  • People, this is not Sonic X-Treme. This is actually a prototype of a different game, this game was codenamed "Sonic Mars" and was set for release on the 32X. But due to hardware limitations and the 32X's short lifespan, the project was axed and then reincarnated as Sonic X-Treme.

  • Why is the song something from Sonic CD rather than the Space Queens title used to advertise the actual game?

  • @rockguythirtytwo Because when this pitch demo was made, there was no soundtrack yet. There weren't any levels nor any code either, because nothing of what you see here is running in real time. This was just a precalculated animation, made on an Amiga 3000, to pitch the idea of a 3D Sonic game.

  • @DevilMaster I realize that, but this concept is what eventually became Sonic Xtreme. (Albeit unreleased) Space Queens was the track used on every add video of that project so I only find it fitting to have that on this Sonic Mars video. (This was pitched as a 32X game first then became Saturn's Xtreme then scrapped altogether)

  • the song in this video is in sonic generations Remixed (Stardust Speedway Bad Future)

  • @MotweraCity

Nope.. because this is from 2007.

  • @spongefan8 Video is released in: 2007

    but was done in 1996

  • @MotweraCity the SONG in this video is Stardust Speedway Bad Future from the American Soundtrack IN Sonic CD

  • This is actually another sega saturn game that cancelled called Sonic Saturn(this has nothing to do with Sonic Xtreme)

  • @FireheartZX nope

its from the 32x Version, noob

  • @aaronjs4 Nope. It's not a game at all. It's a precomputed animation made on an Amiga 3000.

  • @DevilMaster hOW DO YOU NO THIS, DO YOU HAVE PROOF OR A WIKI i CAN READ PLEASE? caps*

  • @kreeddem Ask Chris Senn on his forum, and he'll confirm it. URL is in the video description.

  • MYYYY EYES THEY BURNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey, Sonic! YOU'RE TOO SLOW!

  • THAT IS IT.

this idea is so epic, that i want to learn Open GL, and make this game a reality.

  • Song name? Freaking sweet

  • this is better than sonic 06

  • @cybersonic233 MY DOGS TURDS ARE BETTER THAN SONIC 06. Anything is better than sonic 06!

  • @A7XRULES60000 Except Action 52.

  • @sonikku956 you got me there lol

  • I take it that every game has a pitch demo... so how come I can't find any others do, the developers not release them?

  • You know what's sad? This 32x Sonic looks far better than the Sonic model in Sonic R on the Sega Saturn, a more powerful system.

  • That.... that actually looks fun...

  • Wow! This game looks like shit. And the people here that are saying that this game would of been great are the same people that are saying that Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors suck.

  • @YoByAxEs Because it is a pitch. the clue is in the title! It's just a showcase for develpment funding. This was never intended to be the final product.

  • @minichapman Good. Cause for one this, Sonic's speed is never in use here. Another being that this would have been for the 32X, a shitty add-on to the Sega Genesis that should of never been created in the first place.

  • @YoByAxEs The actual gameplay videos are a different story. Even though you are correct, development actually started on SEGA Genesis but was very swiftly moved from 32X to Saturn. For more information google Sonic Retro Sonic X-Treme

  • @minichapman I did read the history of this actually just a few days ago. This video of Sonic Mars is the first that I've seen, while I've seen many other videos of Sonic X-treme.

By the way, I think the final version of what Sonic X-treme was suppose to be looked like shit too. The game just looks like a complete mess and I doubt that it would of have gotten any good reviews if it were to be released.

  • @YoByAxEs Quite possibly but I suppose we'll never know unless the entire communtiy can get their hands on a playable game.

I imagine you could be close to correct though. Although you can imagine the strain of developing this to the point of actually nearly killing some of the staff on that project. Even Yuji Naka threatened to quit if this game hit the shelves.

  • @minichapman Well, yeah. That's true. A canceled game can never be judged by the general public.

I've never heard about Naka quitting if the game actually was released. I only heard that he would quit if the game used the Nights engine.

  • The second part of the video has always reminded me of the Bowser stages in Mario 64. It's odd how the team decided to opt for the fisheye approach instead, which reminds me of Mario Galaxy!

  • Hmm!? A playground/theme park in space!? So THAT explains why Sonic Colors is so amazing!

  • Star Dust Speedway. Perfect music for the video

  • This is Sonic Mars, not Sonic X-Treme.

  • mario galaxy looks like nintendos version of this on crack

  • that is a slow moving sonic.

  • looks like butt

  • That is the worst graphics I have ever seen, even Sonic Robo Blast is better!

