@charlesdespres Nope, I failed with proper EQ in the beginning, since I hadn't EQ'd voice over before. In the rest of the video there is some light EQ, and YouTude completely raping the audio quality of my beautiful lossless sound isn't helping very much either. Check the broadcast demo (link in annotation) for a better sample of my VO and EQ/mastering skills. Thanks for commenting!
@anatol1204 Thanks man, appreciate that. I was actually the lead singer in a band for 5 years and still sing professionally. I had to train a lot due to my voice breaking 2 times now. Once when I was 13 and again when I was almost 18. Check the broadcast demo too! (link in annotation)
The mic is great, and you sound very good. But if I can give you some advice, try sounding more natural, or conversational when doing voice overs. Remember that most (I'd say 99%) of casting agents are looking for "the guy next door" type of delivery. Best of luck!
@TucoRamirez2 First of all thanks a lot for your feedback! I do want to point out that my target market shifted a bit more towards radio imaging and broadcast. If you'd like to see/hear my newest demo, see watch?v=qllS1uk57wA . Let me know what you think!
@kreupelholic As long as you can't hear it in my demo, it's all good. My accent is getting better every day, just have to practice more and more. Thanks for the comment!
@Berrymore84 Thanks! And yes, you still need the power supply. I work with an Allen&Heath 24ch mixer with phantom power, but since the RØDE NTK is a tube mic, it requires different/more power. I am not exactly sure what the tube gets, but it's certainly not 48v phantom. The mic itself has a 7 pin connector, so you wouldn't even be able to hook it up to a normal XLR. The power supply has an XLR out. For more voice overs I recommend you check out voiceover [dot] leviclaassen [dot] [com]
@rampagetv hi thanks so much for your detailed explanation. so i guess that's the reason it comes with its own xlr cable right? do you mind briefly describe how did you hook all this up together for recording? i'm still evaluating which brand to choose and my main purpose is for vocal singing.
@Berrymore84 Not a problem. The setup in this video was NTK mic > Power supply > mixer board (not Allen&Heath yet, I got that a week or so later) > USB audio interface (Numark I/O) > Logic Pro. Right now it is NTK > Power supply > Allen&Heath mixer > out the insert to a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. RØDE definitely makes some nice mics. I highly recommend the NTK of you have the money.
@rampagetv in the long run, i think this mic is worthy of purchasing. before i heard about Rode i've bought a Sennheiser mkh416 shotgun for film shooting and the price was really killing me. until recently i watched a video showing the comparison between mkh416 and Rode NTG-3, it turned out that NTG-3 is better and much preferred by most people. adding on that it's definitely cheaper than my mkh416. now come to think of it i'm feeling a bit regret and should have known about Rode earlier.
@rampagetv thanks again, i really appreciate your help. i have a Roland Edirol UA-25 audio interface and i think it should be ok to use the mic + power supply. you've got a decent setup there.
Thanks! I'm still practicing the entire day every day. Mainly the timbre and rhythm need some work. Luckily I was blessed with a second breaking of my voice :P
One word: Warranty. RØDE offers a 10 year warranty. Also, 2 V69 aren't gonna be the same. The guys at MXL Q.C. allow more errors than the guys at RØDE. Now I'm not saying that you might get one that sucks, I'm just saying that an X/Y wouldn't work optimal with made in China mics. 2 RØDE's are practically identical. Also, I'm a big fan of buying very good stuff. I'm not rich btw, I have to save for every piece of equipment I have. My most recent purchase; Allen & Heath ZED 24.
Lol, in this video I used a crappy mixer, meaning crappy pre-amp. I would suggest a tube pre-amp, and a decent interface. This demo was recorded using a very cheap Numark interface. About that, I would choose Focusrite over Presonus any day. If you can get your hands on a firewire interface that would be great, but USB is good enough I guess. The K2 has the same diaphragm, but it has 2, allowing for figure 8 recording. This means possibilities for interview recording, 2 singers etc.
Right now I have an Allen & Heath ZED 24, very nice mixer with awesome pre-amps (for built in that is..). Any pre-amp above $50 should do, but if you really have money, buy an Avalon 737 (joke).
I would say that the pre-amps in the ZED 14 and 24 are more quieter than in those interfaces, but this is just a small difference. If you are really that concerned about pre-amp quality in this price class, buy a separate one. An Art Tube pre would be nice if you don't want to spend much and want bang for your buck.
Wire mesh pop filters work a lot better than fabric ones, they keep the high end in tact and do great at taking out plosives and other unwanted sounds
You'd think that huh? Well, the "keeping the high end intact" part is not entirely false, it's about such ridiculously small differences, it really doesn't matter for the human ear. And that's coming from an absolute audiophile. Also, metal mesh filters spread the air, while fabric stops it. If you blow on a metal one, you'll hear a hissing sound. Not so much the case with fabric ones. Why would you wanna blow into the microphone? Think about whistling.
@rampagetv Well I have a mesh filter and when I have used it for recording sessions it has worked absolutely great. You might have been using a cheaper one but most are designed to direct the air downward away from the microphone. That's exactly what mine does, and I have also noticed they allow the recording to sound less muffled, but that's just my opinion :) I just suggest you maybe borrow one ane try recording with it and compare it to your other one you may like it!
I have bought 2 different ones in the pas 3 weeks, and it just doesn't work for me. I'm guessing the fabric one you tested wasn't all that good, and also that it's a bit of preference.
@spottedliver certainly. Keep in mind that is has less noise than you hear. I have a Mac running, 2 HDD's, and a stereo set that makes a mysterious humming noise :P
isn't this microphone a bit trebly or sibilant?

I think you conviced me to buy Rode.
Do you think K2 is better than NTK ? In my country i found it cheaper in the nearest dealer.
And what do you think would be better for Rode:
- Presonus Audiobox audio interface
- Focusrite Sapphire 6 USB
Are those interfaces good enough for Rode?

I've head lot's of good opinion about A&H Zed series.
Now I'm stuck between
- Presonus Firestudio Mobile
- Focusrite Saffire 24 Pro DSP
or maybe pay 150$ more and get A&H Zed 14.
In which product preamps would be best?
