This is such a joyous sounding song, but I have to change the lyrics in my mind to "now that I can feel my God is watching over me", because that is where all my joy comes from. And freedom isn't when nothing is challenging you - that's awful. Challenge is where we grow.

I interpret it as God has already given him what he needs to meet any challenge. God lets me fall, so I grow wings and fly. When you let me die, my spirit's free. If you believe in God in this way, you don't need him watching over you. God's job is done and it's up to us to use what gifts we've been given. Life's challenges simplify when you accept that you have all you need. And that this is not the end.