  • @TomicTheHedgehog

It's just a pitch demo. It's supposed to be basic and just really show what it would look like, at that stage.

  • sonic mars not sonic x-treme

  • even if this isn't a real game im making a research about sonic xtreme projects so that i can make a remake though i dont know where to get the sprites but i will show the remake though can somebody help me the sprites.

  • shit

  • this is not sonic xtream this was the first planed 3d sonic game witch was going to be baed off of satam but quickly evolved in to sonic xtream...the game was going to be name sonic mars

  • What was this supposed to be on?? 32X???

  • That's actually Amiga 3000 graphics.

  • cool music track! like, progressive metal

  • It's Stardust Speedway Bad Future from the American version of Sonic CD.

  • that game looks awful

  • @mush619 this is only a beta

  • That wasn't even a beta. Hell, that wasn't even a game! It was just a CGI video created on an Amiga computer and made to LOOK like a game, as Chris Senn himself explained.

  • @DevilMaster OH i didnt know that...thanks

  • It looks like an unfinished, unpolished version of Sonic 3D Blast.

  • @GawinTheHedgehog

well it is a 32 bit game well was going to be

  • its just recycled sonic cd music...

  • Reminds me of sonic chronicles dark brotherhood

  • I can't say I'm impressed. I might have been back when 3D was new, but not now. And it's a lot slower than anything Sonic-related should be. I like the idea of a platformer-oriented Sonic game more than a boost-happy one, but there should still be speed, otherwise it may as well be a Gex game or something.

  • the later bersions were much faster and looked better (but had a weird fisheye look to them)

  • @SolarisParadox They probably had him walking slow so he wouldn't fall off the stage.

  • Hot damn, Sonic looks like ass unless you zoom in. And yeah, it does look a little slow for a Sonic game.

  • This could use a lot of speeding up, bigger levels, etc. But still, looks good so far.

  • it looks boring and slow but... it's just an early version! NOTE THAT IS AN EARLY VERSION!! God!

  • Can you fall off?

  • No. You can't even control Sonic, because that is not a game. It's just a CGI video made to look like a game that Chris Senn made on his Amiga 3000 in order to convince Sega that Sonic in 3D would work.

  • what ppl dont realize its 3d ot 2d

plus its a hell better than another current 3d sonic game

  • Looks like the cancelled sonic mars for 32x

  • It is.

Sonic Mars for the 32X was going to be made into sonic extreme, which sega was retarded about and canceled.

  • Okay look... Sonic Mars was based off the Satam series or the comics. When I was on sonic retro I found a article about it and it had a screenshot of what looked like a boss battle with this gameplay.

  • Hes pretty slow here.

  • LOoks good for the 32X but is slow as hell.

  • wow it would look awesome on sega 32x where no good game has never been before

  • i liked knux chaotix

  • knuckles chaotix!

  • He's slow even on the loop-de-loop!!! How do you scale a full loop at 5mph? How I ask you!

  • with spiked, magnetic shoes and a VERY sticky metal loop. that's how.

  • Wow this is awesome... it would be fun to see this on 32X

Where did the music come from ? its guite good...

  • Where is the speed?

  • The music is from Sonic CD. The level its on escapes me though

  • bad future of stardust speedway of US Sonic CD

  • Sonic CD Stardust Speedway

  • Wow. I can't belive this is the first time I'm seeing this. I used to follow Sonic really closely but my love for him has died along with the Dreamcast.

  • They should of sold it anyway I would of bought it. :D

  • ... A pitch demo?

Like, when a developer is trying to sell a project to a publisher?

  • Yeah. They want to make sure they get 3D sonic right. They wouldn't want to screw it up so bad that it would be cursed for 10 years.

  • Ba-zing!

  • Gotta love the irony there. What else would you call this franchise, I mean SA 1 & 2 were kinda fun and we did get Rush, but for the most part this franchise is screwed.

  • @agoaj

I see what you did there.

  • @agoaj Yeah but those 'cursed' years were thanks to the work of Yuji Naka.

  • @agoaj Haha. 'oops'.

  • @agoaj

Everyone thought Sonic R was cursed, and it was an AWSOME game!

But this comment is kinda irrelevant.

  • The reason i can suggest this was the 32x version is simple, look at the first playground scene, you can see the reflection of the game map in the background, this also occured in Star Wars game when your fighting the imperial fleet, however this made the game map limitless...

  • I was a little dissaponinted what no proper 3D version of sonic was ever released for the 32X, if it was, and only as good as the video above, i recon at the time people would have brought it! Sega should have taken the chance and released the game, even if to them it was concidered 'poor gameplay'.

