  • thank you for an informative vid. Most just show off rather than instruct.

  • Don't you have to have big hands to do that? cause every slap bass player i know has big hands

  • @shesdwellingwithin I have small hands and i can do anything!

  • @Memphisevil can this type of slap be performed with the thumb? I only own an electric bass so with the palm I run the risk of palm slapping the wrong string

  • Nice, I got it. Thanks. I've played electric bass now for like 5 years and decided to learn upright bass as well...fits rockabilly much better. ;)

  • THANK YOU

  • 37 seconds and you have changed the way i play forever. thanks man.

  • Can you do this on any upright bass? or does it have to be a bass with thicker neck or something so you don't break it? :P

  • @AbGretsch Any upright bass will do.

  • Thanks man, I've been working on these and this just made it click for me (the camera angle was prime), I got it now. Are you using nylon strings by the way?

  • hey Man thnx for xcellent Vid! i was taught to pluck-heel-slap-...maybe i'm doing it bass ackwards! although it sounds purty good...WTF??post some more Jackson! onwards

  • This makes me want to play string bass.

  • Thanks !

  • dude - you just saved my life

  • what do u use to get that angle

  • I htought this said "How to do a DANG triplet" XD

  • killer!

  • what are you doing with your left hand?

i love the sound, but dunno the frets to press >.<

only just starting so my bass ear isn't 1/2 as good as i would like :)

  • Awesome idea on the camera angle there! cool rhythm too

  • i only play electirc bass atm, but can wait till i start getting into the upright, its amazing watching people play, how they just pick and claw at the strings :D:D

  • Thanxs dude.. I love utube.. Got everything..

  • Thats pretty cool!

  • YEEEEEES . THANKS for the explanation !!!

  • fuckin' A, thanks man

  • what kind of strings are you using?

  • One of the best, if not THE best, breakdown of what's actually going on in rockabilly bass playing. There are so many cool vids that DON'T explain...fun, but leaves the technique to mystique.

  • Those strings sound fantastic. What kind are they?

  • AHHH i keep messing up!

  • THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cool

  • oh wow, very informative, I've always wondered about this, thanks! five stars

  • that is fan-fuggin-tastic. that was sweet dude i barely a solid triple down i cant even think about dragging it like that

  • nice example thanks

  • did you put on the strings the wrong way?

  • Here in Finland Upright basses cost too much! Over 1000€'s. I'm glad we can still buy stuff from Thomann.

  • Hitting with the palm is really weird. But it sounds awesome when played right.

  • Thanks

  • hello...when i try slapp it feels like, when the string slams down on the fingerboard there is very little tone and mutch "slamsound" how do i get rid of that (sorry my bad english)

  • I always feel like i'm going to break the finger board, when I try that,, I try to give it a lite touch, but get carried away trying to do it!

  • so helpful...

  • im a noob and have a very nooby question....will it hurt the bass by slapping it like that???

but anyways, thanks for t he vid, helped a lot.

  • nah i can slap ur bass pretty hard and itll b fine.

  • XD thanks...but i borrowed the bass from my music teacher...you think usually teachers hate their bass being slapped? she's moderately strict, not too much tho...

  • idk. i have my own bass so i dont have to worry about what my teacher will think but i dont think ull have any problem slapping unless maybe its really old or something

  • Nope.

  • perhaps at the beginning but you've to get used to it.

  • its ment to be slaped

  • I messed up my fingers pretty bad slapping while playing the festival we have up here. But I also tried Jonny Greenwood-ing it, and playing insanely aggressively.

  • Thanks! That's brilliant! :D

  • freak, but awesome

  • MEMPHIS IS GOOD,LEARN FROM HIM

  • awesome!

  • The camera positioning is the shit! That's awesome.

  • Good angle to show it in!

  • I bet they are LaBella Supernils

  • sweetness

  • WOW...!! Good playing...!! I like it. Thanks.

  • Short, clear and straight to the point. Exactly the way any lesson should be, great addition to Youtube's music lessons.

    Thank you very much.

  • You are good!

  • clearest explanation of this technique I've seen, sounds great, thanks!

  • THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!! I don't know why, but I couldn't figure out how to do this from watching people do it...I kept trying to put the note first.

  • thnkss but i do it sooo sloww

  • very helpful, thanks.

  • Thanks mate, only had my bass a few days and need some nylon strings but that was really helpful cheers

  • Got it! I would have never figured that out myself. What kind of strings are you using?

  • Finally, FINALLY, a video that shows it good!

It's no use filming a guy from the front if the trick is the palm of the hand (therefore hidden from the camera).

    Thank you!

  • You sir, are my hero.

  • are those gust? whatever they are they sound awesome! and the lesson was great angle was perfect and u braking it up for us thanks!

  • yes i agree and that camera angle thing works great thanks

  • EXCELLENT. love the way you simplify it

im in my first stages of learning

  • I tried on my cello, which is a mistake.

haha highstrung strings + super high action= a wanna-be bassist.

  • Good video, Good camera angle. I gotta work on this one...

  • Great teaching, beats any commercial video. And good other clips as well.

  • HOT DAMN!!! I saw your other vids and i was like "how the fuck he do that?"

  • Hey,

Do you hae your strings almost touching the finger board? just wondering because I can't quite seem to get it

  • Hey,

Do you hae your strings almost touching the finger board? just wondering because I can't quite seem to get it

  • Thanks for the lesson!!!

  • Do you need low tension strings to do that properly?

  • yes, rockabilly strings. Ebay.

  • i have eurosonic ultralights. but i cant seem to get it to work. maybe they are too low tension?

  • Thank You!

  • Oooooh! I didn't know you used your palm. I've been doing it wrong. I've been using my fingers like a rake across the strings which has always brought about ugly harmonics. No wonder it sucks when I do that move. Ha ha! Well, now I know. Time to practice.

  • very cool and helpful to boot

  • Will you teach me!?!? Awesomeness!!!

  • i dont play upright but that was pretty damn cool

  • thank you so much for the demonstration!

  • thanks very much for sharing!!!

  • Excellent demonstration of technique. It will be great if you can provide other such technical demonstrations.

  • I will try and get more of them up. With a 3 year old my time is limited to doing so. lol!

  • tricky tricky!
