lol and I thought using a 3hp motor from a vacuum cleaner for a drum lathe might be a bit too much! I bet that took some practice to get the power levels just right
Wow. Wow. That video contains at least 7 kinds of awesome! Carving a shell in less than ten minutes, on a machine that probably cost you less than $1000 to build. Most impressive, my man. There are some africans crying in Mali right now, as they watch this. I know I'm not the only one that loved the sound when that reamer started cutting out the bowl. You've got some sharp equipment there. Pleeease post a new video with some better quality?!
Hi Fred.. can you send me yr email... I would like to send you some money ..as i need some help making this machine... them stills would be usefull and also i am trying to find out what you use on the drilling end...
This creation was built like a sculpture and there weren't any drawings . It is low tech but complicated and even with drawings it would need a lot of fine tuning for continual use
It was an adventure making and using this machine but would be very difficult to explain .
If you come here you can copy it, an adventure for you cya
i am very busy working on my latest project which will be shown in 2 months, i am sculpting waves and have to build a wave machine before that is possible .
Fred--Very cool lathe--I turn on a 1917 Oliver open gap pattern makers lathe. I turn floor vases from tree trunks but have always had a tough time rounding and debarking the trunks. Your method is one of the most creative I've ever seen-- what kind of cutter are you using under the moveable slide arm?? Would really be grareful for any help==THANKS
Fred-- Thanks for the help --It's very generous of you. I'm a city guy and have no idea what a"rotary whore blade from a tractor" is. A web search was of no real help. What else could it be called--where can a buy such a blade and how is it attached to the bottom of your slide arm?? I think we must be getting close to a consulting fee!!! I would love to build a slide arm cutter like yours. Thanks--
It is suppose to spell "hoe blade" ,they are used for tilling soil in hard areas, approximate dimensions = 4" wide-12" long-
half inch thick. with one edge beveled (which you have to grind to perfection) Usually bent at 90 degrees in the middle with a 6"radius The one used on the slide is bent with 3"radius .If you pause on the drill you can see them.
It's an implement pulled behind a tractor, they are commonly found in areas with high clay content in the soil. It's not nearly as common as say a planter, as in our case, we only had one which was borrowed and used throughout the family when needed. They are only used AFTER a crop has been planted and is having trouble making a stand (breaking through the soil crust and reaching an inch or two in height) It has a hundred or so wheels with about 20 blades sticking off the wheels
Wet or dry , the outside of these drum shells have to be sealed within 12 hours so as to let moisture escape from internal surfaces , creating compression on external suface when drying . Without this procedure surface cracks up to 5 mm apear within 3 - 4 days .
This is the most amazing thing I have seen in a long time.
Would you please answer these questions:
Are your drums for sale?
Where are you located?
Can you post a video in better quality?
Again, so amazing

Pretty cool stuff. Great idea. I make drums as well, but my main tool is the chainsaw. I never would've thought to use a vehicle. Thanks for sharing!

Man! Now thats some engineering for ya! Hehehe, It seems you run a lot of equipment off the axle of your truck. Wave generators, lathes, what next?!
Perfect song for the video too.

I used rotary whore blades from tractors for all cutting edges.
at $10 a piece ,,,, way to easy !
Thanks and good luck

Neat! It's got no dead man switch, though, does it?
You guys do know he's making a drum, not a goblet, right?
RichSPK 4 years ago
Note to self - never own a wood lathe. If you do, some giant with a drinking problem is going to make you his bitch.
Ingenious rig you've got there.
SaintFu 4 years ago 2
Now that is way neat! Just one drink in that goblet should take care of one for the whole night! Well done.
