Why this film isn't held in the top of the Spielberg canon is a mystery. It is one of his most visually complex & expressive films: the white parachute blowing on the tower as Jamie says, "I surrender", the fabulously surreal images of the migration into stadium, the endless allusions to birds, the floating suitcase echoing the floating coffins, the resucitation scene with the clanking dog tags and the solar flare, & on an on. A true pity (or a blessing?) that it only has a cult following.
@cs40660 It's truly one of the best of Spielberg's movies. I just love it. Yeah, the ending is a tear jerker when his parents came to collect him finally and the mother was the first one to recognize her son.
I watched it for the first time while living in Beijing,
the end scene made me cry too, being a foreigner (in China this means even more) far away from home... and in the country where it took place
