I can't help but think that Lex Luthor was chosen as the villain for Superman Returns because it was the first film after a long hiatus and possibly a way of introducing in a way the Superman legacy to a new generation would be to have a villain who wasn't quite as 'colourful' as ones they could introduce as the series progressed.

@axel4196 The "short-range Teleport" as you call it was just a super speed effect made to appear faster than the naked eye. It's the only thing that makes sense. The only one that doesn't is the holograms and statue.

@Xerock Richard Donner's Cut replaced the most of the footage of the theatrical release with the footage that Donner shot before he was removed from it, the only remaining footage being what was necessary for continuity. It's tone is darker, with more drama and less of the lame uneven comedy inserted. It also removed the cellophane S and the memory erasing kiss (replaced with the reverse orbit time travel again unfortunately, but it was the lesser of 2 evils). I highly recomend it over this cut.
