Remember hearing this in the radio at the time where i was scared shitless about a possible atomic war, at that time a nuclear holocaust was terrible close and a threat that was in the minds of many people around the world (around 1985- 1986) i especially want to thank Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov for my life and that of my family. He prevented a possible nuclear war, read about him on wikipedia.
well, "We will bury you" never meant to be taken as a threat. What Mr. Khrushchev wanted to say was "proletariat will eventually become a gravedigger for capitalism, therefore we(communism) will bury you because your system (capitalism) will cease to exist. "
@Kadishona Lol and yet by saying all Americans are ignorant you're just furthering the stereotyping that BOTH of you are using. Moron. I don't care what race or ethnicity you are,
being a hypocrite is universal in all ethnicities. So both of you shut up and maybe listen to the song which ironically has to do with the very crap you two are talking about.
@g0rillaz01 Dude, check out my other comment, You too misunderstood what I was trying to say. The point of the song was to show that the Russians were not amoral killers, but had as much to lose from nuclear war as we did. That is the point of the lyric.
I added in the Iranian part to update it for a modern audience. We think they are amoral killers, but they have as much to lose from a war as we do, or in this case, they would lose even more. They don't want a war either.
Never had to worry about the 'Russians' much, anyway. They are a pragmatic people who new it was never an option to use nukes unless they had too. The fanatics in the Middle East is a different matter. I hope one day we can work together to rid that cancer and share the spoils.
@alexjyong This is highly inapropriate. Comparing the russians to Iranians is typical american thinking, considering that people in Russia are 10 times more descent than the mostly ignorant americans. Don't you even dare talk about fear from Iran or whichever country you chose to drink oil from..
@Kadishona You completely misunderstood what I was trying to say. The point of this song is that many people during the Cold War had the mindset that the Russians were itching to start nuclear war, but the reality was they had just as much to lose, so if that they cared about the same things we did, they would not be so quick to start a war.
That idea could be carried over to modern day nations that the powers-that-be paint as amoral villains.
i've been reading throught these comms and most of them are CRAP!!! i was born in romania a ex-socialist country who got rid of it (the comunist regim) by making a revolution. this happened in 1989 when everybody from eastern europe did the same. still, at those times people lived better that today and althought we got rid of the regim, there still remains some shadows of the past ! good luck!
Some comments are scary, I love the song and it's great but somehowe it seems some Russian nationalists or communists argue that its not about ideology. Well the song just clearly states that we are all humans. But for those whom actually picked up a book and read something would know that during the COMMUNISTICAL era in Soviet they used science to differ people from eachother, to be a member of working class was genetical.
And as mr Sting sings, he hopes the RUSSIANS love their children too
russia=vodka!,and a great spirit of love to their country(that's why I admire them so much, they LOVE their country) and a great feeling of love between them...russians love themselves as if they were brothers...incredible...

The communism is an ideal, and we to it will necessarily come, a problem that in people initially contains angrily and egoism which need to be corrected. Only therefore the communism has failed!
Communism only doesn't work because greed is very powerful. also Communism has a very bad name because Joesph Stalin made it into something horrible. he made the people of Russia slaves for small pay and amounts of food. I'm from Canada and we didn't get the anti-Communism propaganda that the U.S had. I'm not Communist but i am a social democrat. one of my personal hero's is Communist.
I miss the days when the Russians were the toughest things we in the US had to deal with. Back then I never worried about some crazy suicidal fanatic Russian piloting a plane into a building or carrying a backpack bomb onto a crowded train.
I still remember VIVIDLY seeing a couple planes the Russians flew into our air show in Ohio. The image of that white red blue Russian flag is burned into my mind.
Cheers to the Russians at now being our rivals not our enemies.

