it became profitable to buy insurance policies with no deductible (no out of pocket expenses) everybody uses insurance not for catastrophic problems, but for general checkups, minor problems that really could be paid out of pocket. Insurance prices went up. In 50s-70s it was possible to have a plan with first $500 deductible that would cover you up to 50K and it cost $25 a year! And prices were going down, not up. Of-course the government stepped in (Nixon) and the thing went to hell.
Income tax law is complex, government hides the way the taxes are collected and it almost is certain that there are errors in everyone's return. Returns make it possible to collect private information on people and to make anyone into a criminal - easily. Do you know if your return is 100% correct? You have to sign it to say that under law.
Income tax also has all these deductibles for debt. So the incentives are set to work less and to take more debt, for example mortgage interest.
As the standard of living started to slip, the richer people started getting into the government to control what they were paying into the tax pool, obviously income taxes went down.
However from cause - effect: big income tax -> better economy.
Better economy was a consequence of USA profiting from war and from post-war era, just the way it happened, lucky for US.
Income taxes in themselves are the wrong taxes, they tax work, they tax productivity and remove incentives for work.
US government/corporations were living off the benefits of the WWII for decades, plus there was USSR to be concerned about, and that brought the government and private corporations giga-tons of money, there was a gigantic industrial war machine chugging away.
USSR fell apart, the borders opened for foreign cheap labor. Oopsy daisy, what do you know. Bombs are not really the best bought products! People want other stuff. USA created more wars just to try and continue with this nonsense.
I know that Cenk likes to believe that the best economy for the middle class in the USA was during the 50s-70s because the income tax was so huge.
He completely mixes cause and effect.
Income taxes were so huge as result from a war imposed increase (unconstitutional, obviously).
But the reason why economy was 'good', was because the US was not damaged by war, Pearl Harbor notwithstanding. US benefited from war, US corporations benefited more than anyone else.
You cannot short a companies that are running the FCC, SEC. They know every short on the market. If you short one they will either open a new company and restart or combine with another making them more powerful.
I agree with most of it; however, I wouldn't attribute taxing income to "destroying production." Nor would I make such a black/white statement as
"government evil - free market is cure."
Taxation of income decreases competition. This is America, people don't stop buying, they just stop buying riskily and in variety. As long as people buy, there will always be jobs and money for most. However, the number of poor will increase, it will never go close to half.
@christmasdnc I reinvest the money I make in my business to do more business. Borrowing money is hard and expensive, I rather use my money that I earn to invest again, but the government wants that money Now, before I spend it on Myself, it wants it so that I cannot spend it on my Work.
@PostBush Of-course Fed prints money. They produce nothing but zeros at the end of a one. They print cash. They are a quasi government quasi private institution with no oversight and they set up the interest rates, do under-the-table bailouts, set economic policy and they do not want your government or you to know the details of their dealing.
Banks make money by taking free money given to them by Fed and buying long term T-Bills. Makes no sense and is corrupt.
Blame the banks not the govt. If you want to stop the drug wars concentrate on the Drug Lord not your small time drug dealers.
The Fed is run by banks that have 50% of world currency. They can always find another willing politician. The banks need to be removed from our system.
@PostBush Banks to be removed from system? So you are saying that if I want to open a private bank and allow individual/businesses to store their cash and take loans this should be illegal? Yeah, you make sense.
No, that's a failing luxury asset capacity. Obviously ALL categories will suffer, production included; however, it is no where near a specific or direct cause.
Also, if you didn't get my response to free market, I'll repeat it for you.
As to the blanket free market statement, that's just obvious. You need balance, nothing in life was ever solved from one action and it never will be
Simple consumption taxes means that tax increases are transparent and visible, which is great, because it is politically unpopular to raise taxes.
Also income tax is invasive, there is no privacy. Income tax return requires you to submit to the government every aspect of your life, what business is it of a politician? They control the population this way. Obedience, that's the word.
Government that is free to tax income, free to print money, gives money to friends for bribes = corruption.
Taxing consumption means that there is less tax money collected of-course by the government, but that is a GOOD thing. It means government has to choose what to waste/spend money on and it is more transparent and clear to the people when taxes go up, because it is so simple.
To have income tax means to have armies of accountants working on tax returns - this is a Waste, those people could be doing something more productive, more useful.
The argument is that it is unfair that people with money do not pay tax on the income, but what is unfair about it if they are Not using it for pleasure? You buy something for yourself - sure, tax the purchase.
You work and get taxed for work?! That means government wants to discourage people from working! This makes no sense.
In a Free Market, government is not free to print money and prop up the preferred monopolies, government does not tax income but taxes consumption.
Government amends the Constitution to introduce Income tax, which taxes capital, that people can use to do only 2 things: 1. Spend it. 2. Reinvest and grow it.
If you tax the spending, you are taxing the pleasure people get from using the capital, makes sense.
If you do not tax income, you allow people to reinvest in ways they see fit, makes sense. Reinvestment is not 'pleasure' it's work.
By taxing income, you tax work and not leisure, it makes no sense to tax work.
Once minimum wage is set, it prices certain people out of job markets. Jobs disappear, sure they are low level jobs, but in competition between high wages and capital what you get is just more automation or simply disappearing jobs.
Nobody is bagging your food and bringing it to you car, nobody answers phones but machines, nobody checks your oil, wipes the windshield at a gas pump.
Opportunities disappear. No more apprentices, who can learn a trade from a pro, because of minimum wage laws.
Tiny url 26w37mo - challenge to Alan Greenspan to debate about capitalism and his actions to discredit it as part of central government. This really should be done as part of this financial reform.
@romanmir01 The free market has always been an unmitigated disaster. That's why it is regulated. The idiocy of suggesting the same mistakes are made yet again shows an ignorance of history that is staggering. Laissez faire capitalism has caused rollercoaster boom bust cycles and genocides (look it up) and the current financial meltdown shows what happens when you set bankers free to do what they want. They fucking rob everybody. Are you completely brainwashed or do you just ignore facts?
@nilbud Furthermore, stating that free market has always been 'an unmitigated disaster' reeks of a brainwashed individual, who does not understand how the quality of life of the entire population of this planet.
Wherever and whenever free market takes place, it pushes forward the progress not because of but despite regulations that are strangling it.
History shows that boom and bust cycles cause minor recessions that last months to a year, but government regulation causes depression. History.
@nilbud Current financial meltdown shows what happens when Government gets their hands on a printing press and their lips on the balls and asses of private firms.
This is not corporate world that requires regulation, it is the government, that needs to be reigned in and cleaned of corruption.
Simple example: all the regulation and yet SEC does not do anything about Madoff scam even after Markopolos gave them the man on a silver platter. Years of doing nothing while having all the ability.
Hear what Grayson says? The Fed Prints money and gives the cash to their friends.
Take away government's ability to print money. Take away their ability to take the value of your money away.
One way to do this personally is to move from USD to gold/silver/energy dividend paaying stocks/bonds, foreign manufacturers/food producers paying dividends.
With all due respect to Representative Grayson, it turns out now that he was wrong about the Republicans' health care plan. Sue Lowden has finally told us what the real Republican health care plan is -- "bring a chicken to the doctor!"
I am as big a fan of Alan Grayson as anybody here, but I do wish TYT had interviewed him after the health care bill so that he could justify his vote.
Alan Grayson is one of my few modern day heros, although no one is a hero, he seems to be filling the slot nicely so far however, in his political aspirations.
I like Grayson, but I lost a little respect for him when I found out that he signed a neocon-drafted letter to President Obama admonishing him for scolding Netanyahu on the new settlements in Israel. Grayson's cool, but he's not as liberal as Dennis Kucinich or Pete Stark.
That was awesome. Grayson deflected about Geithner at the beginning then Cenk trapped him into making a clear stand on his thoughts about Geithner. That is what I call an interview. You're the man Cenk.
Personal Perspective you're living in a fantasy world lol Grayson...Grayson is the same idiot gaining lobbyist contributions from Unions and other minority groups who were for a public option to control more tax payer money..
Is there still anti intellectualism in america? Grayson if anyone represents what we should strive for - the smart (Harvard undergrad; Harvard Law) and courageous to be representing us don't we? He's wealthy but has the citizen's interest as his priority. Shouldn't we want a smart Harvard lawyer nailing Wall Street CEO's in the room than someone like Palin or a Republican puppet who not only doesn't know what questions to ask but asks questions in defense of Wall St against us?
@personalperspective Grayson's the man, and yes it is saddening that here in America we prefer "common sense" people with no understanding of what's going on. We also deny evolution, climate change, and policies that make sense according to credibly-studied facts.

