i just wish that when Nvidia bought the company 3Dfx, they should have continued to develop it instead of throwing the most important parts in the bin.
Looking at games that used 3Dfx back in the days you can really tell how much before thier time those graphics were. As an example, take a look at the water in Aliens vs Predator, things float around in it and gets carried away by waves, also when you walk around in the water the water moves away from the player, and thats back in 1999.
this does not work... Do I have to install SLI Drivers in anyway also when just 1 card is installed? Does it matter what the main graphics card is? I have a GT 430 with only a DVI output. But I don't have to install the VGA Loop cable in order to get a picture of the voodoo 2 card right?
The interesting thing about old games like this are, back then you had to program them very well, so that they could function on those slow PC's as well as if you didnt program it very very well they wouldnt work at all. So this is why I would take an older game over a new one any day.
Bloody hell... that looks amazing! better than the graphics in the computer I'm typing this on, in fact. 3dfx was years ahead of its time, I can only imagine what it'd be like if they were still around. i think I may have to pick up two Voodoo 2 cards on ebay, in fact. =D
@commodore256 Most likely not. The Voodoo5 5500 used the AGP 2x interface, which is not compatible with 4x/8x slots (different key, different voltages) AGP 2x died out way back in the early P4 Athlon XP days, so you'd have an abysmally slow PC to run Windows 7 on.
@panties82 voodoo2 still lives with all of us older gamers. I still have a huge 3dfx collection with hard to find 3dfx cards too. in fact i have a computer running 2 voodoo 2's in sli . another i use for fun benchmarking my voodoo 1,2, 3 4 5's and some voodoo rush cards.
Windows 7 is actually really awesome for old-ass games. I got Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom w/ the Windows 95 patch working perfectly in it... It was the 64-bit version of Windows 7, too.
The Good old days.. I still have some old games that works well with 3dfx! to name some, is serious sam1, Resident evil2, Quake1/2/3, Hexen, NFS SE, FF7/8 (D3D for 3dfx), I think thats all I had. =) voodoo still live!
@bluetoaster8822 I can't run Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight... When I try to to the setup it tells me something about cannot run 16bit mode blah blah blah... Windows 7 Ultimate 64...?
@abdulah786 64-bit OS's Can't use 16-bit programs, I THINK Dark Forces II is 32-bit and only the install program is 16-bit, use a VM or DOSBOX to install it and then move the installed files over. Hope that works.
I said legacy, not processing power. NVIDIA rocks and I love their cards to death (except for GeForce 2 and FX), but let's face it. There are people who still like their old 3Dfx Voodoo cards. The purpose of this tutorial isn't to replace modern video cards, but a fun project for us old timers to re-live our glorious past. I guess when you're old like me, you see video cards differently. I hope that's not a problem for you =)

I would like to install just 1x
Diamond Monster 3D II 8mb Voodoo 2 card.
What do I have to install for drivers?
I have installed
3Dfx Voodoo 2 SLI (secondary mismatched)
3Dfx Voodoo 2 SLI (secondary)
this does not work... Do I have to install SLI Drivers in anyway also when just 1 card is installed? Does it matter what the main graphics card is? I have a GT 430 with only a DVI output. But I don't have to install the VGA Loop cable in order to get a picture of the voodoo 2 card right?

since when does an FX5200 run Aero?
nelizmastr 1 year ago
You can run games even on a single V2 Card in 1024x768. Just with deactivated z-buffer.
