Maybe it is just me, but I swear I'm hearing Mr. Elton call Miss Taylor Mrs. Weston right there as she greets him. I've played it back a few times with the sound all the way up and it sounds like Weston.
I love how both the actors who played Edmund in the two versions of Mansfield Park are in this scene, and one of them actually IS a clergyman! Ahhh nerdgasm.
You know after watching Emma several times now, lol I can honestly say I love Mr. Knightley more. I love the way he is always there for Emma in so many ways. Just too many to pick up on in just one viewing. Even in the very beginning when Ms. Taylor gets married and Emma is alone in the house reflecting back with sadness, you see Knightley coming into view up the walkway through the window. He's right there at the right time to pick her up.
I think I love this one so much because Emma and Mr. Woodhouse has the most sweetest Father-Daughter relationship ever. He's a pain in the rear but she still treats him with love, tenderness and respect even though he's over the top at times. Just a beautiful thing to see.
who ever you a re who uploaded this *kisses and hugs8 THANKYOU you are a life saver.. LOVE this.. ym names emma and i have a LOVE for dramas and the lords and ladies... thank youuu
A wonderful wersion of Emma! I've watched the one with gwyneth and found it great in respects of acting, screenplay and scenery but this is its equal or even better for it's longer;) Very well, charmingly played characters in so picturesque landscapes:)
So far Mr Darcy was my favourite of Austen's gentlemen but now I'm inclined to change my mind;)
I wonder if Romola could actually read Chinese and that was why the language was chosen? It isn't too far of a stretch to think that after all, she was born and raised in Hong Kong.
@docpirate46 Wedding dresses as we know them today hadn't come into vogue - historically, marriage was often a financial or political arrangement and the dress worn during the ceremony was expected to be representative of the bride's position in society. White didn't become popular for wedding dresses until Queen Victoria's wedding in 1840, so before that it was not uncommmon to see the woman wearing a colourful or - if she was from a poor family - what she considered to be her 'best' dress.
@GlitteringCyclone Thanks for the information. But what I meant was- Everyone were wearing the same clothes in the wedding as before when Emma was contemplating her plan for the wedding. So did they married on the same day??...I didn't read the book...so...
I like this version for showing the background stories of all the characters of the novel. Not just Emma, Harriet, Mr. Knightly, and the rest of the gang.
well i lvoe any and all jane austen movies made by the bbc especially! most especially the really bad ones form decades ago - those are pure gold. i don't like this emma's facial expressions though ah well i'll look at everyone else! :) :) thanks so much for posting this!
Kate Beckinsale's version of Emma will always be my favorite, but the beginning of this version is unparalleled. Seeing the three different children and how they were brought up was something that no other version had done, and I REALLY love it, because it makes you really understand how difficult things were for Frank (though he was still an ass when he grew up), Jane, and Miss Bates. I think the beginning of this really adds to the story, which is saying a lot because beginnings rarely do.
i really dislike this actress in the role of Emma, that thing she does with her eyes makes her look like a crazy lunatic, and the charactor of Emma was not that sort of person
@cautionhorsey yes, similar feeling here, and because of her acting, i kinda dislike "Emma" in the story... because she acts like a crazy woman to shout and yell. ya, it is really different from the original...
but, i admit,
this version is not that bad as other ppl think. I do think that it is also worth to watch.
This version is good too, and attracts to keep watching= )
@cautionhorsey Luckily, the actress (Romola Garai) doesn't bug her eyes out in Daniel Deronda. Check her out in Daniel Deronda. You may like her better.
i absolutely love this version, it followed the story very well and all the actors did such wonderful jobs...i dont think romola's performance was too modern, it was just very lively which is exactly what i prefer about her over kate
definitely prefer this to the Gwyneth Paltro version! I think that Romula gives Emma more life in this production!! and i think JLM is fast becoming a close second to Colin Firth in P&P! Perfect!
making the character a bit more 'modern' doesn't mean that the character is being compromised! i think it makes Emma more human and appealing to a modern day audience!!
What a random opening. The childhood trauma, the Chinese, the indelicate impertinence ("Not you, silly. You're not the romantic sort"), the talking in church, the costume department's apparent obsession with mauve... And, anyone else think Mr Elton > Mr Knightley? Seriously, Elton's hawt.
@patebrisee Keep in mind that television and print are totally different medium with very different audiences. The series producers can't keep everything Austen or follow the book exactly, because they're only doing adaptations. This means that they have license to cut some things or add some things (within reason) to make the story fit better into the medium.
YUMMY... Johnny Lee Miller narrates the start... as well as being 'the perfect' Mr George Knightley... Ooh I do love this version above all others... Happy me indeed... :0)x
I don´t like Romola´s ditzy Emma. I think she comes across a tad bit cartoonish in trying to portray a young woman. I much prefer Kate Beckinsale's Emma, which is more subtle, and really more effective in conveying Emma's beauty, self-confidence and immaturity.
I love Michael Gambon and Romola! Both of them were awesome in Amazing Grace - especially she. She has such sparkle and arch mannerisms - I can't wait to see the rest of this!
