Although the film is so obviously miscast...German Curt Jurgens and British Robert Donat as Chinese and tall, fair haired, Swedish Ingrid Bergman as the short, dark haired and British Gladys Aylward, somehow it all works so beautifully...even north Wales standing in for China.
Excellent trailer (from a time when they used to make proper trailers) for an excellent film. I went to see it when I was 12 in 1959. It was a big picture of the time with a superb Malcolm Arnold score. Seeing films like this these days makes it obvious that the cinema today has really gone down the pan since the 1950s. They couldn't make anything as good as this now even if they wanted to. The talent isn't around anymore, more's the pity.
Good Points made. Keep in mind it was she who decided to go when others said she was not qualified it was God who qualified her. What a wonderful lady she must have been.
It's sad but I'm not sure Hollywood is even capable of doing something like this anymore. Most (not all) of the industry is led by idiots.
Hi Aggy ... Thanks for this reminder of what Classic Hollywood did best, tell the TRUE stories of ORDINARY people thrust into EXTRAORDINARY circumstances ... stories that have stirred my own heart, mind, and soul over the years. And how blessed are we who have pleasured in the performances of Ingrid Bergman, who UNIQUELY radiated both STRENGTH and BEAUTY on the big screen. Only Meryl Streep has been able to do that today. I adore them both. You've got great taste, Aggy. Regards, Ivy
