  • is that Pontieu?

  • j.m. and shankar remind me of django reinhart and stefan grappelli. the styles are very different, but they both share a mastery and brilliance that is very rare. if i had a time machine i'd take shakti's rhythm section back to the quintet...

  • Never been any doubt in my mind that this was a high point of 20th Century music. Still love it as much as when I first heard it in the late 70s.

  • JM is just siiiiick on anything with strings. Even by today's standards he's still inhumanly fast and accurater

  • @chillichomper I guess what I've always like about him is that his style , stop start jerky playing is really hard to do . Most aternate pickers like Yngwei, Shawn lane, Paul gilbert, you name them can't play like this.

How do you go from 100 mph to 2 mph and then back at 100 ????!!!!! and all very very percussive and adding to the overall rhythm of the song. I think this was JM at his technical height.

  • Its amazing how the two drummers are like one person when they play. There are very few if any guitarists that could ever duplicate what John does here.,,Really outstanding musicians all of them!!!

  • This is an interesting attempt of a European musician to play guitar as a sitar and more within the rules of classical Indian music. John "Mahavishnu" McLaughlin belongs in my opinion to the top ten guitarists ever.

  • awesome percussion, f..k!

I bought the first Shakti album, gotta go hunt down the first tune, incredible soli playing

  • Hi thanks my friend

  • bhanchod awaz nai arai. Sound is so fckin low dude.

  • 6 people are morons.

  • test

  • “When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”

  • I appreciate what you do with writing your books and whatnot (I have a copy) : The topic and subject matter is very interesting (John McLaughlin), your writing is acceptable , etc.. but shit man - are you starving for $ or something? I see you spam soliciting you own shit all over the internet....c'mon man - the only thing that's going to come of that is people will start to lose whatever respect they might have had for you....good luck.

  • @colacoca355 I appreciate you have one of my books. Over the years I have learned the vast majority of John McLaughlin Youtube viewers appreciate the information, including several emailers this morning who thanked me for it. Sure, you are the second person in about 6 years who has complained. When you write books about fusion music, the mainstream is not open to you... you use what promotional opportunities exist and Youtube is certainly one of them. Thanks.

  • @walterkolosky1 Your are right man, you should be the least of my worries with the preponderance of lowlifes, all over various social media, YouTube, forums, even fucking Wikipedia, who at the end of the day are nothing more than salesmen. .. It just caught me off guard to see such solicitation in "my world" when I do what I can to avoid such things. ..And I really did it mean it when I said good luck...

  • And award for "greatest guitarist EVER" goes to...

  • he is the master

  • Thoroughly impressive!!

  • You've got to intuitively know what they're on about here in order to enjoy this.

  • O fuck is that Viku Vinayakam on ghatam?

  • @legitfreek YES!!! =D

  • Weird guitar!!!!

  • This is one of the coolest records ever.

  • It's weird to see him play an "uplugged" performance with a steel string. I guess for this group the steel strings sound better suited than nylon.

  • @fridun007 he always yoused steel strings with Shakti. with the Guitar Trio he used nylon ones.

  • @fabianidhesona Yes, probably because it gives it more of a 'SITAR' sound.

  • @fridun007 It's better suited because this kind of string bending is tough on a nylon-string - the tension is too low.

  • @namtil I think that the guitar has steel strings because the sound he looks for need steel strings like in the sitar

  • this is beast!

  • Please upload more of this performance!! This video is too brief. Long music should be allowed to play long. If you have 15 minutes of video, please use the time available. We would all appreciate it. Thank you!!

  • What year was this?

  • What are the drone string's tuning? It resembles a chord you might hear behind

Mr.Rogers. I don't have any intervalic construction chops but what I hear is an in-

triguing Jazz chord suspended by a note or two that are distinctly from Indian

    modal sensibilitys.

  • Im still tripping!

  • one word, the berst!

