To every 1 saying NZ shouldn't have sent this team over - Fisrt thing the South African Rugby Union had nothing to do with the Goverment policies at the time. Second, the NZ government banned the All Blacks from going, hence the change of name to cavaliers. Rugby is a sport and has nothing to do with politics. GET OVER IT.
South afrika were not derserving of such a tour bec ause of the way they were. I didn't bluy give a hoot about them going. Now that SA have got rid fo its shamefull past we can enjoy the rugby between two unbiased nations.
this is the saddest and most tragic period in NZ sporting history and sure damaged our reutation as a great peaceful country. In doind so says toi the rest of the world that we support apartheid and in the belief that countires should be govern this way. I just hope that if there was any positve from this , it woulod be that nz played a tiny part in ending apatheid
I don't think they were supported by NZ rugby. I remember some of them suspended for partaking in this tour. Still, we enjoyed it in SA and were very grateful to the Cavaliers who played some brilliant rugby.
It doesn't bloody matter who played in the 1987 final. Few teams play the RWC final with the squad that lead up to the WC. BUT I maintain that this Bok team was (a) quite possibly the best Bok of all time, and (b) one of the best rugby teams of all time - entertaining, talented, tough, and with a flair for running that was unmatched in their day.
The Cavaliers slunk of to SA in 1986; NZ rugby took about 10 years to recover properly. They were never regarded as a proper test side by New Zealanders. It was a shameful back door exercise, and I am surprised that the SA commentators on this link think so much of the series, even though I understand how grateful they were. The games were never even shown on NZ television. It divided rugby supporters in New Zealand far more than the divisive 1981 tour, and damaged rugby in NZ.
I fucken love those Kiwis for opting to play against us when everybody decided to boycott, like a bunch of cunts, you got to give it to the Kiwis...they love the rugby just as much as we do and they wanted to play against the BEST.. God Bless the Kiwis

I remember this series, not many countries could field 2 teams on the same day playing 2 different countries (NZ Cavaliers Vs Springbox , All Blacks Vs Wallabies) and WIN!! how awesome is kiwi rugby. I still have the Cavalier book that came out
@churdude My pal, I would feel privelaged if you could scan those pages and send them to me, what a great piece of rugby history you have there in your hands
I heard a majority of the Cavaliers team became the 1987 World Cup Rugby winning team.... they really got a lesson from the worlds best team at the time. SA Springboks.....
@fifita78 - 1985 all black team - knight, ashworth, dalton, haden, whetton, shaw, mexted, hobbs, loveridge, fox, taylor, pokere, kirwan, green, deans. The majority of these players were the 1986 no.1 test team against the Cavaliers, though 1st-5 was between fox and smith and kirwan did not go. 1987 team - drake, fitzpatrick, macdowell, pierce, whetton, whetton, shelford, jones, kirk, fox, taylor, stanley, kirwan, green and gallaghar. Therefore don't know what you are talking about
I was born this year. I remember my mum protesting against this tour in Auckland and she was pregnant with me. How brave yet how stupid of the NZ rugby administrators.
Without political inteference The Boks would of been in serious contention for all the world cups with the exception of perhaps 2003. No wonder NZ has never really won the RWC the boks are still the best when it counts the most, even with all the AA quota's and kak!
@marcellin20a No, IF Nick Mallet had left the tema in tact ( with Gary Teichmann etc) its very probable they would of won the '99 RWC. Two in a row, a first for anyone! NZ can't even manage one since the Bok's have been allowed to play.
@RichardBaldock lol. The boks got thrashed 32-6 by australia in 99 and only could manage a 1 point win the the reverse game in south africa and they couldnt beat the allblacks that year. Pity excuses. Australia deserved it in 99.
@marcellin20a SA Beat NZ in the 3rd/4th place playoff at the RWC '99! No one mentioned Aus, but SA without Nick Mallets tampering would of been a much better opponent.... if not the winners :)
@RichardBaldock Yes Im taking about Australia taking it out in 99. Aus beat you in the semi finals fair and square. You guys were undefeated till the Australia beat you in the semi like they did in previous meets earlier in the year. You cant blame your coaches 'poor' selections on your inability in not winning the world cup. Again. Pity excuses.
@marcellin20a No excuses just the wrong team ,as you said the Springboks were undefeated up until then. This record run was established under a different regime, which if left to play at the RWC in '99 would of, in all eventuality won it. Aus had a good team there yes, but they were'nt good enough to beat the "other' bok team as they had proven earlier in the year.
@RichardBaldock lol. Typical of bok fans who keep making up pity excuses when they deny the fact another team was better than theirs. The Wallabies were the best team between 99-2001. You clearly didn't understand. Australia dominated the Boks 99 trinations. However the same team selected under the SAME REGIME were able to go through to the world cup semi finals but were beaten by the eventual winners.
@marcellin20a cont. ...Nick Mallet took over in 97 had a shit 97 season but went on to win the 98 trinations under the SAME regime. You see the selection regime did not affect their ability to compete. Its just a matter of other teams being better than the boks. Thats like saying Graham Henry stuffed up not selecting his 'best' 15 at the 2007 world cup despite the depth and NZ being clearly the best team from 05-07. Its was simply a case of not performing when it matters.
Danie Gerber...I love him to bits. Simply the best rugby player of the last century for me at least. I remeber sitting on Loftus and my dad and uncle being blue bull suporters but when ever Danie touched the ball they cheered him just as much. I saw him score a beauty against Ntvl where he just stepped the whole line and finnished with that trade mark arching his back :P 2 most exciting runners in rugby for me ever was Danie Gerber and Cristian Cullan.
This team against the All Black team that won the World Cup in '87 what a game that would have been!! This was potentially the best Bok team ever if only they could have played more often. Imagine Gerber in the Pro era. Bigger and with all his skills he would be unstoppable.
If Garth Wright had made that pass today, Naas would have had Richie McCaw and Dan Carter all over him. That's how this game has changed. Defenses have simply improved. But it's great to see the Boks run the ball like this...that's the heritage the Boks used to have. In the early 1900s the Boks were also known for their running.
great footage. No Forwards in the backlines means we can see some decent backline moved. Good old Frans Erasmus and Flip vd Merve, now those are props.
I enjoyed watching that. It's strange, the Springboks had better runners in the backs (Gerber especially), and played a more expansive, attractive style. And then 10 years later (1996) that it was the ABs with Lomu & Cullen that did the carving out wide. Everything moves in ebbs & flows...
You wont get this style of rugby anymore because they changed the rules. The rules cause the game to die. It turns into football now, just kick the ball.
I always respected the Kiwis for going against the grain in those times, their official stance was " Isolation would do more harm than good" in the end they had to give in.
Its funny how today, nobody in the world considers a sporting boycott of Zimababwe, for the same reasons...hahaha you got to love hypocrytes
o well, i understand that. It is just a pity for us that it is the only real test against real opposition that that amazing springbok team ever had. that is why we watch it. it is probably the best backline combination in any springbok team ever. so even though it leaves a bitter taste, we still watch it...

Most of these Cavaliers didn't play in the 1987 World Cup Final.
I'm just hearing the names: Reid, Mexted, Donald, Haden, Knight, Hobbs, Simpson, Crowley, Clamp, Loveridge, Shaw, Ashworth...
None of these guys played in the '87 final. Only Crowley from that list was in the '87 WC squad.
Essentially, they were a bunch of senior All Blacks getting a decent payday before they retired.
You South Africans are delusional by suggesting otherwise.
Great tries though. I like that Gerber.