I love the intro... an original touch to show Emma's early life. It's enjoyable to see different film versions of the book, each with a particular slant and style.
What i particularly like in this version is that it shows us things not presented even in the book, like Isabella's love story and how the early lives of Emma, Jane and Frank can be compared. In general i liked this version, Romola and Jonny are very good indeed!
Romola is very likeable but her informal acting style is not suited for the role of Emma. Her formidable heighth is a disadvantage in this role because it makes her stoop. The actress'es body movements are clumsy and uncouth, her posture is bad, and her facial gestures seem unguarded and clownish. She is better suited to play the healthy farmer's daughter rather than the daughter of landed gentry.
Hmm i can tell i am going to love this, but already i don't really like Emma : / She seems to play with people like they are her toys, and she has a total disregard for other peoples feelings : / , i hope she changes soon :) x
Romola Garai's big mouth was a such a distraction for me in this movie that it was difficult to enjoy it.
She was very well cast in Daniel Deronda, but she made a horrible Emma, (no grace at all), while Jonny Lee Miller was a very "soft" Mr Knightley. However, I did enjoy the rest of the cast, specialy Michael Gambon.
I love that you posted this! I think it might be replacing the '95 P & P as my all time favorite Austen adaptation. I don't understand all the complaints about it being "too modern." I think sometimes people confuse the very formal language of the time with thinking that people from the time period were always stiff and unnatural. People are still people no matter what time in history they lived, that's why JA is so brilliant!
Mr Elton.. was Edmund in Mansfield Park to Billie Pipers character of Fanny... Mr Knightley was Edmund, but I cannot remember who played Fanny Price in that version.. anyone out there in YouTube land know who she was???
I think this version is JUST AS GOOD as the Kate Beckinsale one, and I absolutely adore that version... so of course I will have to love this one too... Yep I do... *grins* :0)x
can someone help me out here? soo this is the 2009 version of emma? and it's not a film, it's a tv series??? cuz i need to watch the movie as part of my book report for english. idk which one to watch.
@annnieeex3 This one and the one with Kate Beckinsale are both fairly faithful to the book, and are both TV mini-series. The movie version with Gwyneth Paltrow is fun, but not as accurate. Does your assignment specify that it has to be a made-for-theaters movie? Because I think these two series are far superior to the only theater version.
I wonder if Johnny is becoming "Jane Austen's boy". He was the dream man in Mansfielf Park and now in Emma! He's gorgeous but let's see if he's a perfect Mr. Knightley as well as a perfect Mr. Bertram.
This is the best Emma I have ever ever seen. While both Kiera and Gwynneth's were good, this is spectacular. I also like that the DVD has scenes which were cut from the american broadcast. Not much, but when you love it as much as I do, you dont want to be cheated out of a second.
The actors in this version are all completely spot on. Jonny Lee Miller is outstanding, and Romola is a gem.
I have watched this version 30 times, and would be happy to watch it every day.
it's really funny to see jonny lee miller(mr. knightley) and blake ritson(mr. elton) together seing that both did the part of edmund bertram in mansifield park 1999 and 2007 version....both are quite cute and sexy but jonny lee miller is my favourit...i just love his boyish looks and he looks better in emma than in mansfield park...just better with the years....
I think I may actually just like this version ^^ I'm fond of the Kate Beckinsale-version, too (I saw it yesterday), but this also has something to it! Nice! I like it better than the Gwynth Paltrow-version (that one, I watched today) - but hey, it's Jane Austen :) Jane Austen's stories are always wonderful!
I'm so sad to see that so many people didn't enjoy this version. I wasn't sure at first, because the Kate Beckinsale version has been a favorite of mine for a long time, but I grew to love this one. Sure Romola's portrayal of Emma is very "modern" but I think she really captured what was important in the character, and in the end I could overlook some modern mannerisms and really enjoy what I thought was a genuine performance. And I thought she and JLM had great chemistry. Overall I loved it!
You know, i hated this version of Emma at first (the actress, not the movie), but now i've grown accustomed to her, and i think she does very well. Certainly the best version, personally of course. :)
Love Tamsin Grieg as Ms. Bates. Even though the character is supposed to annoy the reader due to endless, mindless tittle tattle, there is actually more depth to this character. She is able to extract pity from the viewer.
i think the character of Emma to be a most truthful portrayal of personhood, i like that she's flawed, et'c., et'c., et'c....i doubt VERY much that the typical reader of Jane Austen is not savvy or insightful enough to appreciate her or intelligent and intuitive enough to accept her as a palpable, constant entity and representation of one woman; whole. i think what we're saying is......... this version sucked.
The complaint of the ultra-conservative viewers about the "modernness" of the lead characters in this rendition lies in their misunderstanding of what is "modern".
Progressive people of all historic periods behave and think out-of-box and are out-of-step with their contemporaries. They have more agile and open minds. This is true now and was true then.
Miller and Garai excelllently presented those two progressive souls. "Emma" now becomes believable.

