They were wealthy, but at least they were socially conscious and were not viewed friendly by high society standards at the time for their progressive views. They are not like today's socially irresponsible wealthy with their Reaganite wet dreams.

Yes he was. His ego was too huge for companionship. Mental illnesses including, he was immensely rude. In this scene, it shows his insecurity with being around a family, something he never really had, and rather try to make himself comfortable, he lashed out.
