I can remember those days as a tot. Sesame Street would end, then this would shortly follow. I'd listen to the kick ass theme song, then I would go and eat lunch. Ah, those were the days.
When I was in 5th grade, my teacher taped all the episodes of "Learn to Read" and showed them to the kids who had trouble reading. I was always a good reader, so I didn't have to watch it.
This had an effect on all kids who grew up on PBS (at least during my childhood in the 90s). It always came on directly after the last children's show. That ancient synth melody is something I haven't heard in maybe 10 years. It puts a smile on my face.
Public broadcasting is really a beautiful thing in modern society, it provides a great service to people who actually want to watch something enriching or otherwise educational.
Wow.. when I used to watch this as a baby, I would always close my eyes when the theme song came on, I don't know why... probably the scariness of the music? But it's weird because I like it now..
@narnia0100 I had a similar experience with this show. After whatever PBS program that I was watching ended, I would usually end up watching this, and The News Hour with Jim Lehrer. I liked this music, but at the same time found it to be a little scary. Same with the Paramount and Sony Home Video Feature Presentation intros.
oh, the memories. I remember watching this subsequent to Theodore Tugboat when I was three, and thought of myself as smart because I knew what they were talking about(: wow!
I remember watching this and humming the theme song but I was also mad because this show meant that there were no more cartoons until 3:00 and this came on at 12pm... I watched this anyways even though I know how to read! LOL!
Finally found this! This was actually my favourite program when I was 3, 4 or 5ish, that and Doctor Who. Wally was so cool. Needless to say, I could read before anyone else could.
@drexegar He is. He actually got expelled from the company somehow and ended up doing this show. I think Wikipedia details the whole tragic turn of events
@BigT8943 After Wally Amos was ousted from his cookie company, he started over, this time baking muffins. The Uncle Wally's Muffin Company was founded in 1994 with Wally's friend Lou Avignone as a partner. In 1999, Wally bought Lou's share. The muffins are sold in over 3,500 supermarkets nationwide.
"Learn To Read" apparently no longer airs on 13/WNET. It might've been canceled. Don't know when this happened, but wasn't WNET the last remaining PBS channel to still air "Learn To Read"? All the others stopped airing it years ago.
Perhaps the 20+ year "Learn To Read" is no longer relevant in 2009, and is being replaced with something more modern and sleek. Makes sense. Along with "Sesame Street" and "Mister Rogers Neighborhood", "Learn To Read" was one of WNET's longest-running shows.
"Perhaps the 20+ year "Learn To Read" is no longer relevant in 2009, and is being replaced with something more modern and sleek. "
If not, I'll be unhappy in a nonstalgic way.
Hey, at least I can open up a bag of Famous Amos cookies, turn to the guy (or girl) next to me and say (pointing to the bag) "Hey, that guy taught me how to read"
But yeah, it seems WNET (probably the last PBS station that was still airing LTR) took it off months ago, probably for good.
I remember, as a kid trying to get my aunt, who's a Hispanic immigrant, to watch the show when I stayed my summers over at her place during the early 1990's. At the time I often watched PBS's morning lineup. She pretty much scoffed at the thought of learning English (or to read), popped up another baby and is still on welfare to this day. XD
When I was in 3rd grade, my teacher taped all the episodes of "Learn to Read" and showed them to the kids that had trouble reading. I was already a good reader, so I didn't have to watch it.
