It's a great idea to make sure the wife doesn't find out about the cheese grater thing... especially if they know where we keep the razors while we are sleeping! :)
Love your stuff man, way to promote the skill. I generally like to use the ridges at the bottom for a quicker and better lather, though i do have to have two bowls handy (i usually use the container the puck comes in). But of coarse, I'm not knocking the way you work, I always say: shaving is a lot like tossing off, not everybody likes the same grip... j/k
You can usually nuke the glycerin based soaps for around 15-25 seconds, or until liquified, pour, let it revert back to solid state, and you're good to go!
I've heard of melting your puck in the microwave, pouring it into your mug and then putting it in the fridge so it will harden. Is that a legitimate method or could it mess up the consistency and effectiveness of your soap?
@geofatboy Hey geo. Just wondering, what job do you have? Because you have a really nice washroom and alot of razors. If you don't want to answer its fine with me. Im just wondering.
It's OK to "Nuke" certain types of pucks so that they melt down temporarily, conform to the shape of your bowl or mug, and then revert back to a solid form.
Check with the mfgr, to be sure the microwave won't adversely affect the performance of the soap.
@geofatboy Yeah, I have read that if you nuke it too long, it can reduce the aromatics of the soap. 15 seconds is enough to melt it 'just enough'. I wouldn't go any longer than 20 seconds... Also, I should point out that I'm doing this with the $1.50 puck of VDH from Wal Mart :)
Not that there's anything wrong with that: VDH does the trick for me, but I'm looking forward to using it up so I can try the C.O. Bigelow cream I just got.
I like the soaps that you can "nuke" in the microwave to melt them down, then they revert back to a solid state and conform to the shape of your mug!
In a bit more expensive soaps, there are SOME ingredients (moft of them oil distillates) which can't take any heat (or they lose a good part of their functionality, therefor in the production process, they're mixed into the fat phase only after it has cooled down).
Using a microwave is good for rather simple and pure lanolin/gylcerin soaps, otherwise I wouldn't risk it.
You can melt down a glycerin based shaving soap such as Colonel Conks by microwaving it for a few seconds, then pouring it into a mug and it forms to the mug's shape.
i saw a few people that have soap that usually comes in a plastic container in a bowl for mug but it looks like it was melted in it. how did they do that? o love you videos!
What is the name of the soap you are using in this video? I am using Wilkinson Sword soap, comes in a blue dish. Is this mug you demo a special mug for shaving? I have a heck of a time getting good lather, unless I add a little creme to the top of the soap. I have a cheap Wilkinson Sword brush though :0(
What is the advantage of soap vs creme? And Foam vs Gel? The latter I never use, but just curious.
Not sure what you do, but you would be awesome in sales!
Hey, I like the Bandanas! I too have a bike, not a Harley but a Buell XB1200 so nearly a Harley, have to wear a helmet here in the UK though.
Regarding the soap, I just bought some Genuine Ogallala bay rum soap and it says to put in a microwavable container and 30 seconds in the microwave, then pour into your bowl if it dosnt fit! It should be here in a few days so I will give it a go.
@1250storque Thanks! I'm always on the lookout for some cool new bandanas!!! Bad news that Harley Discontinued the Buell Line. I was looking at Sport Bikes last week and checked out some Ducati's. The top of the line goes for $20K US ** AWESOME Bike. Sorry, I digress, don't get me started talking about Bikes, I'll run out of room on these pages. Sounds like a great concept, nuke it down to a liquid, pour it into your container, then, Voila!!!, back to a solid state. Very Nice! Geo.
Regarding the bandanas, I've been riding motorcycles for a long time and have owned 14 Harleys. I always wear them when I ride and even when i don't...
I actually have a larger mug, but I really like my Throwback Old Spice Mug from the 50's!
Besides I packed all of the shaving soap that I removed with the cheese grater around the edges of the soap where it meets the mug. After the first use, it transformed into a solid puck again. Perfecto!!!!

That will work if it is a glycerine based soap. For other types, however, this can damage the soap.

or you could just put it into the microwave for 20-25 seconds and melt it perfectly, then pour it into your mug.

I've nuked the same VDH puck and have had no problems whatsoever with it.
Really not a bad shaving cream for being so reasonably priced.
Not quite as good as Taylor's, Trumper's, or Proraso!
I sell them all, including the VDH at ShaveNationdotcom.

How about microwaving it? Does that have an effect on the soaps scent or properties?
sarelle500gr 1 year ago
@sarelle500gr
It depends on the type of soap, and the ingredients it contains.
Read the comments below...
It is acceptable to microwave certain soaps, and not recommended for others.
Might be a good idea to check the label, contact the mfgr, and or, shave off a small bit and nuke it in a cup to see what happens...
This way, you won't ruin the whole puck.
Good luck,
Geo.

@geofatboy thanks mate.
Do you own a merkur slant? If so what your choice between hd and slant?
sarelle500gr 1 year ago
@sarelle500gr
The Slant is good for heavy beard growth as it is an aggressive shaver with that twisted blade...
Yes, I do own and use one to remove heavy beard growth quickly.
The HD is more of an every day type shaver.
I would not use the Slant on an every day basis...
Best,
Geo.

i did one that isn't a glycerin base. it was van der hagan. is that ok?
nico27004 1 year ago
@nico27004
Yes,
You can melt down the Van Der Hagens Shaving Soap to a liquid form and pour it into your shaving mug.
Watch it closely so as not to burn it, around 10-15 seconds in the microwave is usually sufficient for it to transform from solid to liquid.
Then, pour it into your mug, and it will conform to the shape of the mug and adhere to the sides.
The characteristics of the soap are not affected by the process.
This eliminates the puck moving around in the mug problem...
Cheers!
Geo

how do you know what soaps are ok to nuke in a bowl?
nico27004 1 year ago
@nico27004
You can melt down a glycerin based shaving soap such as Colonel Conks by microwaving it for a few seconds, then pouring it into a mug and it forms to the mug's shape.
Don't nuke it for too long or it will burn.

Some soaps are made to "Nuke" in the microwave and then pour into your mug....
If you do what I did in this video and pour water on top, then swirl it with a brush and let it dry, the puck will look the same way!
The soap becomes soft then forms to the mug's shape when it dries...
Try it, it works!

Ha Ha!!! I'm always up for a challenge, so, if that's a job offer, I'm all ears!!! LOL...
The soap is called Mitchell's Wool Fat and it's a great soap.
The mug is made for shaving soap, it's an Old Spice Mug from the 1950's.
Truth be told, I can mix a good lather in a coffee cup, soup mug, dessert bowl, whatever I can grab from the cabinet...
Sounds like you need a good Badger Brush!!!
I prefer glycerine soap with straight razors, and creams with safety razors.
Best!
