yes they do seem to avoid rational arguments in response to rational arguments. I can relate though. Years ago i responded that way to scientists and muslems. One needs to be educated enough in your opponants view so that a retort takes the form of reason and not simply an end of discussion.

I think the point Jay is making is that some people are better at debate than others. If someone is well-versed in debate tactics, they will do better, even if their overall case is not as good. My personal opinion is that written debate (such as we do here) is the better option, as it gives people more time to think through things. It is far too difficult to discuss complex topics constructively in an hour-long oral debate.