I'm a child of 80's. Things were great in USSR then, we were rocking out to Madonna and Michael Jackson. MTV was "the sh*t" and we were more concerned about getting pair of LEVIs then about anything else!
If politicians on both side back then would just drop dead two countries would be best buds through their youth!
So sad that it had to end this way and now we back again threatening each other with nuclear weapons!!!
they were killed because of their foolishness, communism is a great thing, no homeless, total equality and gorbachev was a great man, he had more democratic ideas which would have been perfect
I couldn't imagine a more fair world, than a classless one.
But 2 things must be said.
The Sovietunion didn't play the communism by the rules. Lots of money went into single people, so the fact that The Sovietunion went under is NOT a proof that communism is a bad idea. It only proffs my 2nd point.
The humanity isn't ready for communism, 'cause we have to stop thinking about ourselves and more about others. Communism lands lack motivation, but just helping others should be a motivation enouth.
@IcenCow Well human never be ready for "comunism", because "comunism" has some flaws specifically depicted by USSR visions of future (work society, where people decides how much to take - well it looks flawed by human nature). However I agree USSR never was example and never did anything to make this to come: the ways of creation, the ways of state running contradicted state vision, which propoganda machine was pumping about communism.
communism is a wonderful idea...the problem is that greed will always find its way in to the heart of the people at the top ..this is of course true of all political systems . I am a proud American. I love my country and would not think twice to die defending her...but we are no longer a democracy either our government is so influenced and controlled by big corporations that it is no longer what is in the best interest of the people its what is best for their corporate masters.
@m82wings GOSH! Russians are NOT communism! open up ur minds. We've been one of the greatest european monarchies for centuries and the most important and significant power both in Eastern Europe and the whole Old World! Communism thing comprises like 80 years of our more than 1000 years of stunning history.Though it's the time of cool inventions, victory over fascism, space exploration, new era of our country great era but it's gone. And also you're right about the democracy, just a word. Cheers.
Disregard that, the first and one of the strongest aspiration to communism was born in Russia, and that's a very interesting fact, it characterizes Russia as unique in many ways.
BTW by his own words Khruschev meant "Your own working class will bury you", so he referred to "we" as to all working class of the whole world.
@IIIZEPHYROSIII And how would You describe todays Russia? Is it a real democracy? I I am asking, cause mass media will always tell what they were told... Zaranyeye spasyba za otvyet.
@IIIZEPHYROSIII Russia is not communist now, but the USSR still existed at the time this song was written, and Russia was the biggest part of the USSR. So yeah, THIS song is featuring the communist Russians obviously.
@m82wings thank you. i've been saying that for years. i figure communism has only really ever worked in 2 instances. the amish and kibbutz in israel. and really, they aren't true marxist states, being that they have religious foundations.
@m82wings Marxism would have been better then communism...i like the idea that every single human being in one country has the same amount of everything...in theory it sounds too good...but in practice...well we saw what happened. The best form of communism was in Yugoslavia, but that one had flaws also...
@m82wings Do you not realise that Capitalism submits to Human Nature permitting everything that is wrong and restricting absolutely nothing including self restraint. Capitalism is a disgusting gangster ideology and is corrupt from the start, no wonder it's failing in the West today and has created a living hell in South America and Africa.v
Communism was going just fine, equality, peace and greatness but America said no only because it was different. Fuck you U.S.A. how is it a free country if you the government s corrupted by both the oil and tobacco industries. I mean come on you cant even get a cure for Cancer, an immigrant named Chyrvinsky used antineoplastons on cancerious tumors and it was proven to work but the FDA did whatever they could to run him out of business because so much money goes into kemotherapy and radiation.
@Avgur1978 yes i lived their all my life until 91 when the USSR collapsed and then the new corrupt government tried to jail me but i escaped and now i live in new york and it is the worst place ever
@CarsonMacMillan I don’t understand. How you can defend communists, if you know, how many people has been killed in USSR in XX Century? I’m also live in NYC and I like to live here. I am remember how badly was life in USSR in late 80-x. And you can’t blame Gorbachev about that, because USSR economy was based on the oil/gas price. When price went down, USSR economy has been collapsed. And last… If you don’t like life in NYC, why you don’t come back to Russia?
@Avgur1978 they were killed because of their foolishness, communism is a great thing, no homeless, total equality and gorbachev was a great man, he had more democratic ideas which would have been perfect. and the USSR collapsed only because they lost the war in Afghanistan. and i wont move back because
@Avgur1978 i hope u also realize that just as many people died by american hands during the 2nd red scare. during the cold war, more people died then in the WW2 and WW1 combined
@kamikaz330 and so he buys 2 acres of beach to drown those sorrows, and like the others who worked with him, they all agreed that on the day, they had hoped it wouldnt go off
i see people constantly saying meaningful things to sum up this song, i see people who try over and over i wanted to do the same but i realise that no one could come close to being as meaningful and beautiful as this song. good work sting

