Great job! I enjoy when someone can put their own rendition out there. The negative feedback is obviously from people that don't understand theory. I have only been playing for 6 months (youtube taught, haha) and have made tremendous progress due to videos like yours! I appreciate your time and effort to help myself and others like me out there!
Haha! Finally got why this song soloing is in F while having the Dm Am and Gm chords! No need to buy a DVD, just look at playing buy numbers theory and you'll understand! Anyway thanks for the vid.
to add to my comment: I just wanted to hear someone say something like: "If the song has chords that are a progression in the key of F, then for a start you can just improvise in the F major scale." I know that is the absolute basics, but it gives me some direction and confidence I have been looking for. I assumed that was the case, but was not positive. I was afraid I would have to do something like change scale key with every chord change or whatever. This has been great direction for me.
Well, I'm a beginner, and surely getting ahead of myself, but I have to say thank you. I have been looking everywhere trying to find something like what you said from 6:35 on starting with, "If I play fM scales patterns over it, it mixes perfectly with the music...." As silly as it may sound, I have never been totally clear on this. Teachers often jump from "learn this scale" to "here are some improv tips" without telling me exactly what to do with the scale (for a start). Thank you!

This guy makes real sense on how to play a cover. Don't learn the song note for note, cos you'll probably forget or stuff up when you want to play it to someone.
Concentrate on the correct scale for that song, and you can't sound wrong. Carlos Santana doesn't play like a parrot, he knows the scale and uses that.
Nice lesson! Been surfing around the net looking for a theory class to take...this vid sold me. I'm on your mailing list. You'll be hearing from me next week!
throw in a litte sweet child o mine part I heard;) thats the great part with knowing certain solos, because you can "borrow" riffs and put in other songs with a totally different sound
You played it in your own style...as did Santana and others who have covered this classic. I play it my way...and others I know play it theirs. Many comments on here "nit-picking' how you played it are apparenty people who are still learning to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, or...On Top Of Old Smokey. You rock, man. And I personally appreciated your version, as I'm sure Green, who wrote it, and Santana who made it a Mega Hit would. Thanks for sharing that great version. Great vocals too.
on the intro.....you played the notes one after another instead of sliding from one to another..i do slides and they sound better to me...u did not play like it is in the song...u improvised a lot....ur pretty good and ur improvisation was nice
Nice! It's great you do your own thing with it as well. The comments from the haters? Tell them to post a video of themselves doing it "the right way".
I have Desi's material and it is the real thing. I've been playing more than a few years but had little knowledge of theory. Desi has changed that and I am improving more than I thought possible. Bob
I feel like randy here... Dogg, man, dogg. You turned it out! I'd love to hear you do your own thing with it though. This version is cool and it is true to the original, but I'd love to see you play something completely different that fits your voice better. You have a good voice but trying to do Carlos Santana verbatim is impossible plus I think your range is somewhere else.
You could make something great if you did that I think. You rock, I suck, just my thoughts.
Thanks for the feedback. You might be surprised to know that my guitar work here is not a note-for-note transcription of the original song. I was just playing in the style of the song and follow the basic structure of the solo. In fact, some viewers commented that I played it "wrong." Anyway, the purpose of this video is to explain the theory, or what's happening musically. I wasn't trying to be an artist.
D is the relative minor of F. all that means is if you start an F major scale on a D it is the same key signature as a D minor. i think this might clear up some confusion.
Yes, D is the relative minor of F. The D minor scale and the F major scale consist of the same notes. Since this progression revolves around a D minor chord it's considered to be in the key of D minor (or D Aeolian mode).
They are the same. In my book and DVDs I teach guitar players how to trace everything back to a parent major scale and patterns. It's a system that works very well and clears up a lot of confusion (like thinking that F major and D minor patterns are different).
But D minor and F major are different. Although the one flat key is common, when you move them into modes they become different. With D minor, you can add the C# to give it the harmonic minor feel whereas in f major you can add Eb or B naturals depending on which mode you choose.
The chords, progression, melody and solos in this song are not in harmonic minor nor do they use Eb. Everything about this song is pure natural minor. In order to play something that fits, you need to use the F major/D minor scale patterns.
Santana has many other songs that are based in the other scales you mentioned. For example, "Smooth" includes the harmonic minor scale. "Oye Como Va" is based on the ii (2) chord in the G major scale producing A Dorian mode.
Your guitar is a Cort recognized by the head of the guitar because it is different from the others, I also have a cut on Zenox, I'm trying to play this music in solo, I hope to get me help. thanks Mark
Thank you for replying. Could you explain more where the A# (or b6) comes into the progression or melody?
Is it because the progression was Dm,Am,Gm so the notes of a minor are 1,b3,5 (so Dm are D,F,A - Am are A,C,E - Gm are G A# D) and that means that because the minor 3rd of G has the b6 of D scale that it is D Aeolian?
So is this how you pick what mode to play in based on all the notes that make up the progression?
When you say the key Dm so since that is the 6th (Aeolian) of the Fmaj scale that Fmaj is the parent scale.. Always thought this song was D dorian (opening have seem to have a dorian flavor)
SO makes this song Dm & not D Dorian? Since scales are 1 note difference (b6 or A# & B) note which you don't really see in the song's notes or progression. Hopefully someone can clear this up for me.. Thanks!