  • To be Honest, ive read this all though, this is a Tech Demo used to premote Sonic Mars/Xtreme (what it was later called) for the 32X console. If it was rendered using 32X hardware this is VERY GOOD, because at the time anyting in 3D was concidered well in advance.

  • This isn't real, Sonic X-treme looked different, and this music is from the U.S. sound track of Sonic CD. It's Stardust speedway bad future.

  • Well, given that "Sonic X-treme"'s development initially started on the Megadrive and then the 32X, it's perfectly possible that this was significantly older than the other Sonic X-treme videos available. Also, this is a tech demo - basically an early animation designed to pitch the idea to the executives, who'll then give the go-ahead for an actual game to be made. And on such a tech demo thrown together to show the bosses, reusing Sonic CD music isn't really unbelievable.

  • wow this is so cool how they used the stardust speedway bad future BGM US on it

  • Man, I use to be so "in the know" with the Sonic beta research scene, but not much anymore. I would've eaten this video up back in 2005 or so.

  • these 3D sprites were made for the old 32X version of Sonic Xtreme, known as Mars on the 32X. due to the game needing more graphics to bring sonic into the 3D generation, they rebuilt the game on the Saturn, which was also scrapped because it ran on the Nights concept engine, which made Sega of Japan mad. it was rebuilt AGAIN for PC using fish-eye engine. the game was soon after the Death Egg level's completion, SCRAPPED!

  • SEGA Japan forced the STI to make this for the Saturn, the PC version had nothing to do with SEGA Japan, they never saw it.

  • Sega was in a confusing mess back then. it pisses me off that the company would let itself be put into a blender like that...

  • Yeah, it is stupid for a company to sudden explode like SEGA did, but things happened.

  • Sonic is a 3D rendered sprite in this demo. I doubt the hardware supported texturing polygons.

  • At the end you can see textures on Sonic's face.

  • Those are not textures. Remember that this is just a CGI video, not a game. And the "textures" on Sonic's face are just details which were added with a 2D graphics program, retouching the video frame by frame.

  • @DevilMaster This is Pre rendered?

  • Actually yeah, since this looks like it was a 32X Demo, the 32X was fully capable of using textures, I've played games that actually use Textures. Darxide, for one. Didn't play very well but when it came to graphics, it was on top.

  • Doesn't look very fun. Since when was Sonic supposed to move so slow?

  • Whats the music? It is really good!

  • Its Stardust speedway from Sonic CD, i think. Apparently it inspired Chris Senn when he made this.

  • Most tech demos do, it was just to showcase an idea.

  • It actually doesn't look as cool as Xtreme, perhaps because of the sprites. But it looks as a blast of fun. I'd actually pay a freaking lot to get to play both.

  • Its is and it isn't.. i think those sprites were Chris testing sprites...

  • Perhaps. I also heard that Sonic Mars (Mars = 32X) was a split project Senn had before starting on X-treme.

  • Mars became or was going to be X-treme, but X-tremes development started back in 1994.. Man, this is to confusing, But X-treme did start out of the Megadrive/Genesis.

  • I readed about it little ago. Anything about the very first version or concept?

  • Yeah, i got a picture from Chris Senns website of the Genesis version, i'll send you the link when i find it again.

  • it was going to be based on satam the cartoon show but the genesis couldnt handle it

  • No, your talking about Sonic Mars, which is a different game to this, The Genesis was able to run Sonic Mars but they dropped the project in favour to Sonic X-treme.

  • oh I read somewhere that it couldnt I wonder how much the completed version of sonic mars would go for on ebay maybe we should all email sega to make this on the vc I know Id buy for xbx lv VC

  • Nah, SEGA wanted this on the 32X that why it changed, Also it was only a video to show what it could be, there was nothing made. Also SEGA wouldn't listen to you, they'd only talk to you if you had money.

  • Based n the satam series thats interesting but hasnt there already been a game thats based in satam for visiual boy. Just to let you know that the game is called Sonic Epoch.

  • I know its fucking hard as hell cant beat the first boss

  • Actually there appears to not be a single sprite in this whole video. Sprites are animated 2D graphical objects in a game. Everything in this demo was obviously fully rotating and shown from every conceivable angle. This video shows full 3d graphics on everything. In the X-treme tech demos there are sprites everywhere and they look like crap. Sonic himself appeared as a 2d sprite in a "3d" sonic adventure in X-treme. I really wish Sega did release X-treme, anything but Xbox!

  • Although it doesn't look it, but All the enermies and Sonic, they are sprites. Chris did a brilliant job on them.