When this song was being produced in was at a time when most Americans had an imbedded fear of the Russians. A fear we were indoctrinated in, because of all the anti-USSR propaganda that was taking place after WWII.
I remember having to take part in nuclear bomb blast drills [hiding under desk, turning away from blast etc.], a blast we thought would one day probably come from USSR. They literally raised us to fear and hate the people of the USSR, they kept us in the dark, ignorant to the truth-
@LemzisMilpis Too bad you think this way. i'm also a russian. to you maybe i don't get it, but i interpret it in my own way. Dima just interprets in his own way too. It's a song, who says that there's just ONE ONLY idea in the lyrics??
@DimaLevy I presume this was about how Sting was hoping the Cold War didn't evolve into something else, something more destructive, and that the Soviets were willing to protect their futures from assault. Either that, or Sting expressing a hope that the Russians were just people and they weren't life-long Drones to the political policies. All of my predictions, which I have numerous of to what this song might be about, derive from the line 'I hope the Russians love their children too.'
@pinz2022 They were both SORELY wrong. Provided, the rather simple evidence that I use to back myself up is the studies of Human nature itself. What both wings overlooked was the fact that attempts of rearranging Humane psychology wasn't enough to win an entire political Standoff. To genuinely understand who was truly right, we have to delve into the peoples mindsets and understand WAR itself. Even then, all we will find out is which Population has the steelier balls...
All I hear from you is postmodernist jism. You are so sophisticated that you can no longer tell good from evil. Under Joe Stalin, the Russians killed twenty million of their own people. How can you not call that evil?
The heart of the socialist/communist/marxist ideology is that human beings can be perfected in this life. Compare that to the Founding Fathers of the American Republic who acknowledged humanity's deficiencies and made allowances
@pinz2022 Reflecting back, I completely agree with you on the fact that J. Stalin was an indespicably evil man! And reflecting back on communism's former leaders, they do for a fact possess the world most prolific mass killer we have ever witness. Mao Tse Tung (Killer of 35,000,000 people; most of them his own!). I believe for communism to truly work, a country MUST have a VAST economy, which is why it works in China today.
@pinz2022 I also believe that if a nation of communism has accurately hit the nail on the head with their respective political system, then it is most probably the closest thing to Utopian you can get; the population, by no means, will be flawless however, the society will exist as near-Utopian. People will have similar wages to eachother, businesses will prosper and the stocks in the market will remain with low, reasonable prices. The people would unite as a content Nation eventually.
@pinz2022 The ground upon which I am intented to lean towards capitalism is because it is simply too difficult to get that level of Livelihood, without including the risk that a sole chink in the political armour of communism is enough to introduce its gradual meltdown, as proven in the past. For example, I would repulse any ideas on communism in Britain (where I live :D) for the lone reason being, we, without elaboration, don't have that kind of money the feed the entire nation!
@martianbasilisk ths is very true but i am inclined to believe that, as with capitalism, people are too immature for communism. Youll always have the people that are willing to sacrifice the greater good for their own cause, usually money. Communism works well only on paper, as does capitalism
Not a fan of doing these "plugs", but apparantly this is one of the few ways to efficiently get heard, and I'm sure Sting wouldn't mind. I've posted my debut demo on my page if anyone has a minute or two, would really appreciate a view and/or some feedback! p.s only posting on songs/artists I like myself, so hope my personal writings and taste has some reflection to my fellow fans of bands! Take care peeps! :)
im ukrainian and this song is sick! so many stories about the russians stealing from my great great grandparents pigs but thank God for no war and for the fall of the soviet union but their is a great quote that says, "history repeats itself"
Soviet Uninion was actually good country ! my parents and grandparednts lived in it and actually they liked their lives them more than they do now after its collapsed
@commander554 true . but my family is not from Russia , we are from Lithuania , and though now lot of lithuanians ,especially young ones dont like Russia ,most of adults agree , that then ,back in Soviet Union life was wayy better than now !
@Agneta000 Sting was being simplistic .He did say "Soviets" in one part of the song. While I was growing up in the cold war USSR = Russia. As I got older I understood that the USSR was a federal state and that many of the republics were once independent countries. I am sorry that it is hard in Lithuania, but freedom is more precious than a higher standard of living. Lithuania was first republic to break from the USSR. Now you are part of the EU. It will get better.
I love this song. The tune sounds so awesome, and what he's saying is awesome, too.