  • @jordipuppo That's 2 words

  • I no i commented a month ago but i just wanted to say thanx and JM IS THE SICKEST PLAYER EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I feel this vid has changed my life.iv listened to JM for many yrs but im by no mean an authority.this music appears to be in E so i can try to mess around with it in a primitive way.there a million licks/songs in this song.thanx again

  • John plays with precision and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic intelligence.

  • 5 people are morons.

  • @harpua971 One more just joined their list

  • His statement of the melody at the beginning is just breathtakingly gorgeous. His ability to vary his picking dynamics at that speed are really extraordinary.

  • JM. THE SICKEST PLAYER EVER. THANX A MILLION FOR THIS VID.

  • Are you kidding me? Where is the end of this song? The video has only 4:26. :-( Well, I know, that it is focused just on the John Mclaughlins solo, but a song is a nwhole. So please upload the entire song Joy. And I think, that it will be Not only for me. Vivat John "Mahavishnu" Mclaughlin!

  • Soon enough, it will be Justin who? John has not and will not be forgotten.

  • In a world where everyone has heard of Justin Bieber and no body knows who John McLaughlin or Zakir Hussain are, something is very, very wrong.

  • 5 people haven't tried LSD

  • @xxwantedxx Five people have a poorly developed or damaged Temporal Lobe. Whats not to like? Truly original, truly inspired, this is stratospheric, approaching DIVINITY!

  • For my money, there isn't a more exacting guitar player. When I think 'virtuoso', I think of John McLaughlin.

  • My brother and I managed to catch Shakti at one of the clubs in Hollywood, either the Troubadour or the Roxy, can't remember, but GOD what a performance!

  • @BlixsemFleerSneuw Lucky fucker.

  • damn insane. Im surprised the tablas are being played with more of a western rhythm. Theres no khali (the skipped beat) in the drum pattern.

Regardless, some awesome fusion, and john plays some crazy guitar

  • @llebnodnarb look look ; who is playing tabla? The ZAKIR HUSSAIN

  • Any one knows what is the guitar tunning? thanks

  • I just smoked some white widow and this is tripping me out!!

  • @stimeeee

    As well it should.

But do go easy with the mind altering goodies.

Sorry. I couldn't resist a little middle aged preaching.

  • @stimeeee

    cheers man

  • @DingerBGood - I agree with you totally though sadly I haven't heard the album for years (back in the old days when you played records and bought needles for your gramophone)

  • If you like Mclaughlin, Check his work on Miles Davis' Album "Tribute to Jack Johnson" (the Boxer, not the soul-pop singer). This album is almost more Mclaughlin than Miles...Think rock'roll-modal-bop.

  • cool guitar

  • Seen him at Belfast festival yrs ago great drummer he had

  • does anyone know what type of guitar that is? help would be greatly appreciated

  • Kinda sad cuz Shankar is just this mind blowing violinist. I have never heard a guy so unique in their approach to the violin. And that's Zakir Hussein in there. Like a kick in the gut at how short this video is.

  • How can some one post this half cut in the middle ? it just can't be with such music and such musicians...

  • I'm puzzled why you cut Shankar off. All this JM raving- love him, but in case you didn't notice Shankar and Zakir Hussein are worth hearing, too. Shankar is the only guy in the world that plays a double violin. He's a monster. Why did you do it?

  • @Upritebass ... Thanks, oddly enough, I was listening to JM and learning to play bass before I started to listen to the decent bass players from that era like Alfonso Johnson, Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Jeff Berlin, Percy Jones, etc. My current job interferes with my playing out but hope to return to more gigging a some point in the future. John is an inspiration to ALL musicians, not just guitarists ! he has to be one of the most dedicated artists in music. Keep thumpin' !

  • @Upritebass ... He was also the leader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, so check out those albums. One of my favorite albums is called "My Goals Beyond", an early acoustic album of his. He is also featured as guitarist on "In a Silent Way" , "Live-Evil" and "Big Fun" which are 3 other Miles Davis Albums worth having. ps ... I play electric bass myself.

