A fact is that the sonic boom is continuous. It travels out and away from the aircraft and is literally dragged along behind the aircraft. How far back is determined by the speed that the aircraft reaches (the faster the speed, the farther back the "boom" will be).
The vapor cloud is created by compressed air at the bow of the aircraft. Compressed ar heats up and can carry more water. As the bow wake begins to weaken along the fuselage compressed air cools and the extra moisture condenses out. Therefor, the vapor cone is the area of heated compressed air cooling back to normal temperature and density. As the sound barrier is broken the aircraft passes through it's own bow wake so vapor is no longer created.
@trams33 your eyes are only working due to light hitting the backs of your eyes... So technically, you won't see a thing - as it is going faster than what your looking at - also, it's about 600 million mph... So it goes around the world at over 10x per second. I don't think you'd see that!

If this was actually breaking the sound barrier the jet would pass and then you would hear a much louder bang a few moments after the plane has passed. Listen, I've been on the test range. The aircraft is only hypersonic. If it was supersonic all present would be deaf. It is ileagle internationally to break the sound barrier for less than a national emergency. The vapor cone is actually proof that the aircraft has not ecceeded the sound barrier.

This isnt breaking the sound barrier. I live on the space coast in florida and when the shuttle comes back in from being in space it breaks the sound barrier and its a huge fucking boom and my whole house shakes. And my house isn't even close to it.

Wrong! Jets flying at over Mach 1 cannot break glass. The Mythbusters along with two or three Blue Angels F-18s have proven this to be false. Glass WILL NOT BREAK if a jet flies past it at over Mach 1, OR if a bullet zips past it at extremely close range (an inch or two).
But yes, indeed these jets still make a hell of a racket even at speeds under Mach 1.

What I wonder is, if jets fly low and breaking sound barrier, they can brake the glasses of houses. Why the fuck arent those guys ears broken?

Wrong! Jets flying at over Mach 1 cannot break glass. The Mythbusters along with two or three Blue Angels F-18s have proven this to be false. Glass WILL NOT BREAK if a jet flies past it at over Mach 1, OR if a bullet zips past it at extremely close range (an inch or two).
But yes, indeed these jets still make a hell of a racket even at speeds under Mach 1.

For the doubters!!!. THIS WAS BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER AT "KOKSIJDE BEACH (North Sea) Belgium. It was a Belgian F16. I WAS THERE!!!. and DEF!!!.
Ask the original Filming at the Kolonel of the 5th Wing of Koksijde Resque, He 'll tell you THIS WAS INDEEN IN BELGIUM & BERAKING THE SOUND BARRIER.
