Lot going on here. It gets confusing because the lyrics alternate between a narrator and the protagonist. Essentially, it's an old woman in a nursing home overcome with loneliness reflecting on the time she was raped at 15 and comparing - favorably it would seem - the horrific moment with her current wretched and loneley station in life. As awful as rape is at least she was being touched by someone. Of course that argument crumbles and implodes on itself just as the song does.
I always assumed this tune was about a girl getting raped and now in an institution for trauma. "They entered into me." "My skirt over my head." "I was so much older when I crawled out..". Maybe?
I was listening to the song and think about it since yesterday (I'm so in love with it).
I guess the man is repeating always and always this sentence because he's like a crazy man in a psychiatric hospital turning around and saying always and always the same words.
Anyway, I don't get the ""just how long you gonna be my baby"", maybe it's very simple but I don't understand it clearly.
@MademoisellleF : I think the girl has been murdered..and the lover gone insane because of it. Maybe he's guilty maybe he's not, he feels the guiltiness anyway.
@MademoisellleF This song is about a 15 year old girl who gets raped and becomes pregnant. The line "just how long you gonna be my baby" refers to the fact that she's going to have to give the baby up.
I instantly noticed this song while playing the album. Pure Grinderman brilliance. First half of the song involves Nick's poetry while the second half brings forward some great musicianship from the band members. Imagine seeing the band play this song live. It would be one amazing ride!!!
@grinderman77 have done at Primavera Sound best live show of my life!. IT was fucking incredible. The guitars came out screaming. raw energy. We can just thank and love Nick Cave and grinderman for the awesome music!
Hey man, hate to break it to you Mavin didn't invent the bongo...I think you have stumbled upon the wrong page. If your looking for some easy listening. Try the search bar at the top dude...
that pounding bass and guitar wankery from half way through is utterly astounding. First time i heard this song, i wasn't really taking it in that much, but my ears well and truly perked up when that kicked in.
2nd song i heard from grinderman 2.Like this one better than heathen child. So curious how the whole cd sounds.gonna buy it tommorow :) grtz coen netherlands
Pure brilliance - on so many levels. One of the most amazing songs I have heard in a long time. Most of the reviews for Grinderman 2 seem to mention this song and now I understand why.
The brilliance of Grinderman continues to illuminate my thoughts....my senses...my depths....and this song becomes a star in the brilliant constellation created by Grinderman....

I'm crazy about this song, once again Nick Cave and his band is blowing my mind !
Please can you help me understand a little the song, because english is not my first language.
It seems to talk about a man in a psychiatric hospital, something like that ?
But I don't understand the line " Just how long you gonna be my baby", it's simple but a little weird to understand.
Is the "baby" the drug's hospital or something ?
Thanks to all the answers if there's any ! ;-)

Oh Brilliant, I never though about that.
I was thinking about a man who's been in a psychiatric hospital since he was fifteen, the guns can be some needles.
But maybe he's there because of a murder yes, it's definitly something Nick Cave would write.
Anyway I truly madly f..cking love that song, I would kill to be able to sing it and play the guitar or the bass line.