  • @videocanone I will do that! Thanks! :-) I play the electric too, I have a double bass but it's a real pain in the butt to carry around because the neck sticks out my car window and it almost hits people when I'm turning corners. For travel, I prefer electric upright.

I bet you're a very good bass player being influenced by such good music,

  • 3:50

  • John McLaughlin is the one guitarist that most current professionals will attest to as having had a profound influence on them and having also dramatically broadened what others now see as the true possilbilities of the guitar. And he has done this in mulitple styles of playing on various types of guitars, and had a big hand in creating and defining Jazz-Rock Fusion music. Everyone from Allan Holdsworth to Eddie Van Halen has acknoledged this. None better and only one ! Accept no substitutes !

  • @videocanone AHHH! I love this guy! I have GOTS to hear more of his stuff! I know him from 1 solo album and albums by the Guitar trio (?) with Al DiMeola and Paco DeLucia. Oh yeah, also from a cut from Miles Davis's Bitches Brew album.

  • @Upritebass TAKE SHAKTI´S "A HANDFUL OF BEAUTY" AND CHECK OUT HIS SOLOS ON "LADY L" AND "ISIS", AFTHER THAT YOU´LL SEE WHAT IS JOHN MCLAUGHLIN!

  • @llafutaal and of course mahavishnu orchestra

  • @llafutaal Thanks Buddy. :-)

  • @Upritebass Listen to some Mahavishnu Orchestra the early stuff or all of it. It's all good.

  • @Upritebass check out Mavahushnu Project

  • man this is awesome

  • John M and his artist have opened new worlds for us all. The great traditions of classical indian ragas and jazz improvisation live for future generations. Who will carry the standard when John passes from this earth?

  • I've never heard a guitar sound so much like a sitar. Very cool.

  • omg, lol ;D my names shaktijoy:) <3

  • they are called sympathetic strings. tuned to the raga.

  • Does anyone know where you might get a guitar with drone strings? Any popular luthiers you could recommend, I really like this guitar mclaughlins playing, also Fareed Haque of Garaj Mahal plays a acoustic with drone strings very well.

  • @skunkfunk89

the strings are sympathetic not drone, they are generally not plucked but vibrate on their own in sympathy, a guitar with drone strings would be more like a harp guitar, you know one of those turn of the century deals, i think thats a custom gibson made for mclauglin specially

fyi, drone run off the same bridge and run the same length as the normal strings, and sympathetics have their own bridge and usually are not the same length,

  • sympathetic or drone, it doesn't matter how you call it, it is the same. Musicologists (in Germany) call it "aliquot strings"

  • @skunkfunk89 you could use a double neck w/ 12 string on one side...

tune the 12 string to whatever mode..

keep the selector sw. in the middle pos.

    sounds amazing...

  • Abe Wechter used to do custom builds,.but no more..Mc laughlins were 10 K ,yes ,10 thousand USD. How do i know? cuz I have a similar Shakti version.

  • @skunkfunk89

I believe the acoustic Shakti guitar was built by Abraham Wechter when he was with Gibson. His company is Wechter Guitars, in Paw Paw, Michigan.

  • well its not a beat its called teental .. it consists of 16 beats .. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, wave ,10 ,11 ,12 ,13 ,14 15 16 .... you just got more bars to play with thats all .. try to keep your hand clapping the beat as that tabla will throw in micro beats which may throw you off tempo . just clap the tempo and you will recur in 16 beats eventualy ... good luck . if want a nice guide .. good john mclaughlin konokol .. dj

  • the beat is called teental .. its a 16 beat cycle ...

  • What is the counting in this song? I cannot figure it out. Whenever I think I have it the music takes an unpredictable turn.

  • I saw Shakti with Larry Coryell in Chicago at Park West in 1979 or so. Took 7 of my "older" relatives. I was mezmorized. They Hated it!!!.

