Great visibility on this dive! I dove the same wreck in February had only about 20' of viz and green water! I'm ooking forward to going back and seeing the radar dishes and the new art installation under better conditions. :)
I dove Vandenberg twice in July 2010. It is spectacular, but this is an extremely challanging and potentially dangerous dive, if the brisk current is present-and that currently frequently is present. When you dive in that current, you have to carefully plot and plan your hand grabs going from one point to the next on the wreck. If you don't , you will likely get swept away. An ADV card is not enough-it is all about experience. A diver with just few dives in the log and ADV may have trouble.
I dove the USS Vandenberg in Jan 2010. I have my Advanced Open Water, about 30 dives and it is still a challenging dive. A huge ship, throw in some current, and a keel depth of about 160 ft. We went to130 feet on the first of our 2 dives but it is a dive not to mess with. Loved diving it. Those radar dishes are impressive.
I'm currently deployed to Qatar with the USAF, but I was planning on taking up scuba diving when I get home, about how much experience would i need before I dived the vandenberg?
I had a truly awesome day on August 2, 2009. When I got to dive the wreck it was visible from the surface. Current was also nil so we did a free ascent from the surface to 100 feet. This is a must do on any skilled divers bucket list.
This wreck looks to be amazing... if divers like this stop going there. This is really awefull diving... terrible buoyancy skills... running around scaring fish away (not to mention the excessive bubbles)... and whats with breaking bottles on the ship?? creates glass shards (really nice if you want other divers to accidentally cut themselves). No viable long term reef can be expected to grow there and stay if divers like that keep going there.
@benhoshinji Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I had not seen that detail. Indeed that makes it better about the bottle breaking. Thanks also for swearing at me. Otherwise I might have taken you seriously but now I can only imagine you are simply trolling. Obviously you are better person than I am for putting together that flawless sentence. I notice you also omitted the punctuation ( because, really, who needs that anyway?).
Ok mrspearfishingking, judging by your comments on some of the other Vandenberg videos your not too smart (running out of air at 90 ft and then trying to pass it off as a joke), so I'm gonna help you out and tell you about this thing called sarcasm. its when someone says something without meaning it, just like when FritzOmnibus said we should raise the ship
That's the spirit! We can raise it and put it back into military service, as our forefathers intended. Dammit. Plus the big radar dish can get free satellite tv.
Keep those arms still please! Terrible divers.

Raise the Vandenberg! We can do it. I'm going to organize a Telethon to bring money to this important cause!
FritzOmnibus 2 years ago
why the heck would we raise the vandenberg right after we sank it???
