friends of mine had the vet out to check a very colicly draft mare of theirs... vet says isn't colic it's labor, No way they say- the only stallion she's been around in 5 years is the neighbors mini..... where there is a will there is a way.

that's actually what alot of breeding stables do to see if a mare is in heat. They bring in what's called a "teaser" horse. usually a mini or a shetland. If the stallion re-acts like a stallion would to a mare in heat, they know the mare is ready for breeding, and they bring in the REAL stallion to...yeah...

That's how my 13.2 hand half-Shetland half-QH got created with a fence jump horse romance. I always wondered if the QH mare stood in a ditch to make it possible. I'm not sure who jumped the fence, but probably the Shetland stallion.

Then why does every show society in Australia have Miniature Ponies listed in their show programs? two different breeds, one, if there was no comparison to height, would look like a big horse, whilst the other is often heavy in the barrel, Miniature Ponies in Aus cannot exceed 34 inches at the last hair of the mane, whilst miniature horses cannot exceed 38 inches at the last hair of the mane, one is heavy and stocky looking, the other is extremly fine, there is such thing as a Miniature Pony

I am in Australia, American Shetlands are also completely different to the Shetlands we have here, our shetlands come from scotland, and are extremely heavy looking, and can be up to 12 hands high, any horse reg AMHA in aus, as soon as they go over 34 inches their papers get revoked, i will have to find pictures of the two different breeds of miniature to show you the difference.

I would have to agree with Carambee...I have been around horses my entire life and that mare is completlely receptive...They greet, she turns to offer her flank to him...He pokes at her to see if she is willing...She flags her tail (or tries to since she is against the fence) and she urinates...All clear signs that she is ready to be covered by him.

excuse me, but first, that is miniature HORSE, not a pony. Many farms will purposely put a "teaser" stud pony in the pasture next to mares they want to breed because he helps bring the mares "in season", and they can easily see she is ready, because if she wasn't, she'd kick the crap out of the stud.

As a Miniature Horse breeder myself, I see that all the time. Usually one or the other (the little stallion or the big mare) loses interest fairly quickly, but it won't stop them thinking about in the next day! The pintos are so cute!

lol- I have 15+ years experience with horses- and yeah, it does look like a clear sign of her being receptive to wanting the little guy- rofl. Its a shame that sometimes pairs of horses are forced to breed against mares that arent too receptive to stallions-playing with evolution of attraction- can make poor health in foals.