Нормальный человек никогда не будет рваться к власти, создавать системы поощрения и наказания. Любая власть уже есть тирания. Истина в том, что надо жить по совести..... А эта музыка уже 15 лет в топе моего личного хит парада ;-)

IcenCow 1 month ago 2

Cheers.

@IIIZEPHYROSIII

@CarsonMacMillan Did you have a chance to live in Soviet Russia?
I had. And I can tell you, that communism did it so badly that soviet citizens didn't want to live in such country as USSR.
By the way in 1954 Soviet military tested atomic bomb on their own citizens. As a result 45 000 young soviet solders were irradiated...
You can read more about that in wikipedia.... just put in search "Totskoye range nuclear tests"

When this song was being produced in was at a time when most Americans had an imbedded fear of the Russians. A fear we were indoctrinated in, because of all the anti-USSR propaganda that was taking place after WWII.
I remember having to take part in nuclear bomb blast drills [hiding under desk, turning away from blast etc.], a blast we thought would one day probably come from USSR. They literally raised us to fear and hate the people of the USSR, they kept us in the dark, ignorant to the truth-

@ISENTRY ...the truth that Russian people were not the bad people at all, never were...
But our leaders turned innocent normal people we knew nothing about into - "boogie men!"
Anyway, I believe that is what Sting is trying to get across to those who had or have that fear of...
Peace and strength to the Russian people... we hope you get the leaders you want, the ones who care about you!

So who was right? Mr. Reagan or Mr. Gorbachev?
Look to history to find your answers...
pinz2022 1 month ago
@pinz2022 They were both SORELY wrong. Provided, the rather simple evidence that I use to back myself up is the studies of Human nature itself. What both wings overlooked was the fact that attempts of rearranging Humane psychology wasn't enough to win an entire political Standoff. To genuinely understand who was truly right, we have to delve into the peoples mindsets and understand WAR itself. Even then, all we will find out is which Population has the steelier balls...
martianbasilisk 1 month ago
@martianbasilisk
Basilisk.
Compare that to the Founding Fathers of the American Republic who acknowledged humanity's deficiencies and made allowances
pinz2022 1 month ago
@pinz2022 Reflecting back, I completely agree with you on the fact that J. Stalin was an indespicably evil man! And reflecting back on communism's former leaders, they do for a fact possess the world most prolific mass killer we have ever witness. Mao Tse Tung (Killer of 35,000,000 people; most of them his own!). I believe for communism to truly work, a country MUST have a VAST economy, which is why it works in China today.
martianbasilisk 1 month ago
@pinz2022 I also believe that if a nation of communism has accurately hit the nail on the head with their respective political system, then it is most probably the closest thing to Utopian you can get; the population, by no means, will be flawless however, the society will exist as near-Utopian. People will have similar wages to eachother, businesses will prosper and the stocks in the market will remain with low, reasonable prices. The people would unite as a content Nation eventually.
martianbasilisk 1 month ago
@pinz2022 The ground upon which I am intented to lean towards capitalism is because it is simply too difficult to get that level of Livelihood, without including the risk that a sole chink in the political armour of communism is enough to introduce its gradual meltdown, as proven in the past. For example, I would repulse any ideas on communism in Britain (where I live :D) for the lone reason being, we, without elaboration, don't have that kind of money the feed the entire nation!
martianbasilisk 1 month ago
@martianbasilisk ths is very true but i am inclined to believe that, as with capitalism, people are too immature for communism. Youll always have the people that are willing to sacrifice the greater good for their own cause, usually money. Communism works well only on paper, as does capitalism
