The Inferno is just one part of the Divine Comedy written by Dante. The other parts are Purgatory and Paradise. The Inferno is an interesting read.

And yeah, the developers took their liberty to re-imagine Dante quite heavily.

I think it's not Death who's special, but it's the Scythe that's special. I mean, if this Death (this is just speculation) was that special, he could've done what Death from Family Guy did, just touch Dante, and it would've been over and done with. Either way, Death got owned, and I agree with you when I say this fight was awesome!