I'm afraid I can't agree with you. You have right to your opinion, and it is in no way one worth criticizing. Actually, I only felt like expressing mine due to your saying, "ultra-conservative."
It's well worth noting that this adaption has many very "modern" moments.
I think Ramola Garai is a charming actress! She needs a TV show of her own in modern times. She expresses the emotions that most women and girls of this age can identify with, but she hardly conveys an Austenian female.
I am confused I thought EMMA married MR. Knightly!!!

Nothing really Jane Austen's work. Hers is truly romantic and very light hearted mostly.
But I do adore Elizabeth Gaskell's work. North and South, Wives and Daughters and Cranford, Return to Cranford are all superb imo.

However, I did enjoy the rest of the cast, specialy Michael Gambon.

best emma yet, in my opinion!!

Now that Mr. Knightley doesn't seem to be 16 years older than Emma. But I think I'll like this version anyway

I love that you posted this! I think it might be replacing the '95 P & P as my all time favorite Austen adaptation. I don't understand all the complaints about it being "too modern." I think sometimes people confuse the very formal language of the time with thinking that people from the time period were always stiff and unnatural. People are still people no matter what time in history they lived, that's why JA is so brilliant!

miss bates is really annoying, no wonder Emma insulted her.

Mr Elton.. was Edmund in Mansfield Park to Billie Pipers character of Fanny...

I love Emma. She's not just a chipie. She always wants to control everything and everyone, but it's also because she's afraid of the future.
She doesn't see everytime that she hurts people when she makes her manipulation's work.
(Sorry if i made mistakes in english, english is not my first language, like you can see..^^')

can someone help me out here? soo this is the 2009 version of emma? and it's not a film, it's a tv series??? cuz i need to watch the movie as part of my book report for english. idk which one to watch.
annnieeex3 1 year ago

Well Done!

it's really funny to see jonny lee miller(mr. knightley) and blake ritson(mr. elton) together seing that both did the part of edmund bertram in mansifield park 1999 and 2007 version....both are quite cute and sexy but jonny lee miller is my favourit...i just love his boyish looks and he looks better in emma than in mansfield park...just better with the years....

I haven't watched this yet, although I plan to, but I have to say BBC is excellent in everything they make, so I have high hopes.

@dancefreak1025 I agree. This is probably my favorite version.
I think Romola's less stiff mannerisms were more because of growing up in the country without much finishing

You know, i hated this version of Emma at first (the actress, not the movie), but now i've grown accustomed to her, and i think she does very well. Certainly the best version, personally of course. :)

who is narrator in the beginning? Mr. Knightly?
SOPHISCE 1 year ago
Best version of Emma so far.
Love Tamsin Grieg as Ms. Bates. Even though the character is supposed to annoy the reader due to endless, mindless tittle tattle, there is actually more depth to this character. She is able to extract pity from the viewer.

The scene in the beginning where Mrs. Woodhouse's casket was carried out of the house was sad.

i think the character of Emma to be a most truthful portrayal of personhood, i like that she's flawed, et'c., et'c., et'c....i doubt VERY much that the typical reader of Jane Austen is not savvy or insightful enough to appreciate her or intelligent and intuitive enough to accept her as a palpable, constant entity and representation of one woman; whole. i think what we're saying is......... this version sucked.
WE DINT LIKE IT.

Progressive it is, not "modern".
