After their career is finally over, U2 will not only leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of rock, they’ll leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of music. Their 'competition' isn't just rock legends like The Beatles, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones-- it's people like Mozart, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. They are truly one of the ALL TIME greats. Anyone who doesn't understand this needs to listen to their ENTIRE catalog.
I think this song and / or video should be shipped up in space on like the space station so when aliens come here to visit or for coffee, they'll listen to this song and watch this video up there and say... (this is not a direct quite) "Gosh, those humans sure do screw up a lot of things, but this U2 stuff is all aces"... So, if I could somehow work that out, I think I'd be pretty happy.
I think some time in the future this song and video will be recognized as U2's most accomplished work. Its just a brilliant song and video. I guess that they used some of the footage they took for 'New Years Day' in it in places, its around the same era. They needed snow and lots of it for that video. I agree with @MrSoulwaxer's comment, it is spine tingling.
What this song gives me mixed feelings harsh feelings to others very raw song... I try to be optimistic about it I like to decipher the true meanings of what the artists thoughts were on his mind and heart and soul at the time Bono was writing the song among the time and place...... I reverse the Negative to a positive... these words speak out to me boldly... all the other words don't...
Most music nowadays is UTTER wank. This is pure class and timeless. How I long for some modern group to come up to U2's 80's standard or The Smiths or New Order.
you right about that one mate,as most bands these days play utter crap, and i prefer some bands like u2 and also some of the old rock bands from the 1980's,as they dont have bands like those ones these days,as the old bands are the best.
@fataxel LOL !! - do you think in next decade, fans of one direction and jls will honestly recall their music, style or substance (if any) in any shape or form ? I think not - anyone else agree?
@violator9 maybe they will,or maybe music will catch many more shapes ,until there will not be any model or style to regard upon as the "BEST ^_^" And?? Is this bad? Is diversity bad? Is allowing one to listen and compose whatever he/she wants bad? Is "evolution" bad? Well if it is,try changing it or go with it..the worst thing to do is lament and retreat in the music you associate with (maybe) the most beautiful years of your life .
@violator9 If your kid falls in love ,and the music that he dances his girl to is Rhianna/Skrillex/,maybe he will state the same about nowadays music...And BTW, i will recall Radiohead, Massive Attack, Muse ,Wolfmother, The Mars Volta, and many many more
Bands now are shit by comparison compared to this great music and era and so are the songs they write. Creative song writing has gradually been replaced by over commercialised shite. Music is on a downward spiral I am afraid.

This is the album that made knew the band around the word. This, the second single of the album, with the name of the album, 1984.
When they were make the recordings of the album, Bono went to one exposition made in Dublin, that was about the damage of the use of drugs in people and adolescents.....

