long but i still sound like Steve Irwin lol. I think I should try to sound American. I could put on American accent and still sound American but i never knew about the rules from your video.

Thanks for the lesson and i have just bought your dvds. Is there a download link entire dvd? I never got the link, only an email saying it will be sent to me at my Australian address.

    April xoxox

  • Hi Lisa , I'd is fentastic and superb. thanks a lot.

  • Cards and Cars's difference

Months' ths sound are difficult.I bought Mastering the American Accent book.Word by word practice I feel ok but when it comes to longer sentece I sometimes feel it's like a tongue twisters.

  • @ramencurry are you caucasian? or asian? most asians struggles.

  • I heard a lot of time 'worry' pronounced with open O from native speakers in TV shows and movies. So who is right then?

By the way, the most difficult word to pronounce for me is 'ask+s+the'. 'He asks+the...' 'She asks+the...' It is almost impossible to pronounce to me.

  • I say "world" like "whirled".. Haha.. But I say a ton of words "weird"..

  • @MsChristinaMarie87 me too when i pretend to be american.

I am an Aussie living in USA for the past 20 years but i still have a strong Aussie Accent like Olivia Newton John.

  • Haha, I've been told I pronounce words "weird" even though American English is my first language. I was thinking about how I pronounce "world" before I heard it.. I pronounce it like "whirled".. Hahaha,

  • Many thanks , its the first time I get it really well, thanks Lisa . I wish having a teacher like you.

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • Wow thanks a lot!

  • man, i'm american and i say it as "weld" in a funny british accent...

saying work as "wark"??? .... i'm sorry tahts funny :D

  • very good your courses,Lisa

  • Mss. Lisa You are great teacher!!!!

  • @guitarfreakzzz015 it's pronounced like sore and add a d sound at the end.

  • Asians cannt pronounce words with the letter "r"....true story....the lady that does my nails cant say "world" or"water"

  • @The3rdHiltonSister asians have like a rolling r, so instead of arghhh it's aerl

  • Thank you for this wonderful video, but i was wondering how to pronounce the word "sword"? How should it sound like? Thank you.

  • wuruld!!!! jejejeje these are awesome videos!!!

  • Outstanding class. Really helpful, that's exactly what needed.

  • When looking at the whiteboard she was writing on it looked like a young child's attempt at spelling, but in fact she's just explaining the pronounciation of words in American accent. No offense intended.By that,I thank you very much as I am truly learning from your videos and I can speak the American accent more fluently.

  • here's the trick just try not to say the word as it is, just say "WeRLD" one short syllable, xxRebecca25xx is quite right about this!

that would do the trick as well.

    it's just WERLD!

  • This is really a difficult word, but now I know how to pronounce it properly. THX for the tip. "WROLLED" Great!

  • Good lesson thanx...

  • omg i don't like much american accent, i guess british is correctly and is easier to understand:) american president is an asshole because he does anything for United States!>>George bush did more of america than obama!

  • but we say sword not like this=) s''wor''d

  • iam french and i think you are able to learn anglish with your accent at the french people than begin to learn englisgh i have understand everything your accent good teecher realy good accent

  • dont forget that ''world'' is one syllable(sp?) so it'd be better if you tried it as "wirl'd". this will make it flow better

  • I am amazed why we understand, even we know where the mistake is but cannot pronounce correctly while speaking. lol

  • cant anyone who uses this tell me what the point in learning another accent foreign accents arent that hard to understand?

  • I know English since I was 4 (20 now) and I speak it pretty well but I don't have any accent and "world" and "girl" have always been a problem for me. Thank you for the vid!

  • im portuguse and in my view that's very kind of u doing so i apreciate

  • this is awesome

  • great, thanks alot

  • I bet if I can teach foreign students to speak American, I'd be HELLA rich !

  • No, you wouldn't be 'hella' rich, you'd just be another EFL accent reduction trainer. Depending on where you live, you'd probably make enough to be "middle class-ish", but nowhere near Carlos Slim or Bill Gates.

  • @Armando2012102 im sure he was just joking....

  • @macibax: Naw, people really do believe that. But a decent accent can be acquired. I mean, look at Hollywood actors: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, etc. They speak English well enough that we don't get distracted by the occasional slip of the tongue.

  • it's magic thanks for your help and being passion.

  • thank you so much great video

  • u solve my problem thx mam

  • Owesome!

  • i like your lesson.....i now know hehehhh

  • You are amazing! Thank you so much!

  • As an American, I think the word "world" as pronounced might better be spelled like: "weruld". The "wer" part is pronounced like the verb "were" and add "uld".

  • that's how i would explain it to someone.

  • @jaegerhund U RIGHT MAN ! I GOT IT RIGHT IN 3 SEDONDS '' WERULD'' , THE 5 MINUTES VIDEO DIDN'T DO THE JOB :D