@classicallady Hehe, thanks for the support. I think that Americans, on the whole, received very public education here, but I blame the corporate-owned, dysfunctional media for all the wrong things they learn and cling to as adults. If only we had real news stations and reporters who.... you know... INVESTIGATED issues instead of reporting what makes the most social noise or doing reports where 1/2 the time is given to true experts and the other 1/2 given to corporate shills.
@classicallady I meant, I have just heard...Typo...LOL You are more then welcome and your words are right on the money! The same reason I can't understand why the media still give Scary Failing time....She belongs to a comic book and nothing else. Took a look at NewYork Times and they state she quit Alaska for the simple reason she knew she could pock way more money than being a lousy pseudo governor.Another media whore.

Liddy should face the consequences of those 10 or 20 people responsible for the 100's of billions of dollars until he turns over the names. That should smack him upside the head and flip him 180 in an instant.
America would automatically become the best country in the world if Grayson was elected prez. I heavily endorse a Grayson/Uyger 2016 ticket.
Just how awesome would that be exactly you ask? Well, the current methods of calculating awesomeness would have to be radically overhauled and passed through legislation in order for us to find out... although I fear even with this it'd still be well beyond the realm of human understanding.

In a Free Market economy prices fall.
Prices fall due to increased efficiencies.
Prices fall for things that are produced.
People can buy more with lower prices.
This was True during the Industrial revolution, prices fell due to increased efficiencies of the market. This was the Victory of Free Market.
However factory work is hard and often dangerous and owners often do not care.
There come unions, there comes government. Wages go up but lower skilled workers are priced out of the market.

@EcrossH And I've just oil rigs here do not have to install a safe valve to avoid this insane, evil spill of oil on the Gulf of Mexico. Keep going to the rightest rathugs party and soon enough this country will be so backwards. Prime time comment hereEcross. Unfortunately, there are no lack of cretins, illiterate, ignoramus ppl incited by the very same charachteristics I mentioned above - check teatards. xx

6:52 refusal to turn over emails no memos and no names 7:22 ? That's precisely why we've got problems.

I really like how this finished in the end. No dodge, he called it on Geithner and on Afghanistan. Excellent points.

@LordNapalm Except when he dodges questions that don't favour the democrats...
I know he'll catch crap if he says anything about corrupt dems, but it's still annoying to listen to him dodge.