when i hear this song i remember the times driving home from the city at night. i was on my own for the first time making my way in the world. i remember the freedom i felt being able to see the scenes i grew up with flashing by, but in a different perspective, away from my parents, smoking a joint. Everything cast in earths shadow with countless man made specks of light darting the scenery as far as the eye could see. Gave me chills
No one's probably gonna read this, but I’ll say it anyway cuz I feel at least 1 person will. I'm a young designer and graffiti artist, I know there's a million out there but I feel like my art has a unique individual style.
If you just take a min and give me a chance I'll make you a believer. I would love nothing more than to have a loyal following on youtube. If anyone who reads this could press the "THUMBS UP" others will see it. Just a simple button push will make a huge difference.
I just found out a friend of mine had passed. For whatever reason, this was the first song I thought of. Thank you, U2. Your music is helping me cope.
@sugarbean13 Sorry to hear of your friend's passing! For some reason certain parts of this video have always reminded me of passing on to the other side. Like when Edge is walking down the snow covered road . It seems very symbolic to me of what it may be like for some reason.
Dang it... just one more bit of information I left out of the (4 of 4) entry below. When I got to 3rd base, The Unforgettable Fire was playing (the whole album/tape got a nice workout). Again... - ahhh... sweet memories of my innocent high school days (remember, this was before it was 'en vogue' to acquire assault rifles to go shoot your fellow students and/or teachers if your life sucked). And I actually thought we were going to hell for drinking a couple of lukewarm beers. :-)
ATTN: Due to the standard 500 character limit, I wrote about 1700 characters worth of text that I had to break into 4 parts, which you'll see below. In order for it to make sense, please go to the 4th entry below this entry and read each entry in succession but read 'upward'. Thanks.
Memorable sidenote: I remember 'getting to 3rd base' with my GF, Christmas 1984 under the Christmas tree while my parents 'trusted me to hold down the fort' while they went to a 3-hour company Christmas party... oh, what a magical and innocent time that truly was!
And then Rattle & Hum happened and the U2 I once 'knew' would never be the same again. It was a lot like seeing your child hit puberty, knowing they'd never be the sweet baby/child they once were. Sad... but change will always happen - for good, bad or indifferent. continued...
So, I simply said to her, "I love you"... to which she replied, "I love you, too (U2)". A-HA! Gotcha. :-) Corny, but funny (at least in 19 hundred and 85). PS - In my honest opinion, The Unforgettable Fire album completed their 'old and best stuff' phase. The Joshua Tree was nearly perfect & made U2 an almost household name (and finally got them fully paid for all their years of hard work). continued...
Funny & true story. But first, a little history...
I loved U2 in the 80's just like you guys. I remember hearing Sunday Bloody S. & then buying 'War' on cassette & trying my best to either wear out the tape itself or the cassette deck. Then, I bought Boy & October at my local Turtle's Records & I've been a fan ever since.
That was 1982-ish. In 1985, my then girlfriend said U2 sucked (she liked Madonna, etc). I said I could prove she'd eventually LOVE U2. She said 'Never'. So... continued
for me personally this is the top of the tree for u2. they've never bettered their 80s stuff. its a puzzle as to why this track is never heard on radio. had this on vinyl and wore it out.
brings back so many memories like ian botham haircuts, jeans cut at the knee, my first car in which I played this to death on cassette! ahh.................
My first U2 memory. I was bulied into listening to U2 way back in 85. My first purchase was "Wide Awake". I spent 2 years listening to Boy, October, at al, on my walkman. Then rumour of a new album came alone. Joshua entered my life and I never looked back. U2 are my generation.
What can I say about this song, poetry - just amazing! So many incredible lines -- "I'm only asking but I, I think you know..." I wrote these lyrics on a card and gave it to my ex when we broke up. I didn't have to write anything else, the lyrics said everything for me. And I became a U2 fan forever!

We're doing this to compete with Justin Beibers garbage music videos & to make U2 be heard across Youtube. Copy& Paste this across all U2 videos. Spread the word

I saw the U2s Unforgettable fire tour in 1984 at the "unforgettable" Montreal Forum. A great show, It was magical ! This is my favourite album of U2 - the sound is so pure and the intensity so amazing.
I loved this album I remember it coming out in 1984, I loved this group so much with having already bought Boy, October and War and then they brought THIS out! With my other favourite song Pride (In The Name Of Love) ... a knockout album, preceeded the unbeatable legend that is the Joshua Tree but this album comes a close second for me.
The Aura they had at the onset of their careers was unbelievable..this tune is better alone than any song of the last 10 years..and its still not one of THEIR best...legends
i have always loved this video, one of their best.... as a swede i really like the wintry Swedish countryside depicted in the UF video , the winter of 1984 had a lot snow,,,
how can I forget U...amazing song

ATTENTION ALL U2 FANS!(Sorry for the caps lock),On August 12th, we will be watching the music video With or Without you repeatedly all day to boost it's view count up to at the least of 100,000,000 views. You don't even have to listen to it. You can just keep playing the video back to back all the way through without sound.

Adam Clayton looks like a god in this video. A little bit of stubble and some mouse can turn any man into a model I guess.

No one could ever say that U2's new music comes anywhere near as being good as their older stuff. Wish they still wrote songs like this