  • Getting those sitar-like bends on a guitar is almost unbelievable. Wow.

  • Scalloped fretboard Custom Wechter,.,I have one without the drone strings,.thats how you do it,,,

  • The first time I heard this it blew my mind. So wish I had Mclaughlin's hands.

  • too bad we are missing out on L Shakar's solo. I just saw Zakir Hussain and he is amazing.

  • out of the billions it is difficult to be unique, mr mclaughlin has done it.

  • @tomosoos I can play any guitarist style with no problem but Metheny and Mclaughlin. Their styles are so unique its hard to play lol.

  • I still can't believe how John can keep up with Hussain.

  • THIS GUYS IS SO SAVAGE AT MUSIC

  • U R SO CAPS AT POSTING

  • does scalloped fret make sliding easier aswell?

  • Just want to add on my answer to the question Does anyone know what video this is

from? Joy is from the second Shakti album.

If you hear that version on a good playback machine you will be knocked out. It is Beyond

Superior. It's extraordinaire. Please listen to

it. You don't know what your missing. Who cares about the video! It's the music you want!! Please do yourself a favor. It's an

    inspired Masterpiece. jdm.

  • I agree. I love listening to "Joy" from the second shakti album. I crank it loud and listen to it all the way through - awesome!

  • The sound is average but what virtuoso playing as usual from John. His clear articulation is legendary.

  • @En3usiast The complement is great, but I'd like to remind you this is a youtube video. The sound here has little resemblance to the actual sound when they played it.

  • HEAVENLY!

  • I have this on vinyl. I didn't know there was a video. Thanks

  • Hi there, there are 2 songs from the album "Maria Fumaca".1 Song from Saci -Perere,album and Central do Brasil was never recorded by them. maybe it will one day...

  • Does anyone know what video this is from?

  • This video is from the DVD called "the way of beauty" by SHAKTI. It´s a chapter of the wonderful dvd about SHAKTI.

  • Yes I do . is from a Brazilian TV Show . This is the only copy that we hold the rights. i had to fix to be able to play on the internet. Also the sound was fixed and this is the best that it can get. There is an interview that is part of this Show and i'm m working on fixing and tranlating to put here for you guys. Thanks for droping by,best

  • Yes, it is from the second Shakti album and it

    is fantastic. jdm

  • i want the full version !!!!! :D it's such a pleasure...

  • aMaZinG.....tHanKs foR sHaRinG tHis ViDeo

  • A trememdous group of musicians playing inspired music. McL's connection to Vikku and Zakhir is like telepathy, just like his connection to Cobham in MO.

  • The way johns transfers this kind of music on his guitar is awesome, i have never seen something like this before.

never thought a guitar could really sound like this

    AMAZING

  • play the piece "isis" or "lady l" of A HANDFUL OF BEAUTY, you´ll find a better acoustic sound of John´s guitar.

  • @SOIBand Sorry to say.. but this is a boring piece of music and absolutely not that difficult to play.. He uses electric guitar strings.. to make them easy to bend, it also gives this specific sound to this Modified country And western Guitar .. Playing fast is not a form of art.

  • Comment removed

  • @Pan3405 i guess you dont get the tonal point , the way he plays the quarter tones is amazing. and just because you cant handle some fast notes as a melody dont means hes "just" playing fast. You ears are not trained enough im sorry, thats the point.

The tones sources out of his fingers, the sound of the strings is almost

    meaningless compared to this sorry.

And just for your info he plays 13-52 strings and thats badass

  • @SOIBand In India there are a lot of string hero's playing the same way as he does.. no big deal!!

  • @Pan3405 ever tryed playing a guitar like john? so much practice is necessary to play as precise and well intonated as john.I am sure there are many people who can play as good as john but thats not the point ^^ playing this good is a big deal you know ^^i am playing for almost 9 years by myself and its a big deal ^^

  • @SOIBand I play since 1974... but that's not the point..the point is that John repeats the same trick over and over again.. it's boring how swift he might be..

