@JaredPolin Watch out with the battery story. What you're saying is true for old batteries (NiMh and NiCd) but NOT for the new lithium-ion batteries. A Lithium-Ion battery doesn't have the "Memory effect", so you can charge it at any given percentage without affecting the life of the battery. With a lithium-ion battery it's better to let it charge up to 95% (not 100%), and fully discharging the lithium-ion battery can damage it permanently.

@lobaker1 honest opinion is def dont do it. Stick with better glass, you can pick up a 35 1.8. Dont get sucked into needing more zoom. Faster glass will set you apart.

@MrNoxxide I sell both at work, the overall performance of the two is VERY VERY similar. Go for what ever is cheapest then the bigger decision will be your lens - try establish what you want to take pictures of then look into lenses that canon offer and the same with nikon.

I shoot with a canon - Very happy with it and am ver comfortable with the menus.

Nice video. I've had the D3100 for over a year now (having bought 3 lenses in addition to the kit lens, and have borrowed some more lenses from my dad), and I'm very happy with it. Sometimes it feels like a more advanced model (D7000?) would be cool to have, but so far (at least for me) it's more about _what you are taking photos of_ that matters. That in turn indicates what lenses you need to have. From my very limited experience: mostly any new DSLR will be good enough for most people's need.

@CBKScousins If you want a natural fisheye, yes, such as the 10.5mm for Nikon. However, I think you can get an extension or something off of eBay that gives you the effect of a fish eye lens on your standard kit lens. Or you can always edit it in Photoshop

Hey, so I have this camera and am thinking about saving up for a really nice lens. I would love to have the 85mm 1.5G. So my question is... is it worth saving up that much money for a really nice lens just to put it on the Nikon D3100. I know it's more about the glass then the body, but I just wanted your input. I am not a pro, but people do pay me to have their pictures done. I said that because this lens is used mainly by professionals. :)

@jsdptenis with the size it probably depends how long you will be taking photos before putting the card into a computer. for ex. my old 16GB card could take 9000 photos before becoming full on average.

@jsdptenis I got the 32G and you can pretty much take over 3.6k FINE quality pics and tons of video. It depends on how many pictures you will be taking. You can go with a smaller G but you will need to upload them on to a hardrive more often to keep that space available. just my two cents

Hey,i have this exact same camera and im a complete beginner with it.and I had a question for you about it.When i try to take a picture i can never get the focus right because the focus button is the same button for taking a picture.When i push the picture button down it messes up the focus and the picture comes out blurry everytime,how man i fix this.I know im noob but any tips will help me.Thanks,great guide

@l6barz on ur lens left hand side there is a slide with an A and a M switch it to the A and as you are going to take a photo press the 'take a photo' button half way down only and then again fully down. That way itll AUTO focus without u having to move ur lens usually it works amazingly but if u dont have a steady hand or are messing with ur lens then it wont work.

@ceverton11 canon and nikon are both LENS makers, they arent camera makers thats always an interesting fact. But yea both are good cameras, but in order to find out which one is the best is completely up to you. One favors nikon over its super easy to use guides etc, plus quality is almost the exact same and others favor canon because they want to be 'fancy' sometimes the guides are hard to work with and mostly pros go for them. But really its entirely up to u!! ^^

@13uddha1993 Sound could be annoying for people like me. I take picture for the plays at my school. When it's on the regular mode, the actors can hear me taking pictures and it could be very distracting. When I have it on quiet, they might hear it every so often, but not so much.
