Simply one of the greatest matches I have ever seen. I'm not kidding either. The quality of play from McEnroe, almost the entire match, was incredible. Yet Jimmy played his ass off (as he did most of '81 and '82) and came back to win. Then you have the drama with Mac getting into with the chair umpire, and that scene when he tells Connors, "just don't talk to me alright, you got the crowd..." was awesome. The pace of the groudstrokes were excellent, and both guys mixed in change of pace, too.
@casheasy Thanks for commenting. It wasn't shown here in AU at all. Was their Chicago Indoor 1982 final shown in complete form or did the broadcaster edit some games out? Both matches weren't shown LIVE but on delay - that much i been able to find out.
@tenniscollector I cannot remember for sure if the Chicago match was shown live or at a later date, which USA Network sometimes did back then. But I really don't remember seeing it live in its entirety. And it was an awesome match, too. I do know this one was on tape delay the night it happened, or maybe the following day (Monday) which as I said earlier USA Network did a lot. You could get away with that back then because unless you watched ESPN every single minute, you might results then
Indeed , also interesting that after Wimbledon 1981, Jimmy won all three of the biggest championships in England, the Wembley Indoors, Queens club and Wimbledon 1982, each time McEnroe was the opponent.
Connors, of course, won from two sets down after McEnroe lost it in the third set on a line call. Interesting that Connors and McEnroe played five 5 set matches against each other with Connors winning 3 of them. McEnroe, however, won 2 out of 3 matches that were in Grand Slams.