  • @Pan3405 You are beyond stupid-why don't you try to name the one "trick" you refer to that you claim John endlessly repeats. The real trick to JM's playing is massive talent, unending inspiration, and incredible amounts of focused effort. Anyone who listens with an open mind will find your statement laughable. If you can't dig what JM lays down, why do you waste your time here-you dumb turd from a troll's ass?

  • @Gregorypeckory Your comment show the world (!) that you are an ignorant fan.. who refuses to accept other points of views.. Greggypegyy.. there are thousands of people who can play like John and even much better!!! he is a product of the fifties..sixties..and it shows!

  • @Pan3405 Thousands of people that can play much better than JM? Where are they? Every one of your posts announces that you're an idiot. Fortunately, John doesn't need you-he has a wide international audience that knows when they hear something great. Why are you still here-why not watch one of the thousands of better guitarists? Idiot.

  • @Gregorypeckory Quoting is not your strongest part..read my comment again..And for now.. stop reacting.. because now I have to watch and hear again the awful attempts of JM to machinegun music!

  • @Pan3405 Where do you see quotes? I was paraphrasing, but if you want the quote: "there are thousands of people who can play like John and even much better". Again-where are they you dumb fuck, and when will you name the "one trick" you accuse him of repeating over and over? John's a perpetual learner, and what you're saying is beyond laughable. What's pathetic is that you keep trolling, when you could just listen to something you like-if there is anything.

  • @Pan3405 "Your comment show the world"? If that's true, why is everyone here trashing you, instead of me. BTW, you might want to learn how to string words together to better express your moronic opinions. Or better yet, just say nothing.

  • @Gregorypeckory GreggyPeggy.. blow your pipe and stay convinced that JM is the best if that makes you happy!! Asshole!

  • @Pan3405 Again-give names. I know you can't, since you're talking out your ass. Actually there are many great Indian musicians, and John collaborates with some of the greats like Debashish Bhattacharya. Their styles are quite complementary but they sound nothing like each other. In all your posts you have yet to specifically back up anything you've said, because you can't-you're just full of shit and anyone can see that.

  • @Gregorypeckory Don't pretend You're an intellectual, because You're not! And GreggyPeggy.. Perhaps You could try to learn dutch to communicate on an equal level! I bet You don't have enough brains to learn that language morron!

  • @Pan3405 Still waiting for substance and specifics-though I know you can't produce them. Your insults and goofy assertions are nothing but childish drivel. Goodbye troll-I hope you find the therapy you so desperately need.

  • @Gregorypeckory You're boring me... again..!!

  • @Gregorypeckory I don't know much at all about Indian musicians, although I heard some Hindu-ish rap (By Golly! It was good too!) with good instrumentals for accompaniment. QUITE original. I also know that when I played a Reggae festival, we didn't have a percussionist, so I pulled my friend (an Indian immigrant) out of the crowd to play impromptu with us. SACKS! He was GOOD. The dude cooked, man! :-)

  • @Pan3405 You are merely a troll. Please go away. Your comments are absurd.

  • @dorian411: You find it hard to cope with critizisme? ..I've seen Al di Melola, Paco de Lucia.. They are by far better than John.. And he knows..I can assure You.

  • @Pan3405 there is no such thing as better. end of.

  • @AbstractMan23 True.. but there are many fans who thinks he is God..

  • @Pan3405 i would understand if you would say that about malmsteen or satriani, but for my hearing john just varies his hooks, he is not repeating them....his tonal feeling is very complex

  • @AbstractMan23 Wow, what a deep insight-no good or bad guitarists-all equal-who are you kidding? That statement is almost as stupid as the one you were replying to by the idiot Pan3405, who "assures us" that JM knows Di Meola and De Lucia are "far better" than him. He's a moron, since the opposite is obviously true, in terms of overall musical accomplishments. So are you, since a child could tell you there are good and bad musicians-just by listening.

