Hey Man I Was Looking At One Of These On Craigslist, lol. Are The Sounds You Using All Inside The Keyboard, Or Did You Have Expansions? Im New To The Higher End Keyboards And Can You Tell Me If You Think This Keyboard Is Worth $900 Used? Thanks
I think what your vid demonstrates is that, yes, the Fantom X is a superb machine - but it really, really helps if you can actually play the keyboard; have some chops & some grace about what you do. I feel that some (hopefully a minority) folks by a 10,000-sounds-in-one keyboard hoping that not only can it make the sound of a violin or a trumpet, but that it will somehow imbue their fingers with the ability to use the power convincingly.
Thanks for the feedback...i have a X8 with the weighted keys... It drives me crazy sometime trying to get it to sound bright. I bought the complete piano sex and its the same. It doesn't sound nothing like the demo on the roland website.. I will try the mastering effects. Let me know if you have any other advice...thanks again..
I just got the fantom x. I find I have to turn the velocity from real to 127 to get a nice sound. If i keep it on real no matter how hard i hit it it still sounds muffled and low? Do you find the same problem? Is your velocity on real?
@juan2343 which model do you have? I've experience that if I use a weighted key controller with it. If you have the X6 or X7 it should sound bright. Play with the mastering panel - push up the gain on the high frequencies. I bumped mine up quite a bit, I think to around 10, sometimes up to 14. (Effects -> Mastering) I think.
I think some of the excerpts you chose (mainly "Jump" and "The Entertainer") distracted from what people really should be paying attention to: your improv skills. When I watched this video about a year ago I pretty much noticed the patches you used and the obvious homages to classic tunes. However, upon viewing it now, I'm absolutely astonished by some of the licks you pulled out when improvising (fav bits at 0:01 and 0:37). I'd love to see more of THAT piano player, hopefully more videos soon!
Hey, I need some help! I don't have the audio expansion kit that came with the fantom x-8.
I couldn't find the products on the roland fantom x. Maybe, I just don't know what I'm looking for. Can you explain to me how to find the audio expansion kit for the fantom x. Along with the flash card and adapter. Will any flash card or adapter work? Thanks for the great video. HHHHEEEELLLPPPP!!
@daconcept2012 I'm pretty sure its just a software update. No extra hardware required, except for the flash card and adapter. The software should be on the roland website.
However, you can't compare a fantom X to a motif XS. A Motif XS is almost equal to a fantom G (I think the motif is a bit better :P), but the fantom X is too old to compare to a Motif XS.
I am trying to get a Fantom X7 next to my Motif XS8, that would be a killer combination :)
Hey you play good I pray I get the power to play like you; I also have this keyboard you got. I had it for three months now and I still don't know how to make a song record yet. LOL
Hi sure, 0:00 to 0:04 - improvisation 0:04 to 0:13 - "Allemande Second movement from Partita No.4 in D, BWV 828" by J.S.Bach 0:13 to 0:25 - improvisation 0:25 to 0:33 - "Marcia alla turca" by Beethoven 0:33 to 0:41 - improvisation 0:41 to 0:45 - Super Mario I think 0:45 to 0:54 - improvisation 0:54 to 1:14 - "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin 1:14 to 1:26 - improvisation 1:26 to 1:33 - Tetris Theme 133: to 1:37 - Pirates Of The Caribbean Theme (one of) 1:37 to 1:45 - "Jump" by Van Halen
while the jump sound is really dead on, i notice that no one talked about thriller. while granted it isn't really the same sound, no one mentioned that he played it lol
@ghihwa hey, I went home for the weekend with the intention of looking up what the name and composer was of that piece.... but I forgot sorry! I had to learn it for my Grade 8 a while back. I really don't remember from the top of my head, but I think... I think it was Bach... When I next head home, I'll try to remember to look!
ok thanks Chris you went home for this, i appreciate, if you found out, just (pls) let me know dude. you are good pianist and i love to learn those repertoire so if it's ok with you please pm me the titles so i could learn it to like you do thanks:) more pow Chris!
well, I haven't really played with the G that much. I am a big fan of the X, but the G is the newer model. I can't really say :) Best thing to do is try them out.
Mistagging son of a bitch. This is NOT a Korg M3.. M3 smokes this engine...
But the Fantom IS a damn good workstation.... I almost considered trading in my Extreme 76 for an X7... :-S Dunno.. I just like certain aspects of Korg, like their overall sampling quality, and the consistency in controller assignments (for example, on almost every organ patch on any Korg, +Y on the joystick will activate a Leslie rotary sim). I like that Fantom though! Augh! So torn! Wait.. no touchscreen..
You're really talented. I wish I could have you in my band! I was torn between a Korg m3 and this and I think you pretty much just sold me on the fantom :)
You are welcome. I have been playing keys for about 30 years now (15 years piano-lessons) and I hesitated to go to the conservatory... I did not (because music normally is the best hobby but the worst job unless you're a star), but every time I hear good musicians like you, I am feeling a bit sorry that I never took my music to a higher level. I have the X7 and X8 and love them, but your skills are better ;-)
Wow thank you! I almost went into music when I was choosing what degree to do. I applied to a couple of music courses at standard Universities, but I was a little too late applying and missed the initial auditions... And now I'm stuck (ha yes, stuck) doing a Computer Science degree instead. I know how it feels looking back wishing I had gone into music instead. Wow, was that "jump" patch a preset? If so, it's the first respectable one I've heard. I'm still not sure, though. I'm torn between this and the Korg M3. Have you played one?
Yeah, the Jump patch is pretty close! But, I've seen a modified version of the patch which makes it sound exactly like it.
Yeah, I've tried the M3 and I think its very nice. I'd probably say, from briefly having a play with it, its nicer than the Fantom X. Some of the patches are just excellent. And the touch screen and the portability really make it a nice piece of kit.
omg! that last synth that you used was definately the synth in the background of Ne-Yo's - Miss Independant =O
so would you recommend the X8 more than the G8? Caus I'm after a synth that I can do dance music with, but I've heard the G8 and it sounds more "orchestral". The X8 definately sounds more "Dance" style to me =)
haha, I just had a listen to Miss Independent, and it is the same! They probably used the Fantom X during recording. Its used by so many professionals.
I've not really had much experience with the Fantom G. I've tried it a couple of times at music stores, but not enough to form a real feel for it.
I would definitely say that the Fantom X is very appropriate for dance tracks. More so than it's equivalents, the Motif or the Triton. But they all have their advantages I suppose.
Hi, thanks for your comment. Yeah, the Fantom X is a nice Synth. The Jump synth was a sawtooth waveform I think. The patch I was using there is actually called "Jump for KY", so I'm guessing Roland modeled it directly off Jump. The original synth used on Jump was an Oberheim OB-X.
