Thanks for the memories. Some classic idents there. I remember one BBC ident from (I'm pretty sure) the 80s, with a cartoon robin, but haven't seen it since its original run, and can't see it in your list. I reckon it'd be between 1982 - 1985.
Up until 1990 BBC Wales used their own Christmas Idents & one I remember from 1981 had 3 rotating stars side by side with 'BBC Cymru Wales' placed underneath in bold orange lettering.
the idents were never the same when they lost the mechanical ones in favour of animated ones. The xmas pud is a classic of British television history.
1986 one is my favourite as it would have been my first xmas that year. Im sure they repeated some of the older ones before i was born. Because they look so familiar
I remember mostly from the partridge in the tree in 1988 onwards lol
oh my god i forgotten how many of these i grew up with , in the one with the toys under the tree on the right hand side there is a grey robot , i got him one year he talked and bumped into stuff and turned away ,got goosebumps and felt all happy again , fantastic happy memories
Why did they start to repeat years? I have noticed they have slightly gone downhill recent years both in quality and the fact they have repeated a few. The BBC christmas indent is for T.V viewers as important as any xmas decoration you could put in your home. It really is the T.V set saying 'look, it's xmas and we are on holiday with you' Without it there would be a certain something missing.
No they were exclusive to their own nations, but I think they've all carried the same xmas idents as England since 1991. The bbc1 wales xmas ident from 1986 was really nice IMO!
Fantastic montage- my faves are 1986, 1994, 1999 and 2001. The penguins one eventually grew on me altough it's lost its magic slightly since they made it into an all year round ident!
from 1980 - 1996 the idents were great, especially the one from 1986. i love the animated and mechanical idents. for me, it shows that the beeb dont have to fork out a loada cash on new idents like they do these days. from 1997 onwards, i think their idents have been really sterile and a tad over the top. keep 'em simple!!! this years ident will probably be similar to last years anyway...& the year before that.....& the year before that.....
Don't get me wrong Miraoister, I do think it's a decent ident but perhaps should have just been left confined to Christmas so that its sesonal magic could be better preserved. Anyway, I still think it'll be back in xmas 2008 in its original version alongside a new festive ident.
I emailed TVARK yesterday and they said that they had located some footage of the 1979 ident, and it will be online between now and Christmas. They have also had the network version of the 1992 ident for years!
I love the 2004 ident with the Christmas pudding space hoppers! :D

Was 1984. In fact that one was the one which for "sexist" issues they had to have a snow woman and they gave her breasts to show this!
benjross 2 years ago
Really? The world's gone mad. 1984 I was 8 so I wouldn't have been troubled by such issues. Thanks for the info :)

I think the mechanical idents had a certian something, more atmospheric and down to earth, forget the cgi ones, far too 1 dimensional in my eyes.
edgey2001 3 years ago
How many times they made
this BBC montage for a year
now. Until CGI was born in the 90's
and now in 2000 we can see this
for a year all those BBC station
id until today

The christmas pud from 1977-what a long time ago that was and I remembered it from my childhood. Brilliant compilation.

"AJrockchannel" is right about the 1974 ident. To see what the 1974 ident really looked like, then go on the bbc section on Tv Room.

The 1974 ident wasn't the one from the BBC VT. It was almost identical to the 1975 ident exept it said christmas on BBC1 instead of Christmas BBC1.