  • @Pan3405 "I can assure you"? That settles it, if you're 10 years old. You are truly the ultimate dumbfuck, which wouldn't be so bad if you weren't also such a miserable, insufferable, jealous little asshole. Your mommy lets you spend far too much time on her computer.

  • @Pan3405 Hey troll, where are your videos showing you can do anything approaching JM's "not that difficult" playing? Sad little know-nothing loser. Maybe the aliens will like you-clearly humans don't.

  • @Gregorypeckory I think You're pretty alien!

  • Seen them in 1976 on the beaches of Goa, India. A time in heaven.

  • What guitar he is playing?

  • It was custom made for this band, its the Shakti guitar. It has recessed frets and sympathetic strings so it sort of has a sitar quality to it

  • Well, the frets are not exactly recessed. The fingerboard is scalloped, meaning that there is a dip in the fingerboard between the frets. That makes bending strings easier for John, because he does not have to push the string down and then up to bend a note. He only has to push down. Brilliant idea. The guitar was handmade for him by a luthier at Gibson. I read an article about John and this guitar in Acoustic Guitar magazine a few years ago.

  • zakir looks like he never ages

  • Well, this is about 35 years ago so...

  • No... just his hairstyle. :-)

  • Geniale e versatile!! Grazie

  • To see video of a guitar I scalloped myself - see my video here titled - " Shakti- Scalloped fretboard demonstration ".

  • I want that shakti shirt he's wearing

  • At 3:15, John starts a run from the lower register. Look at the "bounce" he's getting on those low strings!!!

  • and you noticed that!! great work...

  • Yes, all guitar players love to get that "bounce".

But it only comes with strong fingers and great technique - which McLaughlin has in spades!

  • Pardon my ignorance... what exactly do you mean by "bounce"?

  • Well, maybe that's not the best word but I think I read McLaughlin describe it as "bouncy"

His fingers seem to "bounce" off the fretboard. The finger hits the fretboard, then releases quickly. Pressure/ release / pressure / release , etc without any wasted energy.

  • Gotcha. Thanks for that!

  • That audio concert website JAZZFUSION(dot)TV has added another Shakti concert from the the 1970s . plus they now have some very rare JOHN McLAUGHLIN ONE TRUTH BAND CONCERTS from 1978 and 1979 which feature L SHANKAR on electric violin.

  • McLaughlin is a bloody genius...

  • If all you want musical energy try this on google: "John Mclaughlin Trio stuttgart 89". this is the period of "Live at the royal festivall hall", PURE ENERGY! what a playing by John, Kai and Trilo, wonderful! JOHN IS ALWAYS ON THE NEXT LEVEL.

  • i had the chance to hang out with john mclaughlin in chicago about ten years ago before i seen him at the house of blues & backstage there was the local radio playing and he was getting warmed up by playing every single tune on the radio lol.. it was almost more amazing then the concert because this man can play any song ever just by hearing it... i know alot of people are gifted that way but he seems to be on the next level of that ;)

  • du-am-uh

  • Also, listen to the 1977 Shakti concert in Paris on JAZZ FUSION TV. Incredible.

  • unrivaled abilities.

  • If anyone wants to hear 1977 concert of Shakti , go to JAZZ FUSION TV (do google search on those words to find it , comes up first result). lick onto AUDIO BOOTLEGS , lots of recordings of fusion concerts . There is concert of Shakti - SAN DIEGO 1977. Good sound qualtiy , goes for one hour 40 minutes.

  • Beautiful... Thanks for sharing with us

  • Que musica mas hermosa, venida del espacio sideral. Enviada por los Dioses del Olimpo.

  • ohhh my god !!!! the great dads!!

  • thats L.shankar on violin...ravi shankars nephew....the otiginal shakti line up.

  • one of my favorites mclaughlin's pieces

who is playing the violin ????

its not Jean Luc Ponty right?????

  • great frends...