  • @ exactly 00:34-00:37, the camera not only zooms but tilts a lot. Do you see anything morphing, looking displaced at all? The test for 3D space is just that, nothing morphs out of proportion and it moves synchronized perfectly in every frame at all angles. @00:38 A big polygonal block finger for idiot #1 who is either: A)bummed about the money they gave to Sega who then wasted it needlessly B)Hears random things and blindly trusts bad sources over their own eyesight C)Just loves arguing! D) dumb

  • Actually, whilst making this demo, they were in trouble, this was made back in 1993/1994, 2 to 3 years before all the trouble they suffered. Also Sonic is not made of polygons, he's just made out of very good looking sprites. But i see what you mean about the tilting camera.

  • I respond with very obvious evidence supporting my claim and you respond with something you read on a web page, totally misinterpreted, and just hold blindly true as fact even though you don't understand every word of the claim. Most demos of Sonic X-treme are VERY obviously using all sprites for Sonic and enemies (those were all of the Saturn based demos). This demo ran on a different console (genesis) and with a totally different graphics engine than the Saturn version, and used all polygons.

  • My comment was typed out wrong, i'm not really concentrating this morning, also this demo is off the 32X version or so Chris claims. Also its not most demos, its all demos. SEGA beleived that they could make Sonic X-treme alot faster if they used Sprites.. obviously their idea was way off.

  • But to be honest, i have no intention of caring for the 32X version, i'm more interested in the Saturn version, which has not yet made an appearance.

  • where do you get this game?

  • awosme...where can i download it :)?

  • You can't,

  • i already did :)

  • You have the video or the actual game?

  • i have this game...not the full game onli this demo

  • Lol, what bollocks. This was never made into a game as far as i know. Its just a video/demo.

  • why are we arguing in 2 different vids?look at the other for my response to your comment

  • I have no idea, But the pitch demo was never playable.

  • this one isnt..but theres a remix version of this demo on a site that i think its called dobberman software

  • Sonic X-treme remix, Thats just a Sonic Fan game using X-treme sprites. It has nothing to do with the actual Sonic X-treme game.

  • thats what i have been trying to fucking tell you for the last couple of days!

  • You could of told me it was Sonic X-treme remix you retard, You kept making me think you thought it was the actual game.

  • where do u get it?

  • oh, actually i think what this was a real game, because this video looks much hard to animate (i think).

  • I always thought that. But apparently it isn't

  • This is the 32x version, this was as well come out with the Saturn version and the PC one.

  • This isn't, its just a concept video. Or a test level. I though it was the 32X version.

  • Let's settle that this is the concept video for the 32X.

  • Its not..

  • Well Sonic X-Treme first started out as a project to be released on the 32X from what i've read. Maybe if Sonic was made 3D here maybe we wouldn't see Sega trying to experiment with 3D Sonic now.

  • Wrong, it was Genesis/Megadrive.

  • Chris Senn is a programming genius, if you ask me, Sonic needs him to make a decent new game, nobody has shown as much devotion as he has.

  • true dat. The fall of Sonic X-treme is one of the most interesting things of gaming lore I can think of, and hearing how much Senn did for it makes me sad that it was never released. This here though? I've never seen the 32X demo for X-treme before. Even more interesting...

  • That is the 32x version.

  • No, it's not, thats a concept video.

  • Is it? Wow i can't remember posting that lol.

  • sega 32x

it was going to be for that system also

  • looks like fun!

  • It's not ment to look nice, It's a freakin' PITCH demo.

  • the graphics ARE crap.

  • They're fucking awesome to me.

  • Its pretty good for it to be run on a 16-bit console. (Megadrive/Genesis)

  • It's not meant to. It's a pitch demo, not an OMG LETZ SHOW OF THE BEST GRAPHICS EVAR demo.

  • Ah, Stardust Speedway.... Mmmmm.

  • sega cd?

  • No, this is extremely EARLY in development. I cant see how anyone can say the graphics are crap if its a tech demo.

  • the graffix are well crap lol doesnt beat the segas sonic and sonic 2 lol

  • Considering it's only 32-bit, I wouldn't imagine, but that still doesn't make it a crap game (even though we never got a chance to play it). This must've been very far in Xtreme's development, as Sonic's fully 3D, and not just a bunch of sprites in a 3D environment.

  • if you see the Tech Demos for the 32X, its far beyond capable for this game. Just that it was plagued by the Flat Cables, There is a 32x Repair Guide at Sonic Cult (Caution not meant for eyes under age of 15.)