Hes showing guitar players how to play the song differently with the same feel. Have you ever seen Santana in concert? He never plays his song the exact same way. Sometimes its very differenet. Music is all about feeling my freind.
I find it to be pretty good. Santana does this alot though. At first i was like you and didn't like when he played his songs differnetly but after picking up the guitar I learned about theory and how to change songs but still have the same feel. Iunno its hard to explain. I just started. Watch some clips of Santana mate. Its unreal how he changes his music but still makes it sound amazing.
F major and D minor are not even close to alike, they are constructed differently. You should have mentioned that they are only similar by the ammount of accidentals they share. D minor generally has different chords then F major would.
That may be true, but the scales are enharmonic, just with different roots. In this case, he's referring to D Aeolian (or D natural minor IRCC), which is a mode of F major.
They aren't enharmonic, they are relative. They don't sound anything alike, and they aren't constructed. Also before you start calling things modes of, the minor scale has nothing to do with the major scale, and only three modes do. The fact that they are the major scale starting of on different notes is only a tool to remember them, most of the 7 common modes are more relative to the minor scale.
Ho I Love That song :)

Thanks for your help Desi.
JohnnyRetweeter 2 years ago
Yes, the mode follows the progression. The progression is the mode.
The G minor chord is built from the notes G, Bb and D. The guitar solo utilizes the Bb while playing over the G minor chord.
To learn more about music theory for guitar see the book Fretboard Theory by Desi Serna.

Thanks!
Dorian Mode - 1,2,b3,4,5, 6 ,b7
Aeolian(Minor) - 1,2,b3,4,5,b6,b7
JohnnyRetweeter 2 years ago
D Dorian would require a major sixth (B natural). The chords and melody in this song use a flat sixth (Bb).

We are trying to put together this idea as a way to further build a non partisan network of people who can respond quick and easy to issues. This is a jumping point.
Everyone can agree Tv is full of agenda and propaganda so this is an easy way to get people to agree and simply turn off the tv.
We are going to get some radio hosts behind it.
Will you help build our numbers and make a video or simply promote it among your mailing list?

Follow the link in the video description to the full version on Google. Then look at the video description on Google. There you'll find a link to the track (which you'll have to copy and paste).

the beginning was horrible. completely different. did you listen the song?
xboxnissan 2 years ago
As mentioned in the video, this is my own version. And the purpose of this lesson is to learn the theory behind the song.
GuitarMusicTheoryTab 2 years ago
wow I didn't know that music get's theories ? Seriously, do the song properly.
xboxnissan 2 years ago
Hes showing guitar players how to play the song differently with the same feel. Have you ever seen Santana in concert? He never plays his song the exact same way. Sometimes its very differenet. Music is all about feeling my freind.

wow that's fucking false

Type in black magic woman live. Tell me if Santana is playing his song exactly like the record.
acoustic905 2 years ago 2
I am not talking about live actually.. I am talking about the fact that it's far from the real song.
xboxnissan 2 years ago
I find it to be pretty good. Santana does this alot though. At first i was like you and didn't like when he played his songs differnetly but after picking up the guitar I learned about theory and how to change songs but still have the same feel. Iunno its hard to explain. I just started. Watch some clips of Santana mate. Its unreal how he changes his music but still makes it sound amazing.
acoustic905 2 years ago
Ok So I play music too, please do for me for example Number of the beast by Iron Maiden differently ? Keeping the same "feeling"
xboxnissan 2 years ago
Applying different scales and patterns over it lol. I just started so I couldnt really say.
acoustic905 2 years ago
But even that, you can't. I think it's just nowhere. I understand your point, but first watch it I was like what the fuck is that ? w/e

F major and D minor are not even close to alike, they are constructed differently. You should have mentioned that they are only similar by the ammount of accidentals they share. D minor generally has different chords then F major would.
oregonskateok 3 years ago
That may be true, but the scales are enharmonic, just with different roots. In this case, he's referring to D Aeolian (or D natural minor IRCC), which is a mode of F major.
Maybe you're thinking of D harmonic minor?
Kidzelda0 3 years ago
They aren't enharmonic, they are relative. They don't sound anything alike, and they aren't constructed. Also before you start calling things modes of, the minor scale has nothing to do with the major scale, and only three modes do. The fact that they are the major scale starting of on different notes is only a tool to remember them, most of the 7 common modes are more relative to the minor scale.
oregonskateok 3 years ago
aren't constructed the same* sorry I literally just hopped out of bed.
